Help Replaced broken touch screen, now won't recognize SD card

Hello -

This is my first post but I have the feeling there will be lots more to come once I get this issue resolved. So about a two weeks ago I dropped my Hero and the screen shattered. Then, while trying to do a Nandroid backup, I accidentally wiped all the phone storage data. After wiping the phone, the SD card was fine. I then ordered a replacement touch screen and installed it myself (because Sprint refused to help me due to the broken screen AND a red moisture indicator! wtf?!?!)

Anyways, the install seemed to go fine and everything was fine except a notification started popping up saying the SD card had been removed and a new one needed to be inserted. Well, it had been removed, but I put it back. I've tried multiple combinations of rebooting the phone and taking out/putting back in the SD card. Nothing works. I even thought I'd just reformat the card and start all over, but in the settings menu when I try to look at the card, the option to format it is greyed out.

Of course, without an SD card I can't take photos, video, install all the stuff I had on it, do a Nandroid backup, root the phone, etc. etc.

Any ideas? I'm hoping to get my hands on a card reader ASAP to determine if its possibly a problem with the card itself but I'm worried that in disassembling the phone I messed up the phone's internal card reader. Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions/advice?

Thanks!
Andrew

I even thought I'd just reformat the card and start all over, but in the settings menu when I try to look at the card, the option to format it is greyed out.

That means that the handset thinks the card is still mounted. Is the "Unmount card" option available? If so try that then see if the "Format..." option is then enabled.

Btw, I've moved this to the HTC Hero (Sprint) section.

This exact same thing happened to me a few months ago. I have been a computer tech for 10 yrs., and have repaired various ipods, etc., so i was very careful and somewhat knowledgeable when i replaced my screen. My micro-SD card had been in the phone for 6 months, and had never been removed once until I started to replace the screen. I was sure to pull the battery before removing the card. After re-assembly, lo and behold, my card was not recognized, no matter what i did. I even used an SD card adapter to see if my computer would recognize it and it wouldn't. Turns out, the card got damaged somehow just from me ejecting it from the phone. Tried a different smaller card I had laying around and it worked! My card had just died for no apparent reason from being ejected. Hope this helps!

Yup, I think I may have powered down the phone with the card mounted and then turned it on without the card in it? Used another phone to try and mount the card and the same thing happened. A good card mounted and unmounted as usual.
