Reviews and Video Thread

pocketnow has an unboxing. which is not bad; i know other unboxing showed this but one nice thing is that the micro-sdhc is not under the battery.

If someone sees a review that focus on reception/call quality please highlight it. I think there was a fellow in new york who used to review sprint phones that focus on this area; but i can't remember which site. The wirefly review (above) is very detail but doesnt' address call quality at all.

I asked Bob of Wirefly what his thoughts were concerning call quality considering he left it out of his review. Here is his response:

wirefly has replied to your comment on Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch Review - Part 2:

@unplugged1 Sorry... ran out of time. The Epic 4G Touch has good call quality, typical of the first series of Samsung Galaxy S phones. The audio is clear and has good volume... I'd say that it's better than average.

On one review (cant remember which, sorry), they showed how you can easily remove the bloatware. I'm glad to see Sprint followed through with what they said about making bloatware removable on future devices.

Yea, all you have to do is go into Settings, and manage the installed applications. Although you can't uninstall all of Sprints pre installed apps, being able to ditch some of this is a plus. I for one don't use their Nascar app.

Right on!
Funny though, the NASCAR app is one of my favorites. It's pretty cool what it is capable of during a Sprint Cup race. One thing I like is you Can listen to any of the radio conversation between any driver and crew chief. Guess if you're not a NASCAR fan, its not so cool though. Lol. But cool tech nonetheless.

You know, I like everything about this phone... but I need to check one out in person to see if I can live with the size.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, man up. I know.

But there's a point where holding a phone to your face the size of a tablet makes you look like a socially clueless techno-geek... the kind of guy who has no problem walking around a party with virtual reality glasses tethered to a laptop or acting out scenes from star trek at family gatherings.

I'm still up in the air if this phone has crossed that boundary. The infuse is darn close to crossing that line for me.

That's a pretty nice comparison tool there, unplugged. Here's a chart I made with sizes and visual matchups:

Like you said, the Infuse is larger all the way around than the Epic Touch. The Photon and Evo 3D, which are almost the same exact size, are both slightly thinner and almost the same height. The Epic Touch is slightly wider than the Evo 4G but significantly taller.

BTW, the dumbest thing I've read is comparing the size of the Epic Touch with the Dell Streak (this was mentioned in the Wired review). Seriously, they're not even close.

I don't get it. What's wrong with carrying around a good pair of virtual reality glasses or acting out star trek scenes? I mean, come on!

Seriously though. If you would be alright holding up the photon or evo 3d to your face this one is not that much different. Without holding them up side by side I seriously doubt anybody would be able to tell it was any larger.

So basically, the Epic Touch is essentially the same size as the Photon and Evo 3D, none of which are considered phone/tablet hybrids. It's taller than the Evo but should feel the same in your hand. Although technically smaller, it's essentially the same size as the Infuse.

And anyone comparing it to a Dell Streak is clueless.

That's what I'm hoping... I really like every other aspect of this phone.

Despite apple's propaganda, I think up to 5" is okay. You should go watch the videos of the Samsung Note which is 5.3" 720p phone. One of the videos shows the guy putting it to his ear and all i could think of was Gordon Gekko in Wall Street walking on the beach talking on his enormous 1987 cell phone. Cracked me up.

So. maybe 5" is the upper limit?

Not another review! The Droid Bionic vs. Epic 4g Touch SHAMACKDOWN!

Schmackdown! Motorola DROID Bionic vs Samsung Epic 4G Touch - YouTube

RESULTS:

Bionic - Won on: Storage (16GB card included)

Tie -- Bionic's Resolution vs. Icon size of Epic 4G Touch

Epic 4G Touch - Won on: Weight -- Screen Size -- Display Quality -- Photo Quality -- Benchmarks -- 4G Speed!!

The Epic 4G Touch, "May very well be ... the very best Android phone you can buy...."

How about the best phone. Period.

But what about call quality ??????

Bob already replied to me and said that the "Epic 4G Touch has good call quality, typical of the first series of Samsung Galaxy S phones. The audio is clear and has good volume... I'd say that it's better than average."

Oddly enough, he didn't use call quality as a segment in his smachdown. This would have been another win for Samsung because he complained about the call quality of the Droid as "sounding like marbles in our mouths" in a conversation with his wife.

Very detailed review. These are the folks in ny who always have problems with sprint 4g and call quality. Call quality came in pretty decent in this review (relative to other sprint phones).

Check this out

"We did like, though, that we didn't need to manually connect to a 4G network; the Epic 4G Touch automatically connected when using data, and shuts off 4G when the connection isn't needed. The notification icon changed to "Zzz" when it's idle."

Wow. That may just be the saving grace that makes me put in my order tonight. I'm highly curious what this would mean for push email from gmail. Anyone got an idea?
