Root ROM compatibility question

What I mean is, can I go into the root section of another phone in the forums here and download a ROM and flash it? Preferably with little or no altering of the ROM zip file. If so which phones?

No, you can't. A ROM has to be ported, as was mentioned above, in order to work on our device. If you actually were able to flash another device's ROM on your EVO, you'd likely end up with a fancy paperweight.

If you go under the root for dummys and go to roms and click show at the bottom there is a section for ported roms for our evo, For example Xplode is a sony errickson port.

Ok the sticky page has changed a little Here is the link http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html Scroll down to ports and click show. There are the roms ported from other phones for the evo 4g. Never flash something for another phone you never know what will happen,

Yeah, the ports are some of my favorite ROMs. I was just curious if there were any that didn't need to be ported, that kinda stinks that there aren't any. I'm glad now that I didn't just blindly flash another phone's ROM. Bricking my phone is a giant fear of mine.

It's pretty difficult to brick the phone but flashing another rom not made for the Evo 4G is definitely one of them:eek:

Flashing an incompatible rom is asking for trouble...unless its a tested port...unless you are a developer and want to test the effects..and, of course, have a spare device

Well the HTC Incredible as seen >here< has a VERY similar system to that of the EVO, so if you really liked something you saw over there you could always run one of those ROMs the dsixda's kitchen and port it to your EVO with little trouble. :)

Ooh! I might have to give that a shot. Though if I'm going to get into this kind of stuff I might buy another Evo from Ebay. The ones with a bad esn are cheap, but I don't need to get it turned on so that would work for me.
