Help Responsiveness of phone

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and I am finding it particuarily slow. In particular it is when using the Back or Home button. For example, when I exit the email program (via either of the buttons mentioned above) the phone takes up to 5 seconds to return to the home screen. Often for 3 of those seconds the application remains displayed, then the screen goes blank and then the home screen appears. I have most animations, etc. turned off to maximise battery life so I'm not quite sure why it takes so long.

It is very frustrating as it is quicker to dial a number of the phone on my desk rather than wait for the phone to respond to find a contact and call them that way. These things are supposed to reduce our workloads and make technology simpler to use, etc. but this is not the case for me.

Any suggestions? I have turned on USB debugging so when I get home I can see if I can download any loags which may report failure events which could be causing this. I've got the latest firmware running on the device too.

Cheers,

Mike

hmm.. there's sometimes a 'homescreen lag', but thats only like a 1-2 second lag between the time u press and the time ur back on the homescreen.. so something's pretty wrong, i think.. do u know wat firmware ur running? go to ur dialer, type *#1234# and see wat comes up, and let us know.. i dont know if a newer firmware would help, coz i never had such slow performance even on my earliest firmware but its worth a shot

Thanks for the prompt reply! The version info is as follows:

PDA: I9100BUKG2
PHONE: I9100BUKG1
CSC: I9100VODKE2
Build Info: Mon Jul 4 16:03:12 KST 2011

I noticed that whilst using the dialler it was also interrupting the music player operating in the background (i.e. breakage in the audio output as if it is struggling servicing applications or something).

To be honest, ever since I've had the handset (and this is my first Android handset) there has always been an unexplainable lag going back to the home screen but it is worse now compared to when I first owned it.

Hello and welcome to android Forums mike_s_price.

I agree with heshanj, it does seem that there is a problem with a lag of that magnitude.

Although you say you have the latest firmware, that is a movable feast depending on whether you are rooted and on a customised ROM or if you are on a stock ROM it depends on your location and operator.

An app that I find very useful is Android System Info, free from the Market, as this can give you a whole host of information, such as battery usage and RAM.

I'm wondering if you have a rogue app running that is consuming your RAM and slowing your phone down.

You can see running applications by going to...

Settings > Applications > Running services

well there's nothign wrong with ur firmware, its one of the newer ones out there, u should not have any issues with it.. ironass has posted the only thing i can think of too.. some app consuming ur resouces so much that its killing ur phone's ability to function at top level

I thought it may be something like that. I suspect that I'll just do a factory reset of the phone and return it to it's original configuration. I don't have many apps on the phone, but unfortunately I use them all so it'll just become a really big phone.

Hopefully it'll all get sorted out at some point such as allowing the user to define the priorities of the applications and services running as surely servicing the HCI should be pretty high up on the list otherwise the user may believe that the interface/device is no longer responding.

It's also annoying that whereas you can report/log faults associated with applications failing, you can't report/log faults related to Samsung's applications (in particular the quite useless keyboard app which crashes frequently for me, most of the time when switching portrait/landscape format).

I'll dig into the aps later on and see what I can find to sort it out as it's almost at the point where I use other devices to achieve the action rather than wait for this phone.

I've not tried it yet. I'll wait until I get home tonight and try a few things. A reset then remove one app at a time and see if I can find the culprit then report it when I do so that the developers know that it's behaviour is broadly unacceptable.

I uninstalled some apps bit it made no visible difference. I turned the phone off and then back on and the issue seems to have gone away. I suspect some application was cumulatively gathering data or increasing the processing it was requiring. unfortunately i am unlikely to find out which one.

Thanks for your help though!

If your phone was better after a reboot then you likely got a bad piece of software that is either sucking up your CPU resources or leaking memory.

Tell us what you have installed.
