Release date ? (BBY Xoom page active as of 2/20)

As of right now, no. We haven't seen anything on our end to suggest there is a wifi coming out soon.

Awww, do you think it's going to be a while after the subsidized model is released? Or do you think it will follow it pretty quickly?

Did you also see this part of that post, "You should also know that you won’t be able to re-activate the data package on this device whenever you like at no cost. An activation charge will be enforced each time you re-activate."

Sucks for those that are wanting to be able to do that.

That is a direct contradiction to Verizon's own policy, so I highly doubt Best Buy would have any luck enforcing that.

I actually asked my Verizon rep about that very thing last week, and was told that the activation only applies at purchase of the device. If I were to discontinue use of the data plan for any period of time (no matter how long), another activation fee would not be charged.

Yeah saw that. Sucks. With each week that passes, iPad2 gets closer and closer tempting some to wait and see rather than impulsively buy. Tick-Tock Motorola, you're on the clock.

Best Buy doesn't charge the activation. Verizon will. And there won't be any way around it. The reason they charge it is because they have to issue you a new phone each time you activate. I guess the FCC charges them and in turn they charge you.

I can confirm that the pre-order date is pushed back as well. To Sunday. This is due to an agreement with Motorola. Not Best Buy's call. It will still be released on the 24th.

right i see nothing wrong with the pre order date being pushed back. it just means my pre order money burns a bigger hole in my pocket.. the launch date as of now remains unchanged which is all that matters.

heck the preorder date can be feb 23 for all i care as long as that launch date is the 24th... :D

the tbolt preorder date was on super bowl sunday wasnt it? ;-)

Is the 24th for the WiFi-only model as well?? :D

So far Motorola has not specifically said yes or no. I'm sure all their press releases and comments are well discussed beforehand so just another chapter in their marketing strategy. By the 20th if not before is my uninformed guess.

I hope this is true. I'm weighing the pros and cons of wifi-only vs 3g/4g, and "re-activation" fees would be a big disincentive. I can see myself using the 3g on occassion when traveling, but would hate to pay a minimum of $55 every time i turn it on.

Have you thought about just using your phone as a wireless modem when traveling? I mean that is what I do with my current laptop and it works just fine. My plan is to do the WiFi only and use my phone as a modem.

Kinda defeats the purpose of dropping an extra $200 bucks for 3G/4G device. I'm assuming he doesn't want wait, and just going buy that model.

When I had a sprint galaxy tab, i was unable to tether with my rooted droid. There was a work around but it involved rooting the tab and changing some code (ad hoc to infrastructure? Cant remember, but i wasnt comfortable with the process). I dont think i'll want to mess with the xoom!

I am rooted BUT I use the Verizon 3G Hotspot app meaning I am paying $20 a month for 2 GBs of Data but I wouldn't see why it wouldn't let you. I mean the hotspot is recognized by computers as a wireless router so it should be just fine...we will see.

Just a few things I wanted to add about this "re-activation" fee. This change would HAVE to come from Verizon they are the provider of the service BestBuy only helps push the product. With that being said Verizon did a ton of changes to there policies when the iPhone came over. They could very well change this policy as well, but for time being it hasn't changed (one time activation fee).

Also EVEN if it does change, people who pay for tethering with there phones may not be effected. So essentially you could turn on hotspot for your phone to get service for your Xoom, and then cancel hot spotting when you don't need it. Your not re activating a product your simply adding a feature onto your phone plan. This obviously doesn't mean much to people who root, and use hotspot.

Some what confirms what me, and few others have said. It may be that BB is out to make money on activating devices, and forcing these data plans onto customer to get commissions.

I am going to do the samething. I have a Rooted EVO with Wireless Tether and will just use that. No need to pay $200 extra for a Radio I will NEVER use
