Root [ROM] Bugless Beast V0.2.1 Android 2.2 FRF57

Thanks...glad I used 1, not trusting the install location decision to anyone but me. ;)

When you use 0, how does the phone make it's "automatic" decision?

I'm guessing if the app is designed to have a "preferred installation location" on the external memory, then automatic will put the app on the external. And viceverse.

For all those that want to install this rom and are either scared off by other's issues, or are having trouble with missing widgets, apps, etc., I will let you know step by step how I installed this rom and have been running it all night with no issues.

1) Downloaded FRF57V021.zip to my PC.

2) Followed GirLuvsDroid instructions on changing apps2sd install location to the phone as seen here:

What you need to do is download 7Zip (free) and Notepad++ (because Notepad inserts characters that will screw things up). Don't extract the zip file -- right click on it and click on 7Zip, then "Open archive." Then navigate to /system/etc/ and drag the the install-recovery.sh file to your desktop. Right click on the file and select "Edit with Notepad++." Scroll down to the very last line and change "2" to "1" then close Notepad++ and drag the file back to the 7Zip directory you took it out of. When it asks if you're sure you want to copy that file (or something to that effect), click "Yes." Then you can close the 7Zip file and you're done.

3) Placed rom on my sdcard after the above was completed.

4) Flashed rom via Rom Manager. (I wiped)

5) Logged into my Google account. (I did this once I went to the market and it had me log in.)

6) Went into Settings>Location & security> and checked "Use wireless networks". (Again, thank you GirLuvsDroid) **If you don't do this and install Beautiful Widgets, it constantly keeps GPS on no matter what settings you have selected. I installed my apps prior to checking "Use wireless networks" and found Beautiful Widgets to be the culprit. I uninstalled BW after checking "Use wireless networks", then reinstalled and all is well. Save yourself some trouble and just check it right away.**

7) Downloaded Titanium Backup and restored all my apps, no data. (Apps will now go to your phone's storage, not sdcard. You can move them later as you see fit.)

8) I set up my phone, ran some of Pete's scripts, deleted the stock launcher (I use LauncherPro), let it sit for a bit, then made a backup.

9) Grabbed one of P3's kernels from here: P3Droid Kernels

10) Flashed the kernel via Rom Manager.

I am now running BB v0.2.1 with a LV P3 kernel @ 1gHz with all apps stored on my phone and have had no issues or reboots. I can now move apps to my sdcard freely as I see fit. I did not get rid of the shutdown/reboot/recovery script as I don't have a problem with that. If you do not like this feature and would like to disable them, delete /system/bin/shutdown. My phone has been running perfectly, and I have rebooted a few times to ensure widgets and apps appear properly. I would stay away from placing apps that have widgets that you use on your sdcard. I haven't tried this as I have plenty of room, so I don't know if that will mess widgets up. I put games and other apps that I don't use as often on my sdcard. This post isn't directed at everyone, just people who are wary of this rom as it seems to be getting a bad rap. I blew off this rom at first after issues, and went back to Fab's rom. After reading everyones (read: GirLuvsDroid) helpful hints, I tried again using the above steps and realized that this is a really nice rom! No, Pete isn't off his game or anything, he is putting out amazing work. You just need to take your time with this rom to get it the way you want, vice his earlier roms where you just installed them and off you go. Ok, I'm done writing this novel. Hopefully this helps some newer folks out there. I know all you experienced ones out there got it down pat, but this worked for me, and hopefully it works for them.

Nick, thanks for taking the time to put together this nice step-by-step guide (and thanks for the kudos, too!). I would just add that, although the P3 kernels seem to work well for Nick, they don't work for everyone. There's an array of other Froyo kernels you can try here: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/98988-froyo-kernels.html.

I recommend that you download several different kernels to try, in case you're sent into a bootloop because your Droid didn't agree with your kernel choice.

Is the Genie (news/weather) widget working for you? If so, I'll give this another shot, if not I'll wait for the next release. Either way, thanks for putting this guide up, it's very well written and easy to follow!

Girlluvsdroid / nicks88: is there a way for u to post the finished product after the file has been edited and put back into the zip? Thanks in advance...

Titaniac, are you asking for the edited ROM zip file (FRF57021.zip, as edited to ensure apps install to the phone)?

Nice write up - second GLD's comment about kernels...best to have a few (Chevy/P3/jdlfg that you can try (mix of ULV/LV/MV) to see which is best for your Droid.

So Nick, when you go to Market>Downloads, are all your apps (free and paid) that you restored installed listed as installed?

One issue others some (not sure what %) have been seeing w/these new BB Froyo ROMs when wiping data/cache before installing is that their apps don't reinstall/don't appear in their download section...curious how you ended up.

Also curious, if you didn't have market>download links did you try Titanium's Market Doctor to resolve?

Thanks, I'll try that later. I just noticed that my google email wasn't showing up either and my contacts aren't in my phone (even though the favorites are) anywhere but I'm sure that's because I can't use my google email account

So here's a new issue.... not sure if it's related to Pete's ROM or not.

When I take pictures, they don't save correctly. I browsed the SD Card and I can find the files, but I can't open them. Irfanview gives me a file error. I also can't see them in the Gallery. Pictures that I took on previous ROMs are all still there and work fine.

Other than that, the ROM seems OK. The frequent reboots have stopped with V0.2.1 and things seem to be working well. I haven't changed the kernal or made any modifications.

I've neen running BB v.2 unthemed for a few days now, and just found an issue...wondering if it's a just-me, and if it affects v.2.1 as well.

Voice search isn't working...press voice search button, tap microphone icon, speak when voice prompt dialog appears...nothing happens. No text appears in search field.

Anyone on this ROM as well?

The only change I've made is adding Chevy's LV 1.0GHz kernel yesterday...unfortunately I didn't try voice search before making that change, so can't tell if the kernel swap is related at all.

Can you guys post if voice search works, and what kernel you're using, stock or not?

It doesn't work for me either. It force closes unexpectadly

Also task killer doesn't seem to be killing anything even though it says apps are killed and memory is freed up. I close BLOO, but keep getting notifications.

This is my first time rooting and my second ROM. I only had 2.1 for a matter of minutes though, but my contacts did come through and it was working. While it's nice that everything seems to be a lot faster, I'm failing to see the point if nothing works properly. Perhaps it was user error. All I did was use ROM manager to install it thinking it would be seamless. I didn't wipe, however.

I'll go back and try Nick's method, however when you say you flashed a kernal does it matter which one you pick?

Is there any way to remove the percentage from the battery icon? Or, what file would one need to edit to remove it?

Getting random reboots coming out of sleep sometimes. Help? 1200/400 kernal atm, P3's.

This happened a lot to me as well and it cleared out my widgets. I had to reinstall the programs to get the widgets back.

It started happening so routinely that I gave up and went back to 2.1 until this is solid.

IS anyone else having a problem with LauncherPro in this ROM.

Once I reboot it goes back to the standard home launcher. when I hit the home button a can select launcherPRO. when it switches to launcherpro all of my widgets will say problem loading widget" I had this same problem with .2

Edit: flashed back to .1 this just seems too buggy

The Genie widget is working. I was down yesterday and last night for a while. I even looked at my 'accounts & sync' and saw that google was having issues. It said something along the lines of 'Google is experiencing sync issues, it will be back shortly'. Something like that. But anyways, it is back up now.

All my market download links were there after I restored from Titanium Backup. I used market doctor as well, but it didn't do anything. All my apps appear in the market. BUT!!!! I have noticed that sometimes my update/downloads get hung up at 100% and just stall or disappear. I would just cancel and start again to fix. Other than that wierdness (which can get annoying), no other market problems. Updates show up and all.

My voice search works, both by long pressing the soft key, and by your method. Now, I have tried it and received a connection error, but that is due to Juice Defender not establishing a data connection yet.

Yes, please. I don't have access to a computer right now. I appreciate all the support, guys (and girls).

Each droid will act differently with different Kernels. It's magic. I suggest try loading up the rom like how I did, set it up, and make a backup before trying diff kernels. That way you can try many kernels to find one that likes your phone. If anything screws up, you always will have your backup.

If you really want to try out this rom, try installing it how I did. When I first installed it, I was having the same issues. LauncherPro wasn't showing up as default, widgets messed up, apps not showing up....etc. This was ALL due to all my apps being restored to my sdcard instead of phone when I flashed this rom. If you use the way I did it, all apps will be on your phone by default, widgets will work, and you can move whatever apps you want to sdcard. Don't give up!

Thanks. Do i have to do a nandroid backup all the time or will titanium backup suffice? How often should I do a nandroid backup?
