Root [ROM][DEV]Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview

ortrigger

Android Expert
Just saw an article on XDA about porting this. There is a guide here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting

Apparently, it is ubuntu running through a CM10.1 core via chroot. It looks interesting. I may try my hand at porting it but no guarantees.

Any updates to the device trees and the kernel source can be tracked on github: https://github.com/ubuntu-touch-for-spectrum

Update:

2/27/13: I got the cm10.1 base to build successfully today. It is untested though and may or may not work.

2/28/13: It boots up finally!

Wipe system/factory reset, cache, and dalvik cache. Flash the i_vzw_ubuntu.zip file first then the phablet zip. It will take a few minutes so don't get too worried. After everything is done flashing, reboot and you should get the Ubuntu Touch lock screen.

WARNING: This is a developer preview. Radios are non-functional, wifi is, as of yet, untested. This is not meant to be a daily driver by any means. It is strictly a preview of what Ubuntu has envisioned for this project. Neither I nor death2all110, therefore, may be held responsible for anything you do to your own device including, but not limited to: bricks, fires, natural disasters, nuclear war, or being late to work because your alarm didn't go off.

Other bugs: screen doesn't turn off; brightness doesn't change [will hopefully be fixed soon]; more?

Update: 2013/03/09 uploaded a new version that potentially fixes screen issues.

Do it! I would love to see it in action....of course....my question is....will there be all new mobile apps for ubuntu or will the android apps run with it

It will have it's own apps. As far as seeing it in actions, I threw it on my gnex for a little while yesterday and it looks promising. It is a developer preview though so don't expect a whole lot from it yet. I don't know if the radios will be functional. They weren't on my GNex but it was a port of the maguro build. We'll see what happens.

Nice!!!! From what I have seen its pretty kewl....I have also seen Ubuntu running on tabs tho as well...albeit not as fast or smooth as android but running nonetheless

I'm setting up the build environment right now. As soon as it's done, I have to download the source. Will probably have everything ready to attempt a build in the next day or so.

Edit: I'm also working on a slimmed version of cm10.1 which will also (hopefully) come with a modded kernel.

Il help in any way, been busy lately but il throw down for Ubuntu.

Waitn for the Kindle Fire port by Hash.

It be nice to show the Android folk here theres something else out there thats similar by code but different by OS

Yup! Love me some Linux

Just a quick update. I finally got the source to start syncing. I'm not sure why it was having issues the last couple of days but it seems to be doing fine now. I have a few hours tomorrow during which I can work on getting it to boot on the Spectrum so expect more updates over the next couple of days.

Holy build errors, Batman!

I just attempted to build and got errors everywhere. I will have to look into it and see what more I can do. I'm afraid this may soon be more difficult than my beginner skills can handle. :(

Don't worry, I won't. Progress may not happen as fast as I would like though. I have mid-terms coming up next week and the Cisco networking curriculum is pretty unforgiving.

cisco networking is horrible.. i took the class but never took the test to get certified....

Here's another update: I figured out that one of my problems is that my kernel directory had some old stuff in it that was breaking the build. Ran the 'make mrproper' command and that appears to be taken care of. I'm running a build right now so we will see how it goes.

EDIT: The build succeeded. I haven't tested it yet though so no news on if it works or not. If I get time, I will try tonight but it's getting pretty late here and I have school in the morning.
