Root Recovery issue

Today I made a goldcard to enable me to apply the 2.29.405.2 update. Since I've done that, when I try going into recovery mode the screen goes black, has a little image of the Desire with a red triangle and exclamation mark in it. Eventually the after a while is states: E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Above this at the top of the screen "Android system recovery <3e>" comes up in blue but only has:"Reboot system now" "Apply sdcard: update.zip" "Wipe data/factory reset" and "Wipe cache partition"
Can anyone advise what's happened to my phone?

Yes that's what you get when you go into stock recovery. What did you expect?

What did you have before the update? Please don't tell me you were rooted

I was debranded via unrevoked and am using a stock Rom I believe.....the debrand was done by the tech guys in an Orange shop.

Unrevoked doesn't debrand. It roots and replaces recovery with a custom one.

Completely different thing

Ok. So what can I do about the issues I mention above Dan?
Edit. I should mention that these issues only became apparent today after I created the gold card.

Don't see the problem. You have a stock phone with stock recovery. What's the issue?

Like I asked earlier. What did you expect? What are you actually trying to do?

Please be as specific as possible

Right. The problem is that now I have the issue of the red triangle and the whole"E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command" thing. I never had this before today. Until today it would go straight into a white screen with all recovery details. I could select a specific folder on my sc card to update or recover from (such as the folder i had called "ROMS" that had a copy of the stock rom i was using. All this has now changed to what I mentioned above.
What I was actually wanting to do today was install the HTC update. To do this i was advised to use a goldcard in my desire...so a created a goldcard. I just want to update my phone when an update is available.

Well firstly for a stock, unrooted device, what you have now Is standard.

Sounds like you were rooted possibly before.

Applying an update to a rooted phone undoes root and replaces custom recoveries with standard ones.

I think you first need to be clear with yourself about what you want to do.

What problem Is having standard recovery actually causing you?

Are you.literally just trying to use the ota update? You do this regularly? If you have done this before, it will have removed your root or custom Rom

What do you actually think the update is going to give you?

Before, if I managed to do something wrong which caused issues with the phone I could go into recovery and pick the specific rom within its folder to recover to.

At the red triangle, press vol up and power.

When you recovered can you remember the menu structure you went through? Was it black screen and green writing?

Where did you get the roms?

Sorry, i can't remember exactly what the colours of or the structure of the menu I had before.
The rom is have is called: 2.10.405.2-inc-radio-v2-signed

I'm not sure, the guy in the Orange shop did it all. I believe it was from the xda developers website.

Ok well its probable that you were rooted before and now you're either not or your recovery is broken. Go back and ask him what he did.

As I said, you may have been rooted but don't want to point you that way without knowing for sure.

Although why an Orange staff member would Di anything like thus to your phone is beyond me

You run ruus from pc as they are .exe files. They wipe your phone completely. This can indeed be used to upgrade.

You used the word unrevoked earlier. Did orange guy say this to you?

Ok well that roots and gives custom recovery. If you applied an update like this before, it removes that recovery and replaces with standard which you now have.

If you want root and custom recovery, you can't use official roms. You need to stick to custom ones.

Or you can stay debranded and accept updates ota when they come.

These updates don't add anything you notice so they're not very useful.

Edit> if you have a app called super user, you definitely were rooted. Although not having it doesn't man you weren't

That is the latest but its an ruu not a zip.

Ruus are .exe you have to run on .pc and wipe and update phone. All data lost.

You need to wait until someone can point you to the update.zip the you apply update.zip from recovery.

But the update will give you nothing you will notice. Not sure why everyone Is obsessed with the latest update all the time

It's not this specific update but all updates in general. All i wanted to was be able to get updates direct from HTC and not have all the branding on my phone.

All you need to do is wait until you get the message on you phone saying an update is available then. Then just download and install.

However this particular update is failing on debranded handsets anyway

the .5 one? I have the .2 one (2.29.405.2)

I couldn't install the .2 one OTA. I had to use the .zip method. This is why i went trough the goldcard stuff.

That's right you need a gold card to apply ota updates.

But 2.29.405.5 doesn't work.ota anyway. But you don't need it

I didn't install it OTA even with the goldcard, it was a zip file from recovery.
But you're saying that normally, I'll be able to just install them as normal by downloading them onto the phone OTA now I have a goldcard?
