Help **Request** Ascend PRL 3020 Update Tutorial

I was able to use a program called QPST v2.7 which is like CDMA Workshop but free to do this. I'm not great at making guides but I'll just tell you what I did.

Here is the QPST I use and the PRL. I'd love to give credit to whoever originally obtained the PRL but to be honest I don't even remember where I got it. It is safe tho and works,that I can assure.

1. Installed QPST.

2. From the start menu I found the QPST folder and started QPST Configuration

3. Had my Ascend connected and opened Device Manager and expanded the Ports icon. I took note of the COM number listed beside the DBAdapter Reserved Interface,which in my case was (COM15)

4. In QPST Configuration I clicked Add New Port at the bottom right and selected the COM15 and enabled it.

5. After that I went back to the start menu,QPST and opened Service Programming. A box popped up asking for a phone and since I only had the one I just clicked OK and a new box with alot of tabs opened.

6. If you go to the Roam tab at the bottom there is a Preferred Roaming area with an area asking for a file. Browse for the PRL and when finished click the Write to Phone button at the bottom of the window. It will ask for your SPC. After that it writes to the phone and the phone reboots on its own. You should let it reboot fully and not unplug it from the computer or mess with QPST while it's doing so.

When the phone is done booting you can close the program and unhook the phone. It took about 10 minutes for data to start working but 3G works fine on it when I'm in a 3G area. My Ascend is using the bloatware free stock 2.2 ROM found on here and I've had no problems for the week with it. Hopefully this can be helpful for someone and sorry if it's not made out too well,pretty bad at explaining things

I'm guessing that you have other devices using COM ports. From your phone there should be one called "Android Adapter" and another called "DBAdapter Reserved Interface" The one you want is that DBAdapter. Jot down the (COM#) beside it,that's what you'll use in QPST.

It's no worries. If this doesn't work for you the worst that happens is you get no data. All you'll have to do is do the *228 thing and it'll reset your PRL back to 3019.

I guess you're using Windows XP then? Try right clicking the DBAdapter and click properties. In the Port Settings tab,click Advanced. There will be a part at the bottom that has a box with (COM#) in it.

You edited your post while I was replying But can you find a COM port in the properties?

Was trying this morning but could not get QPST to see my phone. I'm using XP. DBAdapter Reserved Interface is showing twice in Device manager but both say that they aren't connected. And I get an error when I try to enable the COM ports that they are showing. I've even tried changing the ports but to no avail. Weird thing is, even when my phone is not connected through USB the DBAdapter Reserved Interface still shows. I installed the drivers and I am able to connect through USB Mass storage however whenever I plug in I still get the Add New hardware wizard showing Android Mobile Adapter but can never get the driver to install. But ADB and Mass storage always works so I never worried about it until now. Could that be the reason QPST isn't seeing my phone?? What can I do about it?

You my friend are the shiznit! Im watching it in the settings and I have PRL 3020 I have 1x right now but I saw it switch to 3G! (Just must not be in a good area) But it works!

Edit- Since 1x still works this means this PRL will work with 1x and 3G. So even if you dont have 3G in your area you will still be good to go. You'll just be ahead of the game. I was in the settings when it switched to 3G and watched it go from CDMA 1xRTT to EVDO and then switch back.

Ive have ran speed tests using the SpeedTest.net app before and like right now while on 1x it has always set my nearest server as Cocoa, FL but when I went into the app while I had 3G (it went out right before I ran the test) it set the nearest server was in Wichita, Kansas?!




Edit- I had to call *228 and switch back. No data would go out it would just come in. But that just means theres hope! Ahaha Worth a shot

Yeah man. First download MEID Converter from the Market.(Thanks Codawg) Type in your MEID-DEC code. (Its on your box the phone came in and I think its under your battery too. I just used the box because I have it on my desk to put crap in) and it will give you your 6 digit SPC code. Write it down. I then had to download the Ascend USB Drivers. These are the ones Nuttmeg has posted quite a few times. I think he might of even put them together. Then i had to download a rar extractor program because that file is a rar and I didnt have one. After you install the RAR program open it and select UnRAR and browse to you downloads to the USB drivers and "UnRAR" them. Then it will put another file in your download section click it and then click "PCOptions" then I think 3 icons pop up click the one all the way to the left. A little window will pop up saying "Configuring" or something like that when that goes away plug your phone in and the drivers will install. After they install mount your usb storage. (Pull down your status bar hit mount storage)

Yes,my phone has (capped) 3G and works just fine with 3G or 1x. The mediafire link in my earlier post is both the installer for QPST and the PRL file I used and re-uploaded myself. I'm thinking there may be some other issue tho. While it worked perfectly for my own Ascend,I used the same process on a friend's and it didn't work. I'm not sure if I should blame it on chance or the fact mine uses the debloated 2.2 and his uses debloated 2.1 If anything I read somewhere else it's "possible" to manually replace the PRL with ADB shell but I'd prefer to leave something like that to someone just alittle better with it than I.

Ok I wasn't in any diag mode. I am on PG's 2.2.2 build as well. When I clicked on"write to phone" and it started doing its thing, the phone rebooted but a warning box popped up telling me my phone was no longer connected to QPST. Is that normal?

yes since it did reboot, and the usb will not work while your in the boot animation.

It will switch on its own when you get 3G signal. When I first did it I only had 1x and when I went to settings/about phone to see if the PRL changed it was still on 1x receiving 1x RTT then I watched the 3G icon pop up and my signal change to EvDo Rev. A and then a couple seconds later switched back to 1x. And then it would switched to 3G again and stayed on 3G for a good half hour or so. But then I couldnt get no data to go out. So I dont if its because 3G signal isnt that good where I live or if possibly its that PRL.
