Replacement Dialer for DX for those who want T9 (smart) dialing..

Didn't bother reading the entire thread. If you hold the menu key while under the contacts menu, it brings up a keyboard and you can quickly search your contacts using it.

Yep, this or this work well for me...

Thanks guys. It ONLY works on the numbers listed my "favorites" and "contacts" list. I was in call log. DOH! This is gonna be great. It's going to be my default keyboard. Cudos to you guys for your help!

You see that magnifying glass hard button on the lower right? Click it once and start typing the name. Or hold it down and speak into it.

We need an Android 101 sticky on this forum asap esp for the HTC people.

i agree, it sucks...hopefully moto can include an update to enable t9 dialing... i under stand there are other ways to dial and i use voice dialing and vlingo. but is it so hard to ask for moto do include a t9 dialer?

Unless I am missing something here, the X and Moto in general does a pretty crapy job of helping you initiate a phone call. Scrolling through your contacts, favorites, or recent calls while driving down a bouncy road with your eyes and finger focused on the screen is a horrible way to make a call when compared to the Incredible's features. Why can't we just hit the first few letters of the person we want to call? I assume it is Blur vs. Sense.

Yeah well you should keep your eyes on the road anyway lol but i do agree it is difficult coming from an inc

Hmm... apparently I must be mis-understanding something. If I go into the dialer app or the contacts app and long press the options button I get a keyboard. I can then type the first few characters of a contact and it will find it for me. I then press the green handset button and I'm dialing.

Is this different from what y'all are discussing?

I just click the hard button on the right. Quick search. :) Same as the google widget but it's always there unlike the google widget (depending on what screen you have it on).

well I have to say that "Scrolling through your contacts, favorites, or recent calls while driving down a bouncy road with your eyes and finger focused on the screen is a horrible way to" drive

I like gesture search. Just draw a letter with your thumb and you have it! If not draw he next letter. It easier than both HTC and MOTO dialer IMO

Or replace it there are several good options in the market.

ha well looks like this is put to rest

when I do that it searches the internet. Where do you tell it to serch contacts and local stuff on the phone.

got it, ty! now it's the default dialer! it's superior to stock!

Oh, and I've never seen this, but when you get a call from someone not in your contacts, it asks if you want to save the number! NICE!

All you have to do is when in the stock dialer is press the search button, then you can type the first few letters. One extra button press from the htc dialer. Worth it to be rid of Sense.

I use "gesture search". It is even easier than dialing the first few letters because you write them on the screen freehand.

From the home screen hit: menu > settings > search > searchable items.

Once you get into the habit of using the search, you won't care about the dialer.

I might be missing something here... I installed Dialer One, definitely better than stock for the T9 predictive (that's what I'm used to anyway from my Env2) and made it default when I launched. But my Home double-tap shortcut still opens the default dialer. Anyway around this?

EDIT: I just noticed something else weird... so Dialer One is just a shortcut to make phone calls? Because I just made a call and it actually switches over to the default dialer during the phonecall and then after the phonecall, I'm sitting on the default dialer... the T9 predictive is nice but shouldn't Dialer One replace the whole thing? Or is that a ROM issue that you can't replace that...

Android n00b here so excuse the ignorance. And thanks in advance.

hmm, that is strange. i've been using dialer one since the first day i had this x. i haven't seen that glitch at all, dialer one is my default and i haven't seen the crappy stock dialer ever since... whenever i see something weird i just do a reboot, but i'm also a newbie, don't know any other tricks

Dialer One is better than the default, but is there any way I can just get the full keyboard to come up instead of a 9-key? It would be much more natural to search this way. I rarely call anyone not in my contact list.
