Root Recovery/boot problem

I have had my MT for over 10 months now. I have flashed and tried almost all the Roms out there. The past month, I had reverted to the nandroid backup of the stock VM rom, rooted with gingerbreak. I wanted to try out the latest update to the Minimal Triumph rom. As per my normal practise, I booted into CWM and made a nandroid of my stock Rom.

While doing the backup, I got a message saying that there was an error while backing up data. I rebooted the phone at this point and after the splash screen,I got a blank backlit screen with two vertical lines. I let it sit a while and it then booted normally into the stock rom. I then rebooted back into cwm. I again got the blank screen, but was able to get cwm after a while . I did factory reset and flashed the Minimal Triumph rom.
Again,I got a blank screen after the initial boot, but booted up into the rom. I set up the rom . I was getting a blank blue screen when trying to watch HD videos in YouTube. I thought a reboot might help, so I rebooted the phone. Now, the phone takes at least 10 minutes to get to the lock screen. And is unresponsive for another 10 minutes. When it finally responds, as soon as I slide the screen unlock icon, it reboots and the cycle repeats. I now managed to get into CWM, but the capacitive buttons to select the options don't work. The power and volume buttons work fine.

Would appreciate any help on this.

This is honestly beyond my ability to answer. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can help you, like one of the moderators, guides, or senior members. But if I had to take a guess at it, I would guess hardware failure.

If you are stuck with no capacitive buttons you can get the cwm recovery for the X6 variants here , you can use the power button to select, you just wont have a back option. If you get it into recovery I would suggest a full wipe including dalvik, and start with the flashable zip here [GUIDE] 100% Stock Motorola Triumph *Newb Proof* just to be safe. You can try to do another back up once you're in recovery but with the issues you're having it might just create more issues in the future. Also you may want to back up the SD card and format it just to be sure it wasn't an SD issue. Hope this helps.

Between the multiple reboots and battery pulls, the phone seems to have resolved itself. After the initial boot M logo, I am not getting the VM logo, but a blank backlit screen. Other than that, everything seems normal. I am able to get into cwm and operate normally.

Thanks for the links. I have downloaded the files and copied the directions into my laptop for the next time it happens.

Whenever I do a wipe data/ factory reset, one of the messages I am now getting is

E :format_volume : make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk1p2.

Is this something to be concerned about?

I suspect your initial problem and this latest one is related to a corrupted SD card. Try formatting your SD card.

For some reason, I can never restore froyo based ROMs. They always get stuck on the boot image.

I seem to be having a similar problem with CWM 5504 and the Sharp rom. I installed both together, so I do not know which is the cause and which is the effect. Never had a nandroid restore problem with CWM 5027 and any other rom.

I use CWM 5027 and only had one issue restoring the Sharp rom with the md5 on one backup, out of about 6. I have used TWRP 2.1.3 to flash the different versions of the Sharp rom, I even made backup, but I didn't ever do a restore.

Well, I've been using CWM 5.5.0.4 ever since I posted it and I've made backups and restored cm9 and froyo a few times and my restores all worked ok. So, if you're having trouble, it's probably related to something in the Sharp rom--whether it's some sort of incompatibility between cwm and the Sharp rom or just something going bad with your backups.
