Help regarding signal loss and tower transfers

Hi everyone,

I just received my evo v and was wondering about a signal loss problem i had upon returning home off the subway..the activation process went smooth..radio shack did the activation..however, when i turned the phone on it would not receive a signal, i restarted the phone and got a signal right away....my question is is that a software related issue ????
Also, I am hearing alot about cell phone tower transfer issues is that also a software related issue??????????
As far as I understand if the phone initially receives a signal then doesn't it cant be the hardware of the phone...I hope I'm right...

Only tower hopping issues I had were with 4G, and I don't think they can avoid that because they are 2 different networks. Honestly I would not use 4G unless sitting still in good coverage, it doesn't work well while traveling.

All of these phones use a PRL, or list of towers they should connect to and use. PRL's are specific for each carrier so you don't connect to a tower that won't allow you any service (the tower verifies your phone's ID before it allows you to put data/voice through it).

The current PRL is 61008 that was just updated (settings>about phone>Software info>More). You can try to update your PRL if you think there is an issue (Settings>system updates>Update PRL). This won't hurt anything to try.

Your initial problems may have been that your PRL did not update yet and you were connecting to bad towers.

As far as hopping 3G towers you should not notice any problems or have to reset anything. Again, I would use 4G like Wifi, keep it off till you are somewhere stationary and just turn it on.

There is definitely a tower transfer issue. At first I thought it was just a minor hick up but it has been happening more frequently. I go to an area with no service and stay there for about 20 min. I leave there and enter a perfectly serviceable area and my phone still shows no service. It stays that way until I restart the phone. This happened a few times and gets really annoying. I think Virgin really messed up the launch for this phone. It's a wonderful phone but Virgin is dropping the ball bad. I hope we get an update soon.

Hey everybody, there's a good app to use called opensignalmaps. It should help you see what exactly is going on with your signal. It can even show the location of the tower your connected to. Also you can refresh the phone connection to get a better signal if you have to.

I read that updating the prl might be a solution to the signal problem wont know about the tower issue till tomorrow when i use the subway then check when i go upstairs street level and see if the phone locks onto a signal......this type of stuff really creates stress for me....I shouldnt have to worry about these issues and just be able to enjoy the phone..

No phone/carrier can graciously handle 3G/4G handoffs at this time. As far as acquiring a signal after being in a no service area have you tried toggling airplane mode to see if that corrects the issue? This is a widely prevalent issue affecting numerous phone models.
