Received update

They're blowing smoke up your *ss, HTC has nothing to do with how the carrier pushes out the ota, they just wrote the damn thing. Virgin is actually trying to infer that htc has access to their servers and towers?

They told my the same thing, call HTC. Two weeks later, three phone swapps with Radio Shack, 12+ hours documented on the phone with HTC / Virgin and I still do not have the update. From what I am told Virgin decided they did not want to pay to keep hosting this update file or the bandwidth it took to continue pushing it out to the users so they discounted the phone and stopped pushing the update.

Third NEW STOCK, untouched Virgin HTC EVO V 4G from a retailer that will not update and HTC and/or Virgin refuse to do a thing about it other then tell me to root and do it myself.

They lied about Gorilla Glass too, HTC told Mr it was made by the company that makes it so they were legally able to market it that way, but its NOT the "normal" gorilla glass, its a cheep alternative (per HTC level 2).

Oh and per HTC if you root and a hardware button falls off its your fault for unauthorized software. This phone is a POS, I am not losing my warranty.

See this username on XDA, lol I think I know how to root/rom an android device. I left Verizon after 12+ years on contract to come to this garbage, if HTC thinks I am going to fix their garbage phones myself they should get their head checked.

Returning this crap and will take VM to small claims court if they don't honor the refund. Two weeks ago they said they would, now of course they are pretending they did not say that and no notes on the account. Liars. So sick of the bs.

Rooting will not void your warranty no matter what HTC say for the simple fact that your warranty is through Virgin and can personally attest to returning a total of 9 rooted phones of various models without a single problem. And the phone has "regular" Gorilla Glass per numerous reviews and Corning's website. Also considering that every single plan that Virgin offers includes unlimited data the concept of them not wanting to host and push a relatively small file because of bandwidth concerns just sounds ludicrous.

Ludicrous yes, but unfortunately it has the ring of truth. At the very least, I can only believe there is some reason why Virgin and/or HTC have abandoned this update. If this is the way Virgin treats their customers, I think I'll go elsewhere very soon. And HTC has become a dog of a phone manufacturer.

And therein lies the beauty of prepaid, you can walk away from the carrier at any time without paying for an etf.

I can't imagine a contract carrier would do this to their customers. Virgin has no real investment in their customer satisfaction since there's no contract for them to breach so flagrantly.

They could at least tell us a place to download this update if its too expensive to push the update...

You wouldn't be able to install it unless you're rooted and s-offed, that's why the ota will only work on a phone with a stock recovery.

So, whoever is responsible for pushing this update abandoned it?
Is this a rumor or confirmed?

I bought this phone on cyber Monday, and I've been waiting for this update before I root the device.

It's merely a rumor, just about a week ago my buddy received the update on his replacement phone.

It's almost never a good idea to wait until after you take an update to root.

Otas. Usually break any previous soff Methods

My phone was rooted and S-ON (in other words stuck in no-update limbo land).

I was getting the notification the update was ready, but it would not stick.

Finally decided to just RUU (factory reset) so I could get the update and then go back to root again after. No such luck. Even though with my root it was showing that the update was ready when I got back to stock it only had the small UI update ready, not the radio/SMS update.

No matter what I tried it would not recognize an official update.

Finally just rooted and went S-OFF and installed manually.

Pain in the ass, but unless you text a mass amount and get the errors then I would not worry about the update... it certainly does not do anything magical.

Sorry, I'm not buying any of that.

Storing/delivering the update...
The update isn't big compared to what you have on a computer and they OWN the servers, so space and cost isn't an issue. And as for bandwidth, Sprint owns half the internet backbone, as well as their own towers, it isn't an issue.

Gorrilla Glass, what you said doesn't even make sense. They cannot market it as Gorilla glass unless it IS Gorilla Glass. They would have been in court for that by now. There is however more than one type. That is like a Ford dealership trying to tell you that the Focus can be sold as a GT40 because Ford makes both.

Lastly the button..
Ever heard of the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act, it's a FEDERAL law that specifically prohibits exactly what you just said. They cannot void your warranty claiming software broke a hardware button. They can try, and even tell you this unofficially, but if so, you need to speak to their boss because that person is going to get them sued.

You may be disgruntled and rightly so, but you shouldn't believe everything you read, see or hear, even from level 2 trained monkeys. Level 2, is just a notch or two above untrained monkeys. And they still have no clue what the company is actually doing. Even level 1 and engineers are often left in the dark about what is happening. I have bought phones they didn't even realize the company was selling yet.

I'm in the market for a new phone/carrier, I still have the original iPhone, and this is one of the phones I'm looking at. I'm assuming that if I get this phone that it won't have the update that everyone is waiting for and I might have to wait an additional 45 days to get the update. Is the problem with all the phones or is it just a crap shoot, some phones have the issue while others don't? My phone usage is light to moderate talking, texting & email (mostly work related) so I can see how it can get frustrating when your phone isn't working. Virgin Mobile has this phone right now for $149 which I think is a steal. I'm just looking at the pros and cons of this phone and the only con that's holding me back is the texting/phone issue.

Sorry, I'm not buying any of that.

Of course the bandwidth is minimal. But I wouldn't be surprised if google charges a fee to distribute the update through their servers. In which case there could very well be no desire on Virgin's part to foot the bill for HTC's mistake. There's something going on between these companies that stopped the OTA rollout in its tracks.

So who is to blame? Google, HTC, or Virgin? Or where is a good place to start?

This is almost a question without a distinction, you can take your pick of any of them to blame, or all of them, the end result is the same unfortunately. My personal opinion would be Virgin because they have very limited experience with pushing ota's, the only other one that I've received was the FroYo upgrade on the Intercept and that was a major fiasco also.

Where can I look in phone status to tell what firmware I've got installed? I wanted to find out whether my 3vo has received the update or not--what version number does the phone switch to upon receiving the update everyone is referring to?

On some phones it seems like the software update doesn't show even though it has been flashed , instead just check your baseband(radio) version. The updated baseband version is 1.09.00.0706, if you show this that means that you do have the update.

I think it's the 29th.
The update started role out on Nov. 14th, and their target is 45 days.
So, the 29th is about right.
I could be wrong, this is just based on my memory and the reading from this forum.

Google has nothing to do with your phone's OS updates once the initial source code leaves Google's servers.

The escalations tech at HTC informed me that google distributes the update to each phone. This is why they have us do the checkin procedure to make sure we are properly in contact with the google servers .

Yes, it would be today, the 29th. Unsurprisingly, I have still not received the update.
