If you select "automatic" you'll be allowing the system to find the strongest signal (generally). "Home only" or the name of the carrier as the selection restricts which towers are seen by the device as you roam.

If you roam a lot you'll lose signal keeping it on "home only."

If you don't roam much or at all, having it on that selection will disallow some of the tower polling, so yes, battery life will be better.

That's why the choices are there for you; it's a way for you to slightly customize the way your phone behaves depending on your individual needs.

Wish there was more questions like this instead of 4 different posts at one time about the PRL.

Never thought about there being a difference between the two until now.
