I would have done the HTCDev method, but I'm worried the SDK Manager installed incorrectly as I was getting a few "cannot access" errors during the install process... don't want to use that method if the pre-requirements are installed questionably
I thought this was going to be simple... all I had to do was download a few files, move some stuff around, and enter a few commands... so much for that!

Yes, it is. If adb recognizes your device, then the tacoroot commands should work.
Start with the --undo command, since the phone might be confused at this point, and then reboot the device into recovery again (did you ever do this?) from the bootloader. Confirm you're still "LOCKED" with the 2.18 HBOOT on the way there. Once you get into stock recovery, press both volume buttons and the power button at the same time to bring up the menu, and then choose the option to reboot. At that point, let's try it from the beginning again.
If you never booted into the stock recovery, then that's why this isn't working. That's the first thing you have to do, since that's how this exploit works. Hopefully this will get you working.

ok got a little further along now
--setup and --root but did what they should with no issues... now after going into adb shell and getting the #... I entered
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
and got
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
/sdcard/flash_image: no such file or directory
I know the flash_image.zip is on the root of my sd card, so thats not the problem...

It's not that bad - the problem right now is that we have to get the instructions completed. Right now they're still WIP - but as we work through this with you, I'm sure we'll be able to update them to make them easier to understand (and more thorough).

is that the problem why it's saying no such file or directory?
there is no root folder within the Android folder... im confused...
the flash_image.zip file is right in sdcard (not in a folder), so I know that's not the issue
I feel like I'm soooooooooooo close, and this looks like a simple solution, so quick feedback would be appreciated... if I can get this, the rest should work and I should be home free

That folder is just where I had the adb file. You need to run the commands from wherever you have adb on your local drive. Also, the flash_image file needs to be extracted from the zip file, as does the mtd-eng.img.

And before you run the adb commands, the phone has to be connected in Charge only mode.

In the initial instructions it says to put the two files into the sd card... never says anything about extracting them... do I just need the extracted files in the root of the sdcard?

It worked! now at 2.10 instead of 2.18!
at what point do you --undo the tacoroot? now that it's2.10 I can do it? not in the directions here, but mentioned on that link?

Do the --undo command after completing the last adb command for flashing the misc downgrade.

Maybe you need to re-download the file from the email? It sounds like something is wrong with the file.

Hey I have a question i am VERY new to these phones and I'm trying to get all of these crappy EXTRA apps that came on the phone off of it like NASCAR or AMAZON etc... How can I do a noob root so nothing changes on my phone i just want to delete those apps and maybe learn how to do some more cool stuff on it. Thank You guys

ps: i had the .bin file in the folder on my desktop but not in same (copied) folder in my c: drive

do you have usb debugging turned on? and htc snyc is installed, correct?

unfortunately when you root now with any of the methods you will loose all data. if you have gingerbread 2.3.5 then this guide is the only way to root your phone. if you did not accept the latest ota and you have gingerbread 2.3.3 then you can use revolutionary which does not wipe your phone and you should be ok.
either way you will still need to back up your phone. i would use something like myback up pro. and make sure that all your contacts are synced with google and not your phone. you will loose those contacts otherwise.
and i would do the HTCdev method. it is the easiest way to go if you have gingerbread 2.3.5

Am I supposed to access the sd card from recovery mode? Also when I unzip that file I noticed in the system/bin folder there is a file just called su, is that what I am supposed to put on the phone? Just a little more clarification on this part would be greatly appreciated!

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
are you in recovery right now? if so you do not have to boot up connect the phone to the pc and in recovery select usb-ms toggle. this will give you access to your card.
do not unzip the su file. leave it zipped anuless told to do otherwise. most things that need to be flashed in recovery need to be in zipped format.
now you can move the su file over to the card and then go into recovery and flash it as per the guide.
i will see if i can explain that better in the guide so there is no confusion.

I have learned this much over the past 2weeks. The HTCDev method is super easy to do and the best if you are new to rooting. If you are out of warranty, then there is no cause for alarm if the bootloader becomes watermarked. I would suggest the MikG 3.0 ROM and Amon Ra 2.3 for your custom recovery. I have been using both in more than normal usage over the past 24 hours wit no issues whatsoever.
As for rooting with HTCDev, you won't have to worry about s-on or off. You can just follow the screen steps and boom, unlocked and ready to be loaded.
JUST A HEADS UP....you will lose all info on your phone when you do the initial flash to unlock your bootloader. Make sure you download an app backup program through the android market (my backup pro has gotten some good reviews) and be sure that your contacts are linked to your Google account and not on your phone. I know ocnbrze has been busy with a lot of people in the forum, so if you need assistance I can help you a bit. For major issues, see Ocnbrze....
Many thanks for the quick reply and the clarification! The problem I was having was that I could not get access to the sd card while in usb-ms toggle so I thought I was doing something wrong. I just booted up the phone and stuck it on while in windows explorer and now I am all rooted. Thanks!

Is there an unroot guide coming to get phones back to stock with HBOOT 2.18? or doesn't it matter for returns under service & repair what HBOOT you have?
the only way to full unroot is to root with either captain's method or tacoroot. once you have fully rooted with unrevoked then you can unroot using unrevoked forever.
and i'm not sure how sprint is handling repairs now days with the evo being eol.
