Return 2.1 Eris to Verizon

I guess we can take the analogy to the extreme. Since we are all going to die but it hasn't happened yet, why is it a crime to kill people? We're going to die anyways. We can refrigerate the dead until it was surely there time to die then we can bury them. No harm, right?

Castro, I would just take it back. Truth is, I think I would have been fine had my wife not opened her big mouth about "that leaked 2.1 update thingy you put on" right in front of the guy. At no time do i condone hitting women, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to smother her mouth at the time. I knew he was gonna have an issue with it. Oh well, I like my phone. Just wanted to try the droid. no big deal. Hope you have better luck

The leak came from HTC, so its not like I "hacked" the phone. And it will update JUST FINE when the OTA comes out, so tell me.. Whats the problem with me wanting to return my phone? Its not going to cost you a dime, they just resell the phone as refurbished anyways. So I dont really know your issue is.

Is it lonely up there on your podium? Oh I see.. You have 8 posts. I smell a troll in the air...

right...
because i have 80 or so less posts than you, i must be a troll.
typical internet forum B.S...

your wanting to try out the Motorola DROID is not something i have an issue with.

i DO have an issue with everyone who is whining about problems with the unofficial OS that they loaded on their phone.

when i loaded the 2.1 LEAK, i accepted the possibility that i would a) brick my phone b) likely void any warranty i had with HTC/Verizon c) almost certainly have to contend with unexpected bugs/issues.

if you are going to engage in risky behavior, you should be willing to live with any and all potential consequences.

/end

Well, if someone comes into the store with a hacked iPhone, the genius' won't even look at it. We can't, it's a void of the warranty. If you factory reset your phone though, we can then service it.

We're not hacking out Eris', we just manually installed an update that's not official yet. We did not change the internal structure of the phone. I believe if you tried to return a rooted phone it would be more of a hassle than just having a leaked 2.1 on it...

I agree completely w4lly, but the vzw guy didn't see it that way. Like I said, he was kinda being a dick to begin with.

I'm just not sure who you are talking. Me or the OP? I'm fine with my phone, I was just telling my experience to help the guy out. Thats really what this forum is for. But if you'd rather bitch and moan about your personal feelings and not contribute any help, then so be it. Your reputation tends to stick with you here though, and if you dont respect, you wont be respected.

But I digress, please continue bitching and moaning...

that is my take on it

This is one of the reasons I purchased mine from BB and bought there 10.00 a month Swap Plan. As long as I have the parts, no matter what, they will replace the unit with a new one. I have only paid for two months and I may go back tomorrow and get another one. Because you pay by the month, there is no limit to how many times you can return, you just keep paying the 10.00 a month.

Good luck to all.

J

Thats cool of BB. Am I the only here that fell in love with the phone as soon as I saw it and even though there was already an existing phone on the line I wanted to put it on (as out is only 30 amonth as the voice minutes are included in the business plan) forced me to purchase the full retail price of 500 and happily did so anyway, and also love 2.1 and fine with waiting for the ota, and never consider really any other phone? And think google rocks and yes overpriced monthly contracts are bull shit of all their incredible customer service is being wasted on the next guy. My ex working at the store doesn't help though.

Honestly, I'm not sure what he cleared up. Its a gamble either way. If the employee doesn't check while the phone is being wiped, then you're good to go. But if he does, or he happens to go through it, you WON'T be able to return the phone because we installed an unofficial update, and voided the warranty in the process. This isn't really a debate. Its a fact.
I had several BB Storms replaced/returned with unauthorized OS's and never had a problem. Same with friends.

As stated in my post, its a gamble, and you got away with it. Congratulations. Maybe what happened to me was the exception rather than the rule, but it happened, and dude needed to know about it.

Thanks for your input.

wow, um

lexusbrian, grow some gonads and tell Verizon they are taking the phone back, i guarantee you 100% they would take my phone back if i wanted them too.

Preservation of the species is not threatened by the natural death of members of that species. It is threatened by the untimely death, including intentionally perpetrated by a murderer, of a member of that species; thus laws amongst the human species forbidding murder.

Verizon Wireless has pretty definitive terms for their worry-free guarantee and exchange policies.

At our discretion, we may decline your return or charge you a fee for a missing item, or for items that we determine are damaged or require service.
Within 30 days of purchase of new merchandise, you may exchange it one time. In order to make the exchange, return the merchandise (including phone, charger, battery, instructions, etc.) in its ORIGINAL box. All merchandise must be in like–new condition.
Devices subjected to neglect, misuse, liquid damage, unreasonable wear and tear and the like, are not eligible for any return or exchange program.
Since I am sure that they use these handsets as refurbished exchanges for warranty issues, I don't think that Verizon is being unreasonable about insisting that the phone be in a state that can be provided to another customer. If the ROM has been updated to a version that Verizon is not officially supporting, they cannot provide these handsets to another customer.

While I would hope that they would be a little more flexible, and perhaps in most cases they are, I think that if you are in those first 30 days and are even considering that you will exchange the device, I'd suggest avoiding installing the 2.1 ROM if you want to be sure that Verizon will honor that 30 day exchange.

All I have to say is that your success rate is probably directly related to the attitude you display when you ask someone to do something for you. If I was a VZW employee and some of the attitudes verbalized here were presented to me, you'd have a snowballs chance in hell of getting the benefit of doubt from me. Sorry, that's just human nature.

+1

Although not 100% true, true enough to agree strongly.

First, I'm not saying what you've said is false, but as a recommendation I would read through the terms and conditions for the swap plan with BB. I worked at BB for 3.5 years as a member of Geek Squad and what I can tell you, without a doubt, is that sales associates at Best Buy will tell you completely false information to get you to buy something. I know because I've witnessed it and what you said sounds like one of the things they tell people. It may not even be the sales guy's fault, it might have been how he was taught to sell it not even knowing it's false. All it takes is one sales guy who takes liberty with the terms and conditions and pretty soon the entire sales force thinks what he says is true because the guy trained all of them.

For example: Computer sales tells customers that under Black Tie that they can have their battery on a laptop replaced for free one time no matter what. They tell them that all they have to do is come in for their free battery. This is a big selling point for the Black Tie protection. I had people come in the day after they bought their laptop asking for their free battery so they can have a spare when they travel. What they don't know, because they didn't read the terms and were told something different, is that you get a replacement battery should your original battery be determined to be defective. It's not a "you get a free battery any time" condition.

What the swap plan sounds like is one of those things where they tell you "yea, we'll swap it whenever you want, it's free" when in reality there might be limitations on the number of times you can swap and the circumstances behind the swap. I would read the terms before I paid $10.00 every month if I were you.

Well in my case, I was still in the 30 day trial period, 2 weeks in, I wanted to try the Droid as the Eris wasn't powering through the programs I needed it to do....

You are only allowed 1 return in the 30 days. So if you "tried" the Droid, then the Droid is yours for the balance of the contract. You wouldn't have had the chance to get the Eris back. So in that matter you are probably lucky.

NO you cannot. If you do happen to get away with it, when the phone goes back to factory to be sent back out as "refurbished", you will get charged the FULL amount for the phone when they go through to reset it and see what you did to it. I found this out the hard way, TODAY. The verizon guy said since I "hacked" the phone, I voided the warranty. I wanted to slap the smug off his face. I'm sure he slapped a little note on my acct. too.

OUCH!! I have the leaked ROM and will wait for the "fix" to come out to address the minor bugs. Your situation is a lesson for all of us to learn patience. Which, of course, is a contradiction of terms with these devices :D

Well in my case, I was still in the 30 day trial period, 2 weeks in, I wanted to try the Droid as the Eris wasn't powering through the programs I needed it to do. That is (was) my right to do so. Until I altered the software. Now I'm stuck with the eris, which is fine with me, but I wanted to give the Droid a go to see what its all about. If I have to have a phone for the next 18 months, I want to like it. If Verizon didn't want people to have a 30 day option, then we wouldn't have one. But we do. So get over it.

I am still within my 30 days with my Motorola Droid. Verizon has upset me several times, and not getting 2.1 like I thought is a major turn off. A lot of the things 2.1 fixes are things that really matter to me. I use the headset all the time, and disconnecting wires from the 3.5 mm jack causes all sound to stop. That's REALLY ANNOYING. I have also had issues with Verizon messing up my bill, repeatedly. I am having serious thoughts about trying out T-Mobile. It would cost less now and in the long run, and I could get a Nexus one, a cheaper monthly bill, and service that's good enough in my area.

I don't know. As I said I'm still in a trial period, I am new to android, and like many of you I just want to enjoy a decent phone with a stable OS. Even my old blackberry storm had features built into the OS that the droid does not. First thing to come to mind, swiping photos in the gallery. 2.1 has it, 2.0 doesn't. I like the droid for many reasons, but I like Verizon less and less each day. I would rather have a phone that can do it all from the start, and get updates more quickly, rather than waiting for third fourth and fifth party corporates to care about their customers. Maybe I am willing to be the guy to help the rest of you out who are waiting. Let verizon lose a few customers over this, they might prepare better next time and care more about these things.
