Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

you can't do it that way. The phone needs to be in fastboot. And you need the recovery.img in the android folder. You need to enter the fastboot command. The directions are in the guide.

Also I should specify that I'm using the Tacoroot method... Only other issue I have had is that when I'm in the cmd entering the cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
I get this
/sdcard/flash_image/: no such file or directory

however it does let me move past this into the next commands, I did a little more digging and found that when extracting files from the flash_image, it wont let me transfer to the SD card...

I am a newb still when it comes to this, so be kind :P lol

Also have tried just placing the flash_image.zip onto the SD card with no luck... The only issue other then the last step that I'm running into and may be causing my issues is the:

"12. ok you should get # in the command window if not then something went wrong. if you do get # then type:

Code:
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image"
Then after entering that getting the: /sdcard/flash_image/: no such file or directory
message...

All I want for now is the tethering from my sprint account to my iPad2.
I want to stay stock for now till I can get the hang on all this flashing, Is that the best way to go for me? like I said I just want the tethering for now. Thanks for a great forum.

So I been trying the stay on stock way tonight
I download the file Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed I keep it zip and rename it by adding .zip at the end ( when you download the file it show name as Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed ) new name is Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip I add the file unzip to my card root (no folder) power down then hold power and volume I go to recovery but I don’t get a select flash zip from sdcard as in step 3 ? any ideas. All it do’s is 2 green rounded arrow then after a few mins it changes to red triange, I take battery out and it boots back fine, am I doing something wrong? I do have fastboot unabled tried both with the check and without the check even tried check and unchecking the Unknown sources in settings, Please help.

did you place the files on the card. they need to be there in order for that command to work. what issue are you having putting it on the card? this file should have been put on the card way in the beginning.

edit:i almost forgot to mention WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok first off you do not rename the su file and leave it zipped. and sounds like you did not do the part wher you install amon ra2.3 recovery. you will need that to flash the su file. the instructions are in the guide for it.

Thanks OCN your right I got excited and forgot a step I did as you said it did its thing, then before I rebooted I made a backup of everything what will the file name be on my sdcard?

ok the nandroid backup you did is found in the nandroid folder on your sd card. within that folder is another one called HT......(it may vary from phone to phone) inside that will be the actually nandroid backup and it is usually named something like bds-02272012 for example. it is usually the date. you can rename this file if you want so that you know what it is. i usually add the name of the rom. just make sure that you do not add any spaces or weird symbols.

and the definition of being rooted is slightly different now. it used to be that one of the conditions was to have s-off. but now with the bootloader being locked it is slightly different. as long as you have the bootloader unlocked and have a custom recovery and either have the su flashed or flash a rom that has su cooked in, you are basically rooted. and as long as you have a custom recovery you can flash away like anybody else. the only difference is that you have s-on with a watermark.

ONCBRZE big thanks.
I just tether my iPad2 works great, thanks maybe Ill try other roms, as I read and learn more.
One more ? now any good roms tethering?

Sounds like you have the phone connected in Disk Drive mode, rather than Charge only?

Please Help.

Helping my friend with rooting his HTC EVO 4G. I'm using rooted HTC EVO 3D. Followed all of the steps to a T, and everything has moved along well. When I place the PC36IMG.zip in the root of the SD card and boot into the HBOOT menu it seems to load up fine then I get a;

Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No

I've read through previous threads and seen others having issues, but have not seen anyone with this exact issue, thanks in advance!

im having the same problem.. im doing the tacoroot method and did EVERYTHING it told me to do.. i didnt have any problems until now. idk why im getting this.. i thought i did everything right?

do i have to the htcdev method and then tacoroot? cause i didnt do the htcdev method at all and went straight to the taco root. i didnt wanna waste time signing up to their site lol

sd checking....
loading.. [PC36DIAG.zip]
no image!!
loading.. [PC36DIAG.ZIP]
no image or wrong image!
loading [PC36IMG.ZIP]

in the right hand corner a blue bar loads up and then i get

checking [PC36IMG.zip]

about ten seconds later i finally get

ok so something is not right, obviously. and are you sure that everything went correctly? did the command output with what is shown in the guide? it needs to be exactly the same output.

you might need to do taco root again and re-update the misc partition again.

yes.. everything went exactly how i saw it..even the "your phone should now reboot again. now some people have reported that when entering this command an error occurs, "adb not found". if this is the case then close the command window then press and hold shift and right click on the android folder you created earlier. select the open command window here option. the above command should now work."

everything went perfect.. ill just start over i guess

edit: the android folder created on desktop.. am i suppose to move it to the sd card? its been on the desktop the whole time while doing this whole process

no the android folder needs to be on the computer. you need it there so that you can run adb commands on your computer. the only thing that needs to go on the card would be the mtd and flash image files, and the PC36IMG file. everything else needs to be in that folder.

i started over and when i got to the part to put in the 1st code i got a message in the command prompt saying "adb is out of date... killing" then said daemon successfully something..i think ima call it quits.. i dont wanna mess up my phone. guess ima just have to keep my 4g stock :(

if daemon started succesfully you are ok.

and no need to stay on stock. try the HTCdev method. it is very simple to do really. you will be fully rooted though you will have s-on with a watermark. you can still do everything like any other rooted phone. but that is up to you.

i just finished with the htc dev method and now im going straight to captain throwback.. hope this works lol

im now stuck captain throwback method part 8.

"8) If "$" appears, you do not have root access. Type "su" to access root. "$" should change to a "#".
NOTE: If it doesn't change (though I don't know why it wouldn't), go to Market (signing into Google will be required), and download "Root Checker". Open Root Checker, and you should be prompted to allow root access. If successful, type "su" at the adb prompt again, and you should have root."

the $ did appear and when i put su i got this..
$ su
su
reloc_library[1312]: 1789 cannot locate '_ZNK7android6Parcel15setDataPositionEj
'...
CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE
$

so i signed into google and downloaded the root checker as it said.. when i clicked on verify root access it said sorry, this device does not have proper root access.. any ideas whats going on?

did you install a custom recovery? did you flash the su file? you need to flash the su file in order to get root access.
