REAL ID

Retired IBEW
Soon everyone will need a Real ID to fly. Some of the requirements with options are just stupid. Cancelled checks, SSA info, Current DL, Bank statement, Credit card statement...etc.. what if they get hacked? all of your important information is now on the black web

Check with your state for requirements

Take your current ID, Social Security Card, birth certificate, and a mortgage statement. It's really not that difficult. They don't actually take your banking information, it's more for just address verification.

So I called to make an appointment for a Real ID, an appointment is required. I waited on hold for 25 minutes. When I finally got an agent I was told todays appointments were full, call again tomorrow. I guess they are just taking appointments day by day.

I'll try again tomorrow and if it is full I'm going to go directly to the Secy of State

I've been real ID compliant for some time. I don't remember it being any sort of hassle. It was a bit more hassle for my wife who found that her birth certificate was just a document issued from the hospital that had sufficed all of her life as ID. She had to get her real birth certificate that she should have already had.

I'm not aware of how applying for a real ID works in other states. In Kansas it was a matter of complying while renewing my driver's license. Was just a matter of showing up with my paperwork and pulling a wait number for my turn.

You can just walk right in in TN. I was literally in and out in 15 minutes.

Appointments are required. You can't walk in and grab a number and wait your turn

I'm surprised that a passport isn't enough to get a Real ID
This is exactly my issue with it. As well as a passport, I’m also in the TSA pre-check program and have a GOES entry card and as rigorous as those combined requirements are (including an in-person visit and interview!), there’s no way I’m going to deal with California’s awful DMV system to get a “real” ID. I’m fine flying with my passport anyway; the people I feel sorry for are those who never got a passport and are now stuck with either that or the real ID snafus.

yeah i don't plan on flying anytime soon. i just need to get my birth certificate which i do not have. it got lost somewhere during my many moves over the years. so i need to get a replacement and i'm too lazy to do it now....lol

I don't know what state requires banking information to get a Real ID, but I think I'd have to move! We needed our driver's license, birth certificate and SS card. Done. Flying is an option, but if you have to go to an office in a federal courthouse, you'll be out of luck without that little gold star...

Plus another proof of address. Like a mortgage statement, insurance declarations page, etc. I even brought my vehicle registration in just in case. Cell phone bill works too.

My license came up for renewal last November, and due to my age I had to go in person to renew it (I'm not sure of the details of the algorithm, but if you'll be over 70 by the *next* renewal then you have to go in person and pass the eye test). I went ahead and got the REAL ID version, and one of the proofs I took in was my vote-by-mail ballot. My name and address were printed on the envelope, though of course those don't appear on the ballot itself. The guy was about to reject me because that info wasn't on the ballot, but a lady who was stationed at the window next to him intervened and took him aside and talked to him and he came back and approved it.
It's not a big deal to me anyway, but I thought it might simplify things at the airport, and while I don't mind traveling with my passport, I guess I'm less likely to lose it if it's safely at home in the fireproof safe while I'm traveling domestically.

My wife and I are both real ID compliant and will put those identifications to the test next week. We haven't flown in quite some time and I'm not at all looking forward to the hassle of getting from point A to B in busy unfamiliar airports. We prefer driving and would travel by that means this time if not for our pet cat. She is old and very spoiled and the wife refuses to board her. Instead we are counting on the local children to tag team her care. Obligating them comfortably decreases the window travel so we are flying. Wish us luck in quickly navigating the short layovers at our age.

Air travel surely is not as much fun as it once was, though trying to find your way around huge, unfamiliar airports has never been fun. Good luck to you both (and your kitteh) and have a wonderful trip!

My personal ID expries on my actual birthday this year, (Day before Valentime's) but I already filled out the fourm like a while ago, though, I do not think of anything before it is ever mentioned before, less cloudy in my head that way.

I don't fly but when my license last came up for renewal several years ago the Real ID program had just started and the effective date hadn't been delayed yet so I got it just in case. I got the high-level Enhanced version because why not.
Even though I don't expect to be getting on a plane any time soon there's always the possibility of it being useful to access various locations like a federal building.

We have REAL ID and newly renewed passports, as we'll be flying to Cap Cana in Dominican Republic later this month. Now it's time to start thinking about wardrobe and how to get it all in carry-ons.
