Help Rebooting

My wife's statosphere has taken to suddenly rebooting when she's on a call or the phone will be sitting there on the table and suddenly we'll hear the Galaxy S music.

Her phone is rooted and has an adblocking hosts file but nothing more. Not even recovery.

I'm debating whether this is common or if she needs to try to exchange it.

Actually I have had this happen quite a lot - and I am always in a phone call when it happens, while using Bluetooth hands free. I've had it do it stock, and also debloated.

Just out of curiosity, how do you plan on doing the exchange considering it is rooted?

If I were in that situation I guess I would do it all over the phone with cust. serv. and just hope that when they got my phone in the mail they did not realize what changes I had made to the OS. Is that sort of what you had in mind or something else?

Like I said, I'm curious because as we all generally have rooted phones the scuttlebut is that they are obviously un-returnable because we have voided the warranty. Right?

Take that back, it just happened to me again... and this time the phone was up to my head. I have no idea whats causing it.

I too hope I am not jinxing myself, but I have not had this happen to me either. Both me and my wife have a Strat. Mine is rooted and running an "ad-blocking" app hers is not. But I have actually had no problems whatsoever as of yet, and neither has she. You know, except for standard "operator error" type stuff.

I've started having this problem. I'm not using bluetooth or anything, the phone just restarts while talking on a voice call, it's ridiculous.

stock, non-rooted (because of this issue, i.e. don't know if I will have to return it)

Very rarely have I had a full, hardware-level reboot, with the reboot sound and screen

But I keep having soft-reboots ...
* system lock, sometimes going black
* wakes up with no signal, scanning-media, no icons
* wrong background (blue starburst, not live-grass+weather)
* over 20-ish seconds, gets through scanning media, wakes up antennas, icons
* loss of voice-settings (forgets the default txt2speech, forgets car-mode)
* loss of calendar alerts unless I go into my calendar program
* stock browser icon in the app-bar instead of Dolphin icon ... if I go into "Applications" then dolphin is auto-restored instantly

Because of this and the weird 4G / 3G data loss oddities, I don't know if I have a buggy unit (so might have to return it) ... preventing me from rooting and de-bloating ... which is frustrating, because I'd swear that the 380 RAM is packed with always-running-programs = running into space-limiting issues and causing browser crashes and game crashes ... but that's for another posting

A tech rep who seemed pretty savvy told me that there are a number of known bugs and a fix was coming "soon". He also claimed a version of ice cream is really coming for this phone.

I've never really bought into "your warranty is voided" crap by rooting.
Yes her phone is obviously rooted when you see:
SAMSUNG
/!\

After turning it on, but supposedly reflashing the stock kernel will leave you rooted and make that go away.

Or you can reflash back to stock with ODIN / Samsung PST / Heimdal.

So unrooting is fairly easy. Not nearly as easy as on an HTC phone but fairly easy.

I can attest to that. When I rooted my phone I was seeing that Exclamation point warning. But after flashing the new kernel to make the move to EK1 that warning symbol was then gone! So as far as I'm concerned if I needed to return the phone on a warranty replacement or something I should be fine, unless they check the internal counter. From what I understand from those who know infinitely more than I (Scur to name but one guy) there is an internal binary counter that at this point cannot be altered. But I highly doubt that is checked by a standard tech after the fact. Ya know?

This is what pisses me off about hardware and software makers these days. They rush things to release knowing full well there's bugs to be ironed out and all this shit going on. Then they fix it SIX MONTHS later with a software patch that also adds a lot of bloat nobody wants. OTA updates have spoiled phone makers just like title patches have spoiled game console developers. Just because you have the ability to retroactively fix a bug doesn't mean you shouldn't fix it now.

Again.. to the point of the "Warning" Exclamation point that appears post-root: I just flashed my Kernel from EK1 back to EI2 in preparation of flashing a new ROM and after flashing the Kernel back to EI2 the Exclamation point that had been missing up until now is back. So I can confirm that flashing the EK1 kernel or something that it includes will remove the warning marker.

I figure it's probably worth mentioning that I haven't had this proglem since I flashed the TweakStock rom on my phone. Maybe I just haven't been talking on a call long enough for it to happen but I'm pleased.
