Root ROM failed to load and can't access SD card

I rooted my phone w/o problem.

Then I followed the instructions here
How To Install Android 2.3 Gingerbread on HTC Droid Eris - Tutorial

I took a backup and then loaded the new ROM. It had an error :(

Now I can't get the phone to even start. It display ANDROID for a while then blinks and then starts displaying ANDROID all over again.

I can also no longer get to my SD card.

So is my phone now a brick or is there any way to fix this?

Oh, good grief.

Sorry to say that Kaos Gingerbread is absolutely the worst GB ROM that you could have chosen, and Clockwork causes many problems for new rooters on the Eris. Anybody who recommends this does not know what they are talking about when it comes to the Eris, unfortunately.

Can you restart in Recovery by shutting down and then restarting while holding down VolDn (in other words, hold VolDn until you see the display light up.) Does this start Recovery for you?

There are some really good folks on here that will save your phone if it can be saved. Follow their instructions to the letter. Don't bounce around other forums or sites looking for answers. This isn't their first rodeo.;)

thank you and yes i can get it to come up in recovery mode. that's where i tried getting it to read the sd card and it won't.

So i can get back into recovery

In Recovery, can you go to the "mounts and storage" menu, and then "mount USB storage" while connected to your PC, and then have your PC access the SD card?

(Make sure that your battery is well-charged, by the way).

If so, download CondemnedSoul's CM7 ROM from here: [ROM] 7/12/11 Condemned CM7 V14 - xda-developers (the one that is vanilla is probably best.)

Please make sure that the file is downloaded completely! If you can check the MD5 hash of the file that you download, make sure that it matches what CS says it should be (dfae2869195e0e01a6cb3be4687defda). Copy this to the SD card. When the file copy is complete, safely remove the removable drive for your SD card from your PC and press the trackball to turn off USB mode. Then press the power button to go back to the main menu.

Do the "wipe data/factory reset"

Then "install zip from sdcard" and choose the CM7 file that you copied over earlier. Restart when that finishes. Let's hope that works.

I'm leaving on vacation for 10 days tomorrow, so hopefully some others will be watching this and can help you out ging forward, including showing you how to install Amon_RA recovery rather than using Clockwork.

Good luck!

when i boot in recovery mode my first menu is
fastboot
recovery
clear storage
simlock

Then under the recovery menu i have
reboot system now
usb-ms toggle
backup/restore
flash zip from sdcard
wipe partition sd card
other
power off

I've tried enabling the usb but my computer doesn't recoginize the phone. i have another phone and copy stuff to the sd card using that but i don't think that will help if my eris can't read the card :(

Yeah, you might just have a bad SD card, so if you can get/try a different one and put the ROM that doogald suggested on it and follow his instructions, you should be good-to-go.

We can address replacing your ClockworkMod recovery with Amon_RA after you get CM7 installed and are up and running.

I'm spotty on being able to check back in here during the day, but I'll be available this evening (as far as I know at the moment).

Good luck!

yeah! bad sd card. I tried my other one and now when I connect to my pc, I can see the phone's sd card.

but of course, i'm at work now and the damn folks have blocked the site so i can't download but i'm going to do that first thing tonight.

Thanks!

if we only hAd a nickel for everytime kaos froyo has effed someone up

hopefully your problem is not more serious due to the fact that you have used clockwork.

i will be watching :)

Sweet! Glad you are back up and running :).

According to this CyanogenMod-7.1.0-RC1 | CyanogenMod:

"This version is an update to Android 2.3.4, includes many new features, and brings support to several new devices."

So, its an enhancement and reformulation of Gingerbread, which is nice...;)

Cheers!

working fine except that it still can't play the darn loser game "fashion story". was playing it w/ my daughter. damn thing times out so much that what made me try to upgrade to gingerbread. well now the display doesn't work. of course, the app sux so nothing much lost there.

All of the well written apps work just fine.

I did however download new ADW themes and now the red smokey HTC background screen that was originally there is gone. I tried resetting adw defaults but that made no diff. is it somewhere on my phone and i just need to find it?

I don't know what is up w/ the theme maker folks but dang! those puppies are just too busy and difficult to read.

Here's the default wallpaper. Just save it somewhere on your SD Card. ;)

Glad to hear you're enjoying the ROM. What is this game you're having problems with? Maybe I can look into it for you.

Red HTC Wallpapaer

there's actually a whole series of these games. I tried another one and it doesn't work either.

https://market.android.com/search?q=fashion+story&so=1&c=apps

before i upgraded, the response time of the app was so bad, i kept getting that box about not responding and do you want to force close. It is like the apps spend so much time with the ppl running around the screen, that it doesn't respond to any action the user is trying to take including trying to get out of the app.

so i upgraded and now they won't display correctly at all. no people show up. none of the 'items' show up. it is like they have a base and then they were overlaying the base with items such as tables or dressing rooms etc depening on the app but only the base layer now shows.

Are you using WiFi or 3g? Also... Try opening settings>cm settings>performance and change the CPU max to 710 and min to 480 and see if that helps some.

the game requires wifi so i have no choice there. i tried the cpu settings and it made no diff to the display. i even bumped them up 1 more level and no diff to the display. I think there's something incompatible w/ what they are doing and this rom

It could also just be too much for the Eris. A lot of games are too much for the Eris. I'll look into it some though and see if I can find anything out on it. I'm working on some things to free up memory for my next update so maybe that will help. It could possibly be a memory relayed issue.

it wouldn't surprise me if it was too much for the phone. it was slow on my motorola droid as well. it's probably a real resource hog.

My main reason for upgrading the os was so that i could put apps on the sd card so i'm a happy camper now :)

Is there any way to copy an app from my old phone to my new phone w/o rooting the old phone? Some of the apps I had on my old phone are strangely no longer in the market.

Also, before i put on gingerbread, my phone had a neat widget where you could put contacts directly on a screen and have a default action like text. I'm assuming that was an HTC thing because I didn't have it on my droid. I found some apps in the market that were similar. I can't remember which one i ended up using but I think it was 1 of the first 2 of these
animated
contact widget
contapps

I thought I'd include this just in case anybody else asks. I actually like the one i'm using now better as the pictures are smaller and take up less space :)

I think that Astro File Manager has an app backup and restore option. MyBackup Pro or Sprite Backup I think will also backup and restore apps (though I think not the data, unless you are rooted.)
