Root Rebooting and Roms

MacLaddy

Newbie
Hello all,

I have a rooted EVO 4g, but I rooted it a long time ago and haven't done a thing sense, so I believe I am just running an early version of Froyo. It is still the stock HTC Sense that came with the phone. I did flash a new kernel, but I have no clue what it was now.

This phone has recently started shutting down randomly and rebooting. It will shut down for no reason in my pocket, and then reboot and have changed back to a factory look. Then it will reboot and just wipe everything completely from the home screen.

It doesn't do a constant repeating loop reboot, as I've read about, but it does do it a 10+ times a day.

I'm hoping that this is just some kind of software glitch, and I think it's time to give up the ghost and just upgrade. So my question is this:

What Rom should I choose at this point, and which Kernel should go with it? I am looking at MikG v3.11, but I don't know what version of Android that is, and what Kernal would go well with it.

I appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,
Mac

It actually looks like MikG comes with the Rom, so I apologize for not reading up on it first. I'm going to download and flash and see if that helps my other problems.

I do have one other question, and that is about all my apps and data. I have titanium backup, and it stores the backups on my SD Card. Will Titanium restore everything to a newer rom, or will it have problems? I think Titanium will mow my lawn if I ask it to, so I'm guessing it would be okay.

Thanks again,
Mac

yeah mikg is gingerbread and it is the best sense rom out now....still!!!!!i forget which version mik stopped at though.

and yes tb will work on all roms so you should have no issue with restoring data with it. keep in mind that you should never backup or restore system apps or its data(those are in red).

Ahh, thank you. I have been backing up all system apps. I'll be sure not to restore them. Are my contacts part of the system data, or is that separate now?

Thanks ocnbrze.

yes contacts are system apps. you should be saving your contacts with google so that when you flash a new rom, all you need to do is sign in to google and your contacts will get ported over to the new rom.

I don't typically use google services, except for the play store. I believe I can have Lookout back up my Contacts. I'll just go that route.

Thanks for the info. It's much appreciated.

let us know how it works out for you and if there are things that annoy you about the interface maybe there is an easy fix i ran the mik g and worked well i switched to a rom for deactivated devices because i use mine as a web browser and media player and not a phone so alot of the phone bloat is out with the rom im using but with the mik rom i was very pleased

there are some other apps you can use as well. rom tool box is one and there is also mybackup pro that can backup your contacts. i keep everything with google so it makes getting my contacts easier to my new rom.

Good to know, thanks. I'm always iffy about Lookout, so another option is good.

i use lookout and never had any issues. really apps like that are not really needed, but i like it. not sure why you are iffy with it. i never have used it do backup or restore data so i can't help you there with it.

Okay, now I'm a little concerned. I started reading up on what I could before flashing, and I came across this post.

Can we flash over the old ROM? - theMikMik

According to Steal25 we should wipe our SD Card before flashing. Is that normal procedure? I didn't think I needed to do that.

I also came across the new stock Sense OTA rom that is available, and I am wondering if I should just do that one.

Any advice on the SD Card?

Thanks,
Mac

You need not wipe your sd card...he says to wipe EXCEPT the sd card :)

I was on the htc Evo 4G for a while and I never wiped my SD card before flashing a new ROM, never had any problems with that practice.

I feel everyone should backup the contents of their SD card on a weekly basis and keep the backup on their PC/netbook. One can never have too many backups.

Thanks Mikestony, I apparently didn't/don't understand what I'm reading then. He says

WIPE EVERYTHING I wipe in this order: CACHE-DALVIC-BOOT-SYSTEM-SDCARD:.android_secure
DATA-SDCARD:EXT, Then I wipe ALL userdata/factory reset, I do all of these twice, some do it only once some as much as 3Xs WIPE EVERYTHING EXCEPT
1
SDCARD
I see now that he says "Except SDCARD," but what is the CACHE-DALVIC-BOOT-SYSTEM-SDCARD:.android_secure DATA-SDCARD:EXT?

I used Clockwork to wipe the Dalvik cache, and the regular cache. Instead of making it complicated, do you think I'm good to go with that?

Thanks again everyone. EVO's an older phone now. Lucky me there are still a bunch of people willing to help.

He states that he wipes twice, and some do it 3x. As a developer, I feel there's no need to wipe more than once. If the wipe function can be trusted to do its job, then once is enough. If the wipe function cannot be trusted to do its job, how do we know 2x or 3x did the job completely? If the wipe function isn't trustworthy, then 100x could be insufficient.

I flashed ROMs on my Evo 4G on a weekly basis, never had any problem wiping only once.

Thanks for the advice. Any idea where I can find these apps? They aren't available in Google Play.

Unfortunately changing recovery isn't as simple as just adding a app. These instructions should get you through it. If you have questions please ask.

I placed a link for Smelkus on the bottom.

here are the instructions:
1.download the file.
2.rename so that it is only named PC36IMG. make sure not to add ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
6.select no to reboot because we want to go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
7.select recovery.
8.select backup and restore and select backup
9. select the first three and wimax. the other partitions do not need to be backed up. always keep one nandroid backup with wimax keys backed up on your computer.
10.now you can reboot.
11.using a file manager of some sort or even through your computer via usb, you should rename or delete the PC36IMG file on your card. otherwise you will be asked to update every time you go to the hboot screen. you do not need that file any more.

Great!! Thank you. I followed all the steps, and I see the recovery in a nandroid folder. I have no idea how to restore from the stuff in that folder, but let's hope I don't have to.

Thanks,
Mac

the recovery file does not belong in any folder. it needs to be on the sd card when you are switching recoveries. now if you mean nandroid backup then yes it does get saved in the nandroid folder. just keep in mind if you switch recoveries the cwm backup does not work with amon ra or smelkus.

It's funny how you fret over things forever, and then when you finally go through with it it couldn't be simpler.

I've flashed to MikG, and I love it. I had no idea it could make such a change from the stock Froyo.

It has still rebooted twice randomly, so I think that's an ongoing issue. I'm guessing it's a hardware problem, but maybe not. If anyone has any thoughts on this I'd appreciate it.

I've also lost my HTC Sense Clock Widget. The one with the weather, alarm clocks, etc. It wasn't part of the original ROM, and I can't get Titanium to restore it. Has anybody else had this issue?

Thanks again everyone.

Correct, I was just talking about the nandroid backup. After using smelkus I don't believe I have any more use for Clockwork. I much prefer that method.
