Root redid my phone, now USB won't connect to PC

i upgraded my Samsung Galaxy Prevail to CTMod 3.80 tonight, reinstalled a bunch of apps, and redid my partition of my sdcard. Everything was going good until i had to use my usb with my cell to transfer some files. i tried two different usb cables. a old usb cable for cells that i used to use and also a usb that came with my ac adapter that is from Samsung. both didn't work right for me. when i plug them in it says in windows explorer removable disk J and when i double click it gives me a error

"Location is not available - J:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

i tried putting in one of my usb sticks and it worked in that same usb port. im not sure if this is related to the new ctmod or not. but another thing i noticed is that i can't figure out how to download stuff in the new broswer for that mod - Lightning browser. i tried clicking a link to a download and it didnt do anything. i looked around in the settings and couldn't find a download folder. i think i'll just stick with dolphin browser for now i guess.

can someone please help me with my usb problem? i searched on google and read many posts but i couldn't find someone who had a definitive answer on it.

thanks in advance.

p.s. i'm using Windows 8 Pro 64-bit and i tried samsung kies but that didn't work in detecting the phone via usb either.

The first thing Id try is to re-install the drivers. If still nothing, can you take the card out of the phone and put it in a card reader on the PC? If no or still nothing, maybe reformat the card in phone to wipe it clean, then try to partition it again. If still nothing, report back with what all happened.

hey voltronmaximus

thanks for the tips. i will try them out. i will report back here as soon as i can.

Hi voltron Maximus

Tried reinstalling the drivers. That didn't work. Unfortunately I don't have a card reader that is small enough to fit my card. I tried to reformat the card in clockworkmod menu but it just said error mounting /sd card skipping format. Do I need to reformat it in a different menu or should I start from scratch and flash the mod again and repartition my card?

In CWM go to mount and try to mount the SD card it may be unmounted for some reason

Hi cwhatever

It may not be a bad card if it still is read by my cell right? Like storage and I can still do apps to the sdcard. That means it still works correct?

The apps are stored on a separate partition. What format is the main part of the card?

The main partition could also be corrupt

im not sure if this is right but let me know if its wrong. you want me to go to the SDparter menu to find that out, correct? here is what i have for that:

FAT partition - 2053MB
partition - 2053MB - EXT4
partition - 27287MB - FAT32

im not sure if this screwed up my phone but when i was following directions a friendly member gave me i wasn't sure if i had to reformat my sdcard during the process of installing the new rom.

also i tried the usb cable ive been using that came with my samsung charger on my laptop just now and it said a different message. it said you need to format in order to use it. that was operating system Windows 7 Ultimate. on my desktop is windows 8 pro. could win8 be conflicting with the phone in detecting it via usb?

Check that thread out. Could be your problem.

Try this -
1. Disconnect usb wire
2. Turn off usb debugging
3. Reconnect usb wire
4. Turn on usb mode in notifications

Or -
1. Reboot in CWM
2. Mount usb storage

Let me know if it works :)

If I'm reading that correctly, your main partition is a 2gb fat partition, your sdext1 (for apps) is 2gb, and you have a third partition ('sdext2') is almost 26gb??? Is that the way you intended it to be?

The problem may be that you have 2 fat partitions (though I can't say for sure it would cause a conflict)

So if the thread linked above doesn't sort out your problem, then you may want to repartition your card again... however if I'm reading that all wrong... forget everything I just said :D

hey lordvincent

i was actually not sure if i did the partitioning right. i got help from a friendly member, vce2005, months ago and he was cool enough to answer my questions about my phone. lordvincent, can you tell me what is the correct way according to what he said below?

vce2005 - "All you do is to slide the FAT slider to your left, then select ext4 and set it to approx. 2000, then select swap and set it to approx. 2000, then slide the FAT slider all the way back to the right and start the process.....
hey vce."

me - "i can only get to 2053 mb on the dial. i can't get it to approx 2000mb."

i have a 10 graded 32gb sdcard. id like to have 2gb on internal storage and plenty of room on sdcard. i didn't want to waste any space either.any suggestions for how i should make the partitions in sdparter? also if i repartition my sdcard do i need to re-flash the rom again?

Yea, vice has it right, you may have just slightly misunderstood.

When you slide the top spider to the left, its so you can create the third partition. You want the first one to be Fat, the second to be ext4, and the third to be either ext4 (for SSM) or swap (for data mode)

The top number (the fat partition) is the one that you want the largest. Its the one your going to use for storage. The second and third should be the ones set roughly to 2000. (Which is roughly 2gb)

The number you are selecting is the size in mb. 1024mb= 1gb

And as far as repartitioning goes, you may as well reflash, since reformatting will essentially factory reset your phone anyways :)

hey lordvincent

oh ok i see now. had a another question tho. which one do i pick when you said "either ext4 (for SSM) or swap (for data mode)" i picked data mode when i redid my phone the other day cause that's what i read in the instructions that i think vce gave me.

oh yeah i forgot that it will reset my phone anyways. silly me hehe :D.

please let me know about my question when you can. thanks bro.

forgot to let you two know that i tried your suggestions but they didn't work :(. thanks tho for your help. after i repartition and reflash i will try your suggestions again to see if my usb cable still doesn't properly read my cell.

If your going to use data mode, then pick swap for the third. You only need a third if you plan to use swap when using data mode. So if you don't even plan to use swap, you don't need the third one at all.

In that case just slide the third one to 0, and the second to ~2000 and then make the first one (the fat partition) as big as it will go. (~30,000)

Its really all about how you personally want it to be set up.

ok. thanks for the info. what does swap do exactly btw. cause now im trying to figure out if its even worth having cause i don't have to have data mode when i redo my phone.

Swap acts as virtual memory, it increases your ram by using part of your sdcard as Linux swap. (Kinda like paging files in windows)

i see. sounds like its good to have swap then. thanks for the tips, guys. i will report back here if this all solves my problem with the usb being recognized.

hey guys

i'm about to redo my phone. but i wanted to mention something. i tried my mom's cellphone with my usb cable that ive been using and it worked for her phone. my computer detected it. so it's not my usb cable. it must be my phone or my usb driver on my computer. i noticed that it says something different when my mom's cell is plugged in in the "safely remove hardware and eject media" button on the right hand corner of the screen. it says "Eject Samsung Android USB Device". whereas mine says when plugged in "Eject Samsung SPH-M820 Card USB Device". Im not sure if i need it to say what my mom's cell says in order for it to work properly. i tried Revo uninstaller Pro several times in removing the usb drivers for Samsung several times and it still says that for my phone. is this all connection to why phone won't detect my usb?

btw my mom's model number is SPH-M820-BST, Android 2.3.6. my model number is
the same.

ok i tried to try the instructions i got vce again which worked in the past, but it gave me a error. what i did was i went to Clockworkmod menu and hit install zip from sd-card. but it said: "e:can't mount /sdcard/". i tried to install the rom from goomanager also and it first said: "invalid md5 sum". but then after that it installed. so does anyone know what is wrong with my sdcard? it is screwed? cause im beginning to think so. :(

you could try repartitioning your card to have only a FAT partition and see how it does after that

Sounds like it. My other prevail gets that message from time to time, but that card is jaaaaaacked... I can't even get it to pop out. Best bet would be to see if another card causes the same issue. Still, that sucks.

Or just try what kouma said.

yeah im thinking this card is screwed for good. my mom wants to get a sd card for herself cause she's run out of room on her phone. i was thinking id buy another one for myself but before i do that i wanna make sure if the sdcard is able to work again or not. tho i think im under warranty still so ill have to look into that.

i didn't think of trying her sdcard when i was testing her phone on my usb cable to my computer. ill do that soon.

here's a noobish question but i just wanna make sure i do it right. kouma said

im actually not exactly sure how to do that. can someone tell me? like i said i just wanna do it right.
