Really, really good - but not great.

Anyone else agree?

Hands down, the best android phone on the market. Crazy specs, and everything seems to work well. The video chat apps are great, and android has a fairly large sized app catalog now - Although, in my opinion there are better apps for the iphone.

So after talking to my buddy about it, he said something that really has me thinking. We were talking about how this is one of the, if not most, responsive android phones out there - but even still, there's a minor lag to it. Don't get me wrong it's a very slight delay, but it not only is it during swiping home screens but also follows into the app drawer and others.

So anyways what he said was that this new (to us) technology is great, but it's still not as smooth as the old iPhone... and he's right.

The latest and greatest android device still isn't running as smoothly as my old iPhone 3GS. Obviously it has to do with a number of things, but i just can't help be bothered by it. Another example is scrolling - Sometimes when scrolling I'll end up selecting and opening something. Doesn't make sense to me at all, maybe I have to relearn how to scroll? Again don't get me wrong I think this is a really, really, really good phone.

Anyways I don't know who of you are coming from an iPhone, but I just thought I'd share. This is my 3rd android handset (hero, moment) and I think the OS is good....but there need some kinks worked out. Hopefully everything is better on Froyo. *crossing fingers*

Isn't Froyo expected to fix that? I think we are safe in assuming that Froyo will be coming to the Evo eventually...

I have been using it nonstop and I have yet to notice lag. I actually did a device wipe as I was walking out of the store, ran the update, and it actually ran smoother than my friends iPhone. He switches next week to Sprint.

I just got the Evo today and I still have my 3GS and I was going to say you are imagining things. But then I checked both phones out and the Evo did have a slight lag and I didn't notice it before. Then I remembered that the Evo allows multitasking and some apps stay open after you go back to the home screen. So I ran that Advanced Task Killer (ATK) app and it showed that I had about 20 apps "open". I killed all of them but ATK and the lag decreased dramatically for me (maybe a very slight lag, but not really noticeable).

I also turned off Sense earlier because I think the stock Android is better because I am used to the iPhone OS. I am still getting accustomed to the Home, Back and Menu buttons. I do like the Back button. But I always confuse the Menu with Home. I think it will take a few days to get used to the phone.

You should see how many tasks you have open in the background.

But so far, I like this phone much better than my iPhone (but I think after 3 years I was looking for a change).

Edit: And it sounds like Froyo will be much faster so that will probably make things even better.
 
I mostly agree. I'm a bit aggravated that the resolution is lower than I expected so everything is a bit "Mickey Mouse-ish" large. The slight lag surprised me a little too, let's hope Froyo improves it a bit. I do like it so far though.

The problem I see with this is, yeah, it's running in the background, but how the hell do I get back to it without clicking on the icon again?

Besides using a app like ATK there isn't really a quick way to do it, not everyone has good feelings about task killer apps but give it a try.
 
Best phone i've ever owned by a large margin, Haven't felt this good about a phone purchase since my first iPhone :D All you iPhone guys are going to love Android once you learn the ins and outs of it granted it takes a bit longer to learn because theres so much more you can do vs. not much at all you can do by comparison on the iPhone.
 
Good points and rather thought out (and nicely spoken too)

After draining the battery once (i just had to play with it for hours) I turned off sense and it was lightning fast.

Even with half a millisecond of lag, it's still much, much, much faster than my hero, pre, bb and even my old iphone 3g.

Coming from the 3GS, I think the biggest thing is sense ui. To even get close to that on an iphone, it needs to be rooted and even then you're still a LONG ways off from the level of customization that can be done with android.

Faster than a 3GS? Maybe not. A much better user experience for a geek like me? Most definitely.
 
@ mobilemaniac I have yet to play with an incredible, so I can't comment on the lag, but if it is silky smooth, HTC needs to give us a fix. I know it's something really minor, but to me it's just one of those thing yenno?

@ GaryColeman I just turned off sense to test. Slight decrease in lag in home screen swiping, no lag what so ever with the app drawer scrolling. I think I have yet to play with an android device that didn't have that "looks like it's missing a frame in the animation" home screen swipe.

@ meyerweb iPhone 3G can multitask, and the 3GS can multitask quite well actually. Once you have a shit ton of apps going then it will become laggy like the android OS. What's strange though, is Androids lag seems like it's skipping frames in the animation, but almost seems at full speed, while the iphone (when a lot of mem is being used) seems a lot more choppy.


@ asaberan I agree 100%. When I read the reviews stating ti was the same resoution it reminded me of this 22" samsung LCD I have that only does 1680x1050. I do love the screen size though. Internet browsing looks great, just a little laggy on the scrolling. I have started using Advanced Task Killer and that seems to be helping. On my other android devices I gave up on task killers and let android do its thing...but on this, i've set ATK to run every 30 mins.

I mean guys, don't get me wrong. I don't hate the device or hate android. I think they're awesome. I just want it to be smooth. I want my cake and i freakin want to eat it too.

That' pretty much sums it all up right there. I feel the exact same way. At the same time, we live in a world where we go out and buy the latest and greatest technology available to us consumers, just to make things a look a little better and run a little faster...and I want my faster. lol

I will say though, Boy have I missed sprint. I can finally use the phone again! I was so used to just text messaging I forgot was talking on cell phones was like!
 
I don't notice any lag in mine but if it eases your mind Froyo makes the phone 4-5x faster no exxageration. I almost didn't get the EVO because I didn't want to give up Froyo on my Nexus One but in the end i'm really glad I did :D Can't wait for the Froyo update it's going to be awesome!
 
Try using launcherpro to get rid of the lag. It is incredibly fast. Offers 4 extra icons on a bottom dock and even has an option for 5 rows of normal icons per page instead of 4.
