Wow! BIG UPDATE (I HOPE)!
I just now (5:20pm) received a phone call from Mr. Brian Szeto from the office of the president of Rogers in response to my email sent to the email address of Mr. Nadir Mohamed on Dec 12. (You can see it here:
http://androidforums.com/rogers/10647-rogers-dream-1-6-update-7.html#post177970).
He called to tell me that they were beginning an investigation into the whole issue, and that he would call me back hopefully by Thursday. He also gave me his phone number, in case I wanted to call him. he asked that I NOT publish that phone number online, and that apparently he has asked the same thing of one of the other members of this forum who emailed Mr. Mohamed's email address (I know a few of us did). I agreed not to publish the phone number, but said I would be telling you all of the conversation.
Before letting him go, I talked to him for about 5 minutes or so. I said i wanted to make it very clear to him what the problem was. I explained that we want the 1.6 update, that we KNOW it works on the HTC Magic and Dream. We would like 2.0, but we are aware that 2.0 might be somewhat problematic for these phones, but at least we NEED to have 1.6.
I said that while I had not spoken directly with Simon, it was reported i the forum that Simon had seemed confused about exactly how the updates work (and that this confusion seemed to be spread throughout Rogers). I explained very clearly that these phones are not like the old dumb phones, that they are really little computers that need to be updated like a Windows computer to be able to run the latest software. I pointed out that there are NOW apps in the Market Place that can not be used on our phones because we are stuck on 1.5.
I also made it clear that, despite what Simon _might_ have said, that we _don't_ want this update so we can "hack" our phones. I explained that we can hack our phones right now, if we wanted to, and that we want this update so that we DON'T have to hack them, so we can stay within our warranty.
I pointed out not only that they have 2.0 on phones now in the US, but that we were aware that _Telus_ would be carrying the Motorola Milestone with 2.0 in the new year, and that we had spoken to Wind mobile and that we knew that they would at some point be carrying Android phones.
He was very polite and professional, and promised to call me back.
If they were ignoring us, they wouldn't have bothered to call me. I think we are actually being heard there. I believe they are most likely watching this forum thread, as well as the new blog, the FB group, the petition, the Twitter tweets, and they know we are reaching out to the media.
It is very important now that we be very careful not to say anything that is untrue, that we show a little patience now, but maintain our willingness to be a thorn in their side if they continue to string us along or refuse to support our phones. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that he competition from Telus, Bell, and Wind is/are coming!
