Root Retain data and upgrade to Gingerbread?

Is there a way to retain all of my data and installed apps while upgrading to the latest GB release? I tried the original GB release but that required a fresh install. I wasn't crazy about that since trying to find what apps I had installed was frustrating. I reverted back to my nandroid backup of Froyo. Later I tried the second release of GB which installed over Froyo. This was nice and kept my apps but it didn't have root and the sync icon stayed on constantly. I'm tempted to try the latest rooted version but wasn't sure if it would retain my data. My phone is rooted and I do have Titanium Backup and Clockwork recovery. Thanks for any info!

the only way to retain data on gb is if you are on the first leak make a backup and after the whole install process of the new leak is over with boot into recovery and scroll to backup/restore and then advanced and select the gb backup you made on the original leak and restore data only, i have seen mixed reviews with people restoring data with tibu from froyo to gb and i would not recommend it from one system version to the next

I have had not a single problem restoring data from TiBu. I think the big problem is when people restore system settings from one version to another.

Back up your app data only using Titanium Backup. Backup your SMS and call log using one of the many utilities available (like SMS Backup and Restore, or SMS Backup+). Then restore it once you upgrade. You'll have to re-pair with wifi and bluetooth and set up a few of the miscellaneous things.

Thanks for the input. I may try Titanium Backup again. I had tried a app only restore when I was testing out a different ROM but it didn't seem to work right. Although I couldn't have been using it wrong too. I'm not too concerned about SMS/Call logs, mostly just getting all of my apps back and saved settings for games. I purchased NSF:Shift but it no longer shows up as a purchased download for me so it won't re-install if I re-load everything. Kind of annoying.

Also, after you install the three parts, you can go back into Clockwork Recovery and do an "Advanced Restore" and restore only the Data from your backup. That's what I did and it worked flawlessly.

I'm assuming this would be from my nandroid backup under Froyo to restore from?

Upgraded my Fiancee's DX from .340 to .588 deodexed without wiping data. No issues at all, other than a few incompatible apps of course.

Not sure...I was coming from the first Gingerbread leak. I made a backup there, then SBFed back to 2.2, rooted that, applied the three .zip files in recovery and then restored my data through an advanced restore.

Me too, I just made a nandroid backup and installed it the newest rooted Gingerbread release. I was rooted, had a custom boot animation, but all my bloatware was intact.

It seems to be working fine, except for the sync icon issue everyone has. And I didn't lose an app or a contact.

At least for future ROMing, I know the boot loader doesn't matter, that's a relief. I hate trying to get that back to normal.

Thanks for the info. I just jumped in and applied the 3 ZIP install of GB over my existing Froyo install. Everything appears to be working correctly and all apps were retained. The only issue that I had was the sync icon issue which I ended up just freezing the BlurContacts app with TB.
