Root Recoverys

OK, guys I am running MikG 3.11 OC 1.2Ghz with Pneumas ICS theme 6.0 all on my EVO OG. The recovery I'm running is "RA style 3.11gnm" which if you are not familiar with, is basically Amon RA with the capacitive buttons controling the cursor and movement. So, my questions TWRP just came out with a NO-BRICK version 2.2.1 for the EVO. Has anybody tried it? If so, how well does it work? Is it compatiable with the nand back ups from the recovery I'm running? Finally, how did you install it, TWRP's website is a vage on directions? THANKX JAMES

well for me i'm a little gun shy because i tried an earlier version of twrp for the og evo. you can read the reason why here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/504184-omg-me-evo-alive.html

now that is not to say that the latest version sucks. it probably works great. i would read the entire thread though and see how the development has been on it, just to be sure.

give it a go if you like and let us know.

and i second smelkus as well.

ok as far as how to install it:

stuff to have prior to installation:
you will need adb files and the fastboot.exe in a folder(called android or whatever you want).....you are going to open the command window from this folder(windows 7/8, hold shift and right click on the folder, and select "open command window here")

here are the files, if you do not have them:

1. go to their website and download the latest twrp, openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-supersonic.img
2. move the file to the android folder
3. on your phone boot into the bootloader and select fastboot from the menu
4. open the command window on your pc from the android folder
5. copy and paste this command in the command window you just opened up:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-supersonic.img

congrats you now have twrp as your recovery!!!!!

now the other way is to get the goo manager app from the play store and have the app do it for you. but this way you get how to install .img files onto the phone.

I felt the same way because not only did TWRP act up on my EVO, it acted up on my old Nook Color. I freaked out and went back and flashed the previous recoveries I had on each device.

Well, I have been watching TRWP for awhile. I knew it had troubles when it first came out. So, I was wondering if anybody had tried the latest version. I love the graphics and ease of operation. It appears the samsung S3 guys are having good luck with it. But, until someone with an EVO can tell me it works, and is stable I will stick with Amon RA stlye 3.11gnm. It has run perfect, and I don't have to use the volume or power keys to operate it.

i actually use it on my evo 4g lte and i have no issues with it. i was sort of gun shy at first, but it is the only recovery for the phone so i was forced to some degree. it works great though on this phone. the guys who worked on twrp seem to have everything under control, give it a try and let us know......who knows i do get bored from time to time and if you say it is all good i might give it a go as well.

I love TWRP on my S3! I prefer it over CWM.

Funny when I first got my S3, and rooted it, I had the option to install either recovery.

Well, coming from the Evo here, and having it ingrained in my head not to use either on the Evo, it was hard to do so:p

But now you have piqued my interest to try it on my deactivated Evo... **scratches chin**

For me (all of us) part of the Android experience is the openness of the platform. Let us know how it works and I may give it a try. :)

yep i have....it is pretty awesome. i love the sd devil one as well....LOL

Cool, right now I am running "Amon Ra style 3.11gnm" this recovery has served me well. But I do like the look D67's recoverys I have tried a couple, She Devil, and Tronits they work great!! They have more features and they run my nand backups from 3.11gnm. But ya no how you get comfortable with something? If you had to choose between the two, what would be your choice?

i always like to try something different. i believe i still have she devil on my og evo. i do not flash much things on it any more.....but since you mentioned twrp in your thread....i might give it a go tomorrow.

First thanks for all input guys!!! I ended up going with Smelkus 4.3 ICS mod. Here is the XDA link for the recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30660925&postcount=1 However there's ROMs, Kernels, and recoverys. This is not the main XDA list, this is Robobob 1221's post and its full of all kinds of EVO goodies.

UPDATE: On my last post I said that I settled on Smelkus 4.3 ICS. I ran into a snag, I have APP called volume+ boost by Meltus. I found it does work properly ( i.e. no bass ) with Smelkus 4.3 ( all versions ) or DIABLO67's themed RA style ( all four versions ). I tried updating the app, flashing recoverys first, then the app, then the other way around. No GO!!! So I am back to RA style 3.11gnm, and everything is working again.

I am puzzled. Why would a recovery have an effect on the way an app performs?
Is this the app?

yeah that is weird that it happens with recovery as it should not have any effect as mikey is suggesting.

could it be a rom thing? it does mention that in the app description.

Ok, here's the brain teaser. First I agree recoverys should not effect APPs. So, first I flashed MikG 3.11 with RA style 3.11gnm. made a nand backup then restored the backup Life is good volume+ app working fine. Tossed Smelkus 4.3 on the SD card and install through the bootloader. Boot back up, life is good volume+ app is still working fine. Then do a nand back up for MikG 3.11 and Smelkus 4.3 recovery, then restore the nand backup I just made and wammo!!!! Volume+ app has no bass again.

hmmmmm weird

Your right on that one!!! I ended up ditching MikG 3.11 I tried several other volume increasing apps. They all failed, once you made a backup with MikG 3.11. Tried different combos of apps, and recoverys with MikG 3.11 the result was always the same, app would lose its ability to increase the bass or volume, once the backup was loaded in the phone. Solution: I went to Elousions 3 with blue theme. It runs on the latest OTA 5.07.651.6 its fast and smooth with an Anthrax kernel.

HERE ARE SOME SCREEN SHOTS !!!

OH, I almost forgot. All of the volume increasing apps still work after the backup is loaded in the phone. Must some thing to do with the updated Elousions 3 rom. JAMES

weird how your mom and dad are robots while chris is human. glad to see somebody else with robot parents:D
