Root Rolled back to Android 1.5 - now totally stuck there!

Hi there, I really hope someone can help me and I do apologise if this is the wrong thread, or if the answer's elsewhere. I've spent ages looking for the answer to this problem but I just can't find it!

I have an HTC Hero (not the Sprint version) on the Orange nework. I've had it for nearly two years and have done the usual upgrades, so I eventually ended up on Android 2.1, as you'd expect. I did everything by the book.

Anyway, a few weeks ago a guy at my work said he would root the phone for me. Stupidly I said oh yes please, go ahead. Baaaad move! He messed it up well and proper.

So I did a factory reset today, but various things were still screwy. Then I went onto the official HTC website and installed the old Android 1.5, thinking I could just get it updated again easily back to Android 2.1, and I'd be back where I was before the guy at work messed around with things.

Wrong! I didn't realise there wasn't an option in the settings of Android 1.5 for searching for available upgrades! So. Much to my disappointment, it now appears as though I have an HTC Hero running Android 1.5 exactly like it was when I bought the phone back in 2009.

I can't download ANYTHING from the Market now - it keeps saying "download unsuccessful" so I don't know how to get an app which will unroot the phone and let me somehow get Android 2.1 back on it.

What I'm wondering is ... Am I stuck in a timewarp on Android 1.5 for ever???

Could someone please, please advise me how to get Android 2.1 back on my phone? I've never really done anything with rooting etc so I am absolutely NOT tech-savvy. But I'd be ever so grateful if anyone could help me please!

Many thanks
Croila

What happens if you go to the dialler, type in *#*#2432546#*#* and dial it?

Also, what was the build number of the rom you installed? (You can find it under Settings >> About Phone.

First of all, welcome to Android Forums! :)

Secondly, no need to panic.... we'll sort this out. Was the handset obtained via Orange i.e. branded & network-locked? Also what build number is displayed in Settings/About phone?

edit: semi-ninja'd by Xyro (yet again!) I've got an excuse though.... I'm in the middle of updating my DZ. :p

Hi there, thank you for your reply :)

Okay, I tried to dial that number but by the time I entered the last *, nothing happened and my list of contacts just came up.

The build number of the ROM, though, it says:
2.73.405.5 146733 CL#61267 release keys
software version 1.0.0.A6288
firmware version 1.5

Oh boy I really wish I hadn't tinkered with this. I should never have fiddled with things I don't understand! :(

Slug, thank you ... I've been lurking here for quite a while before registering, just getting various bits of advice over the last year or so, and I'm totally blown away by how helpful people are!

I got the handset at the Carphone Warehouse but it was on the Orange network. So I don't THINK it was 100% "Orangified" if that makes sense? I'm not sure if it's network locked though as I've never tried any other SIM in it.

PS: Slug ... Just noticed you're in Inverness. I'm from Inverness-shire, nearly 40 miles south of you ;)

I got the handset at the Carphone Warehouse but it was on the Orange network.

CPW only flog unlocked generic handsets, which matches the build number info, so no problem there.

Download this update and run the program with your handset connected via USB. It will wipe all data so backup anything important in the internal storage beforehand. After the update your build number should be 2.73.405.66, and you'll now have the "Check for updates" option in Settings/About phone. Hook up to wifi and update away - at the end of it all you should be updated to the latest 2.1-update1 level.

From here you can easily root the handset by following my walkthrough here.

Hold on.... I thought that username looked familiar. Newtonmore area, right? My sister lives there - it's a small world. :D

Slug, thank you SO much for you advice - it totally worked, you are a star and I'm so grateful! I have never been so glad to get anything fixed I tell you. You've saved my sanity! I really appreciate your help.

Next stop is to attempt rooting properly and not breaking it again *gulp*

By the way it's not quite Newtonmore but not far off it ... ;)
