Rogers Update: 911 Fix for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic is Ready

RE: fine print you have mentioned - I'm FIDO, so Rogers fine print does not concern me.
Fine.....here are the applicable FIDO T&C's

I have a friend with a Rooted Magic and his Data is working but when he goes online it does not show that he has a Magic on his account still shows his old phone... likely the reason his it still working.

he is with Fido.. but Fido is owned by Rogers and Fido for the most part uses Rogers cell network.

That is all true.

My bitching is about Rogers denying data access to people who they "don't deal with".

Just call Rogers support and when asked what your phone number is tell them you are Fido customer.

Post back here what they tell you :).

The service that is not theirs that is . It's Fido's service. They make it very clear whenever you call them!

That sux's!!! ya your kinda out of luck untill you can reach someone high up at Fido that understands what your talking about... me and you know whats going on but no CSR on the phone likely does...

Are you Fido too? Have you been disconnected?

See, the problem is that Fido knows NOTHING about this. At least the Sunday morning crew...

4826: Rogers/Fido Safety Message...

I know what you are going to say now....
Thats an odd one. Despite that FIDO is owned by Rogers and they share infrastructure they are two separate companies and should be operated as such. Agreed that you're not going to get anywhere from Rogers customer or technical service. They shouldn't even have access to your account profile so no way for them to even investigate any issues. That said, if you're getting no answers from FIDO you have a right to be pissed off but be pissed off for the right reasons. Simply going on a tear isn't going to resolve anything.

That could be the case. If it is then there's nothing nefarious like Rogers looking at the IMEI's and blocking devices, rather just making the change based on billing profile.

I'm patiently waiting on hold with Rogers. True I don't have a phone number but I still have IMEI to give them.

My words may have been a bit too harsh, but I believe that I should be pissed of with Rogers not Fido. It was Rogers who f*^* me up after all.
And to my defense, I was very courteous towards the lady at Fido support and at the end I told her that I understand that it is not her fault nor likely Fido's fault and told her that I appreciate her trying.
What I don't appreciate is Rogers poking their dirty nose to matters not their own.

LOL, this is weird.

Just looked at my profile online and they show me as having the HTC Dream. I received my magic on wednesday and have been using it ever since. Did the update to it on friday but as previously mentioned my dream is still running the cyanogen ROM. Data/GPS/phone are working on both.

I too am with Fido... and like you, I have no internet access on my magic. Hopefully the data will be re-instated tomorrow.... thats what the text message said (within 24 hours of completing the update). So I'm seriously hoping they do because I can definitely forsee trouble because I know fido will give the whole speech about how they don't support smart phones they don't sell.

Please do update with what Rogers and/or Fido says regarding this matter....

Thanks

Got off the phone with Rogers support. Here I paraphrase the discussion.

I was asked for the phone number. Explained to the guy that I don't have one but would appreciate if he heard me out.

me: Are you aware of the update Rogers is forcing on all Dream and Magic users?
him: Yes.
me: And you know that whoever doesn't comply will be disconnected from data.
him: Yes. By LAW Rogers is required to provide ALL devices with 911 enabled. We know that ALL of our Dreams and Magics shipped were 1.5 and so without 911 capability. So, by the same LAW we are required to ensure that ALL of them are 911 capable.
me: Well, I'm running 1.6 and can assure you 911 works.
him: I understand that those of you who rooted have this bug fixed [mySideNote: kudos to him!], but we (Rogers) can't tell who is running what, so unless you apply the upgrade we must deny you the service.
me: Well, what if I come to the store and demonstrate that I can dial 911?
him: Sorry, it's so high in the system that we can't just change it for you here on our PC. You will have to downgrade your 1.6, apply the update and then you can try to root again if you wish.
me: If I brick during the process, will Rogers replace the phone?
him: Nope, you already voided your warranty by rooting at the first place!
me: What if I put my SIM to my old Nokia phone?
him: Sorry, you have been marked. Your account will NOT be able to get data plan unless you apply the update.
me: I just lost my Dream and can't apply my update. What now?
him: Hmmm, I don't know. You need to talk to Fido..
me: Ok, so how come there are people that do have Dream, rooted, running 1.6 and still have data plan?
him: What? Who? How?
me: Yep, there are some reporting it.
him: I don't know. All I know is that the system higher up has been programmed to not allow dreams and magics without the update applied.

So there you have it. We are Royally ****ed!

.....So there you have it. We are Royally ****ed!

yeah, about that...

I'm back in!!!

I called(landline), did NOT pick a phone, went to general tech(no wait) said vaguely "I was having some intermittent data issues and some forums said to call up and request a network refresh", he (very eagerly) said sure! turned off the phone, he refreshed, and I'm back.

He proceeded while booting to ask about what specific issues but I kept it vague, text issues, on/off data (i did not get asked about the update!)

If my data goes out in an hour like it seemed in the start, then Rogers is sweeping users in which case, turn your phone off until the whole ordeal is done to avoid being marked again, or risk calling for another refresh,(I'm sure they will catch on soon, but those outsourced peeps LOVE the easy calls!)

I prefer the nice method, instead of the death threats to the managers

if they ask about the update say "I did and i had intermittent issues some forums said... blahblah. Voila no root reveal!

enjoy your data(and the free month of data!)

him: I understand that those of you who rooted have this bug fixed, but we (Rogers) can't tell who is running what, so unless you apply the upgrade we must deny you the service.
That's kind of interesting. If they can't tell who is running what, how do they know that people applied the upgrade? Does this also imply that the Dream specifically, though apparently EOL as far as Rogers is concerned, can be capable of OTA updates?

him: I understand that those of you who rooted have this bug fixed [mySideNote: kudos to him!], but we (Rogers) can't tell who is running what, so unless you apply the upgrade we must deny you the service.

Hmm am I the only one that sees the issue here? We can't tell who is running what but if you upgrade you get the service back....

They can tell what you are running, it comes of the IP information, if there was not another reason for the forced upgrade they could easily program their system to block the specific version of the OS that has the issue.

I am with Fido, I have enom's 1.6 AOSP ROM and I do not have data. If I do not have data by tomorrow I'm going to throw my SIM in my G1 and try that out. If I still don't have data I'm going to tell Fido to kiss my ass and I'm going to Bell or Telus.

There is something fishy here, the technology is available, they are using it to block the phones, they are just not doing it the right way.
