Just recently got Samsung Galaxy S Captivated, anyone have any recommendation on what i should do with it? I'm a phone n00b

I read that if you root your phone, the warranty can be voided. Is this true? (if it helps, I'm from canada, with rogers)
My phone is currently running on android 2.1, so should I update it?

Any recommendation on what I should do is good.

Welcome. :) Step 1: read the Captivate FAQ:

Yes. Rooting, flashing ROMs, and any other unendorsed modification of the system files voids your warranty.

There is an official update for the Canadian Captivate on Rogers that will bring you to 2.2 but people are having a hard time getting it installed. You need to use Kies.

The USA (AT&T) Captivate is the last Galaxy S phone on the planet to not have received an official update to 2.2.

welcome!
You should definitely get used to the phone and read the forums before you do anything to it.
Thank you for the welcome

Thank you for the welcome. I have skim though the Captivate FAQ.
I also installed Kies into my computer, however when i tried to update, it says: The device will be supported soon. (I could be updating it wrong)

I recommend just enjoying your phone the way it is (rooting/rom-wise) for a few days / weeks before you consider doing anything to it.

In the mean time, as far as applications go, I'd recommend 3G Watchdog, AirSync, Angry Birds, Astrid Tasks, Beautiful Widgets, CNN News, DoubleTwist, Facebook, Fandango, Flikie Wallpapers HD, Mega Jump, Multicon, Pure Messenger Info, RingTone, ShopSavvy, SliceIt, and Zedge as useful or fun apps.

As far as customizing the look of your phone, I'd recommend looking at threads on this website that people post on, linking screen shots of their homescreens, and modelling after / stealing things here and there from the ones you like most.

For accessories I would recommend getting the Body Glove case sold at most At&t stores and ordering a GSP Anti-fingerprint screen protector. The screen protector is amazing and easy to install.

Do some googling about the infamous SMS bug that effects most android phones. Basically in some rare instances it sends your text messages out to the wrong people. Its really bad.

On a related not, check out chomp sms, its a nice replacement for the stock messaging program.

Check out the swype keyboard that comes with your phone. Once you start using it you won't be going back.

I'll 2nd the recommendation on the body glove case it fits the phone perfectly. The AT&T store sells screen protectors that are 3 for $10 that work great.

Yeah, i have heard of that SMS bug, however i have never experienced it for myself. for my 3rd party SMS app i use Handcent SMS, that's one of the many beauties of android... if you don't like something... there are multiple ways to go about changing it... and yes i also use the body glove case and highly recommend it. :D
