Help Reception Issues? Concerned about radio signal strength?

well call back and speak to level II support. don't use your mobile phone if possible.

could be a temp issue in your area or could be a tangled profile update.

curious, what made you want to update your profile?

Been having trouble with connection, so I thought I'd try to update it. Was on the phone with someone else from Sprint and couldn't get it to connect. No problems connecting with my other devices. Taking it to best buy today.

As it turns out, after 4 hours on the phone with tech support, trips to 2 Best Buys to try to get a replacement right away and hopefully a new one, I learned that there was a total outage with one of the towers near me. How support didn't know this is beyond me, the BB guy told me someone was in with a similar situation and he couldn't activate any Sprint phones. So I decided to go to a Sprint repair store in a different area. They went through all the motions as well, but no go...I was about to pitch my fit and request a phone out of the box (the employee said this may work if I got pissy enough, when the manager came over, did a simulated battery pull, and there pops up the network! Evidently, all the rebooting after the ## and factory reset stuff is not the same as a battery pull...who knew?

to me it sounded like a local outage. it reminded me when sprint was going through the upgrades last year and people were complaining about missed calls, text, etc.

glad you finally got things sorted out....

Hi. I just got the HTC EVO LTE seven days ago. Prior to this phone, I had the HTC Hero (for 4 years!). I have been using Sprint for about 7 years.

My concern: My new EVO has a terrible time getting "bars." I often only have one or two bars. Yesterday alone it dropped four calls! Today it said it was roaming.

This all happened while I was in my own house. My Hero never dropped below 3 bars when I was home and NEVER went into roaming. I have the same carrier (Sprint) and the same plan.

What can I do to get my new EVO to have better connectivity?

Heya!
:)

Then first thing I would try is doing a prl and profile update. Its then first thing sprint is going to do when you call into them anyway, so its worth a shot.

You'll find the option in settings>updates I believe. It'll be down toward the bottom of the main settings menu, you'll have to scroll.

From there do the prl update, and then the profile update and see if that doesn't improve.

Thanks, but this was the first thing I tried, about 3 days ago. No change.

Applications, Sprint Zone, contact a representative by phone.

Have them schedule a test for you - ok to say that you heard that it's called an RF box test.

You go in at the appointed time, hand them your phone, they test it properly. If you bought from Sprint, they swap it, if not, they can give you a printout to take to the place where you did buy it so you have proof if it's defective, no arguing or runarounds and it's all under the watchful eye of Sprint corporate.

Great service option, I used it successfully on my phone before this, and LTEvo owners here have as well.

I was afraid someone would tell me to go into a Sprint store. After my last visit (about 3 years ago) I have not set foot in a Sprint store. My experiences with Sprint employees has been horrible beyond belief. At one point a "manager" was yelling at me that I didn't understand how my phone worked. That is why I waited 4 years to upgrade from my Hero, and it is why I chose to get the EVO at Best Buy.

I can almost guarantee that if I go into a Sprint store they will tell me there is nothing wrong with my phone and just hand it back to me.

Is there ANY OTHER WAY I can fix this?

Well, the test earlymon described is really the only definitive way to tell if its a problem with your device.

If that test says your phone is fine, you know its working as intended. If the phone is defective, you know you'll need to go to best buy to swap it out.

And they don't get to argue with an RF box test or why. Sprint corporate makes the appointment and they will follow up with you. The locals don't have to like it but they do have to shut up and do it. :)

Plus you'll go to a Sprint corporate store and not an independent.

Most of the horror stories I've heard have not been from corporate stores.

Or, you can take it to Best Buy and insist that it doesn't work, see what they say.

If you have internet service in your home, you may wish to call Customer Service. Tell them about the signal problem in your home. They may offer to send you an Airave device that functions through your internet modem.

is the reception really that bad on this phone, my son is telling me that he is not receiving calls, yet it rings and then goes to voice mail and does not just go directly to voice mail, which would suggest the phone is receiving the call? IDK what to think.

There are phones with better reception but in general this one is very good.

You can have it tested at a Sprint corporate center - call Sprint, not the store, have them arrange the appointment. Explain the issue and ask for an RF box test.

If he has a lemon, they'll replace it or provide proof that a replacement is needed for another vendor.

He could have a lemon, it happens.

Yup, get the test. I had a lemon, once the phone was replaced it was night and day with regard to reception.
I'm getting a signal in areas I didn't when I had the OG Evo.

Also make sure the back cover is properly seated. The antennas are in the back cover plate, so if it's not seated right the contacts won't touch.

My Wife and I both have Sprint and we finished up a multi state roadtrip this weekend and while I went through two and a half states without a data signal, she was cruising pinterest the whole time without an issue. I didn't think my phone was that bad, maybe the iPhone 4s has a way better radio?

Or you have a defective radio, or your firmware is out of date?

What baseband or software version are you running?

Have you updated your PRL and Profile (in that order)?

I check for software/firmware updates about 3x/week and I updated my pro/profile the 2 times I had WiFi.
This is my third ltevo and it didn't seem any worse than the others until this trip. It kind of worried me that I couldn't use the GPS unless I found a WiFi source to kick me off.
I received my first 4g signal ever in MN on this trip. It was actually faster than the WiFi at my in-laws, but it wouldn't work at all on the first level of the home. It was either very fast or non-existent.

Has anyone else noticed that the reception for 4G is just terrible overall? I know someone with a Galaxy S3 and they have no problem getting 4G at my house, or almost anywhere for that matter, while I have to put my phone up against the window while doing PRL updates and praying that after 4 or more updates that the 4G symbol will appear. It is so sensitive that just touching it to text someone will knock it back to 3G sometimes. I notice this a lot because I have compared it to the S3 in many areas and have had similar issues in some of them. Not to mention the speeds are slower. Is it my phone or is this an issue with the phone in general?

It sounds more like an issue of your carrier changing things at the towers. Tht's usually a situation that doesn't last all that long.

well when i upgraded to the note 3, i noticed that my note 3 is getting better 4g strength then on my evo lte.......so it might be your phone. however it is possible that it could be your towers as well.

have you tried and update your prl and profile?
