[RELEASED] The 4.3 inch "Thunderbolt" aka "Mecha" aka "Incredible HD" from HTC...beyond coming soon!

He said PHONES not phone, he said they still are planning to have LTE phones by the second half of 2011. He means more then one, that has nothing to do with when the TB will launch.

It also doesn't imply that the TB will be released in Q1. The only fact from that statement by the CTO is that LTE phones - which includes the Thunderbolt - will be ready by the end of Q2.

How can you say he was talking about every other LTE phone other than the TB??

That title is very deceptive. It's like saying because a car can go 140mph, everyone will automatically get a speeding ticket in the first couple days of owning one.

Here is some examples. I don't know how they will relate to real world 4G phone data use.

Talk about picking fly sh!t out of pepper.

Yet another example of people turning, twisting and assuming a person meant something specific by extrapolation.

it doesn't imply anything. anything you get from the article is purely based on how ever you choose to twist the words.

could he mean the tb might not come til end of Q2? yes. based on rumors and things verizon has hinted at will it come out at the end of Q2? no

everything we know is purely speculation at this point regardless

So? You miss the point. Just because the speed is there, doesn't mean you have to use it constantly. Will people go over the limit with Hulu or Netflix? Perhaps once or twice. I promise you, one or two bills of overages and people will change their habits. Then the services will fail on mobile.

I don't think VZW wants that. They want to be able to support these kinds of apps for casual usage. They want to strike the balance between letting users use these features without undo gouging so they can advertise how awesome they are and not letting bandwidth hogs completely saturate the network doing whatever.

If you watch the actual Q and A that is being quoted the question asked was if the LTE network was ready. The CTO stated that are on track with their goal of having LTE phones by 2nd half of 2011. Meaning they will have multiple phones running on the LTE network by 2nd half 2011.

The only people twisting things from that statement are those that are looking to turn anything said by VZW into something about the TB. The question being asked had nothing to do with the TB, it was asking about the network.

Understood. I wanted to put the idea of data tiers for 4G in perspective. Will the average user understand the LTE speeds? If you are coming from the 3G world you could be in for a big surprise at the end of the month. We don't know what will be offered tier-wise (if any at this point) and the real world data consumption rates of the 4G phones and new apps like Netflix, Skype Google Cloud (music,etc.).

I hope nobody thinks I am trying to twist anything. I found out about the new delay from a news article.

HTC Thunderbolt, Verizon 4G LTE Phones Not Launching Until Summer

Aren't we pretty much saying the same thing then? - The only take away from the statement is that LTE phones will be ready by the end of Q2. And if the network isn't ready until that time, then neither are the phones... His statement really is that straight forward.

The rumors mean nothing, I'll trust a statement by a C-level executive speaking to shareholders any day over rumors on forums and blogs and twitter.

Add:

And for clarification - by the end of Q2 means anytime from now until June 30.

I'm not trying to say that you are, however that isn't a news article, that is a blog that is posting their opinion of what the CTO meant. What the blogs are posting are not news, they are trying to be the first to post information. They have the same information as everyone here does, they don't know anything.

The beauty is this is all real simple :)

If the TB is released and 3G is still offered and you can upgrade to 4G if you want- cool! No trojan effort by VZW to force people out of 3G :)

If VZW stops offering 3G unlimited and forces people to get 4G for their best devices- seems more than obvious the intent. Everything is being done to push out 3G unlimited users.

Sure, you may be able to keep 3G, but it will not be using their "best" devices, since they may be tiered, 4G only.

The first test on conspiracy validity is probably less than a month away with the Blunderbolt.

Yes we are :) , I just think that people are looking way to far into his statement. He wasn't asked about the TB, he is simply stating there are issues with the network and they are working on them. He then goes on to say that the phones will be out before the 2nd half of 2011. He never once mentioned "We won't be launching any LTE phones until summer", which is what all the doom and gloomers are trying to twist that to say.

Right, I can see that. Also keep in mind, Netflix doesn't encode at 1 rate. They encode as several rates. I think the lowest they're encoding at now is 375kbps with their VC1 streams. If iPhones are supported, I'm guessing they're streaming H264 as well and I can't find data on that. I would guess it's at least as good as VC1 compression rates if not better. I don't see Thunderbolt supporting hardware decoding of VC1 in any spec I can find, so it's probably utilizing the same data streams as the iPhone.

I'm guessing most service providers are tweaking their data encoding / usage for mobile *knowing* that data caps are a problem. They want users to use their apps/services. The app/service is no good if people won't use it because they're too afraid of running over their data caps all the time.

Catch is most may not afford it ;)

May come to the point it is better to have a cheap smart phone and a small tablet for media- using wifi. Tell VZW and all of them to bite the big kahoney! :)

How would buying a tablet & using it on wifi be better than just using the smartphone on wifi? Everyone is acting like once you get this phone you can only use 4G for data. It will be able to use wifi (when available), LTE (on the go & in LTE coverage), and 3G (on the go & not under LTE coverage). Granted some apps may not work with 3G, but it doesn't mean you have to use LTE for everything. If that were the case why even have wifi on the phone? I stay on wifi whenever possible & use 3G only when necessary. Only when my wifi router went down did I use 3G exclusively and then I only was around 700mb.

Smart man , that's the way to do it.

I do the same - WiFi when available - and will probably do the same with the TB because of possible data caps. I think the point is more about if you're using WiFi all the time, then why pay for the 4G/3G service - which you are required to do with a smartphone. Instead get a WiFi only tablet - even an iPod touch. I wouldn't do that, but I think that's the point he/she was trying to get across

Bennnnn

I never said tiered pricing was definite. There are many options being considered.

Anyways, heres a video I thought might entertain you guys.

Enjoy.

Very weird... :P

Just curious I came to VerizonWireless in december is this type of release normal like as what I have heard about the incredible and the froyo update?
