huh. i guess maybe I never noticed. My phone appears to stay on for the duration of my call. I never made any changes to it. The only thing that DOES happen, is the screen turns off when the phone is up to my head, but it comes right back on when I take the phone away from my head. It doesn't actually go to sleep unless I hit the power button. I've used it multiple times for multi-hour conference calls at work. Mine is a Sprint HTC One. Wouldn't think it would be different for other carriers, but maybe it is.

That doesn't preclude there being some option for that, but I don't know what it is, and never set it. This was the default behavior from the first day I got my phone.

I wonder if it is related to what kind of lockscreen behavior you have? I don't use a password or PIN or anything to unlock. I just swipe to unlock. I know that a lot of times, if you sync to some Exchange servers, they can force security policies onto your phone. Several co-workers have that on their various Android phones. Even though they are personal phones, because they connect to the Exchange server, certain security policies are pushed down, one of which requires the use of an actual lock screen with PIN or password.

Im the same as you i don't use a lock i just swipe to open. like i said i have looked around and i dont see an option. thanks for replying.

Whoever did this i thank you sir.

I have started having an intermittent problem with my phone screen during and after a call. As it is supposed to do, my phone screen goes black when next to my face. However there are times when I take it away from my face and the screen does not light back up. I try pushing the power button and touching the screen, but it does not work. When I push the power button the screen will flash showing the green bar (call in progress if you leave call screen) on the top and my home screen very briefly, but not long enough that I can actually drag the call screen back up. I do not have a screen protector or case that interferes with or is over the proximity sensor. I keep my phone in power save mode. I have updated to the latest software version. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, new to the forum and hope somebody can help me out with this issue I've been having for a few months with my HTC One. Not sure if it's Android or Phone specific.

When I'm on a call and pull the phone away from my face to do something, I basically can't use the phone. As soon as I try to do something the screen will go blank. Though it was the proximity sensor, but if you look at the vid below you can see my hands aren't need there when it turns off.

Today for example, I tried to unlock the phone to respond to an SMS when I was on a call... and I just couldn't ever get to it. I made a video of what I'm trying to describe. Hope someone can be of help:

I noticed every time you turned the screen on, your fingers went over the prox' sensor. I take it youve tried doing it differently?

Yes, tried different ways. Even when I press the button from behind it does it. And even when I pull it away from my face but do nothing it will promptly switch off.

Tried resetting the device to factory settings, took off all cases and screen protectors, etc.

Im stumped then bro sorry. Maybe its an HTC thing.
Want me to ask a mod to move this to the HTC One forum?

Wherever is most appropriate and most likely to get an answer. Thanks funkylogik! You're up late for a Scotsman

I know man. 5:30am lol. My sleeping habits are a mess! Gona try n stay awake till tonight to fix it.
Keep an eye on your PMs mate. A mod should send you a link.
Good luck

Took care of it.

Proximity sensor is my first thought too, hut that's very strange

What happens if you hold it up to a light source?

Thanks boss. Yes, strange and very annoying.

What happens If you repeat what your doing in the video with a flashlight shone on the portion of the phone where the proximity sensor is?

It *should* stay on.

Obviously not a solution to the problem, but it can help diagnose

I've tried that a few times when I was outside in daylight, and also inside under lights - still shuts off.

Download an app called elixir 2. It can show you all of your phones sensors and you can test them from there

Test the proximity sensor and verify its working correctly

Proximity sensor is my first thought too,
So what if a phone is in an Otterbox and is BLOCKING the Proximity sensor preventing it from working right ?

My phone's screen goes dark and STAYS dark whenever I have it on Speakerphone. Can't change ANY functions except Volume and ending the call with the Power button. Can NOT get the screen back on to take the phone OFF Speakerphone!

Extremely FRUSTRATING !

I'll Post a separate thread since it's not directly related to the original topic.

no need to start a thread on that.

if you remove the case form the phone, does the phone act properly? if it does, then you know its the case.

Hi I am having trouble with the phone randomly going to speaker phone when I am in a call and nearly deafening me. also it has gone into mute when I am making a call. I know it has to be the sensor that is allowing the icons to be active and I normally hold the phone to my cheek . any advice to stop this or can I turn off the mute speaker buttons or make the sensor stay on... Thank you..

Hi and welcome to the forums! :)

Normally the screen goes off when you hold the phone near your head during calls:

With the phone dialler open:

menu button
call settings
tick "Auto screen off during calls"

(Dont have your phone but it will be similar I think)
