Root [ROM][ICS] Paranoid Android Ver1.6 Beta from source (31JUL2013)

Is there an easy way to put the original kernel back? I'd been using the 4-17-13 build and it was pretty much working perfectly, but since I've installed the new kernel, I've had two lockups/reboots and it seems like the garbled text was happening more frequently. The touchscreen improvements were really nice, though.
I'm on the same as you.I've gotten quite a few reboots (like 3 or 4 randomly) but the garbled text I've only gotten once so far.I haven't had any lock ups.The touchscreen works so much better but it can lag at times. So I think we have confirmed that 1.This kernel helps for touchscreen and that 2. it's not the kernel that is causing the jumbled texts.

There are about ten different ways to replace the kernel you have. The best way may be to take the kernel (boot.img) from the ROM you loaded originally and move it to the kernel installer you loaded your current kernel with. I used WinRAR in Windows and the archiver that came with Ubuntu. Both have worked flawlessly for me.

If you aren't sure, holla back and we (the community) will help.
Thanks - I'd never bothered unzipped a ROM before. I didn't realize the kernel was so easily available.

Yeah, just to be technical, the boot.img is more than the kernel. It has stuff for the RAMDisk and whatnot. Sense the rest of the boot.img doesn't change much you can call it the kernel.

GREAT JOB Bsydz!! I played around with this earlier today and I love the interface :):):) I'll be installing tonight or tomorrow and giving this an earnest test drive.

On this ROM, is there any way to switch the background color of the Messaging app from the default white to a black background (see attached screenshots) like on CM7? Or is the only option to go with a third-party SMS/MMS app? Any suggestions would be appreciated as I find the white background a little hard on the eyes.

Thanks in advance.
Thanks, best bet is to search for inverted Gapps, you can just replace the mms.apk with the appropriate version. Dunno much about it, you may just have to dig around.
So I'm using the new kernel for the touch screen and it's working great. It's a little slow but it responds WAY better. Was moving the letters on words with friends with ease. Before I was having major issues that I would have to turn screen off then back on to fix it.Great work BSydz!

EDIT:BTW are you in Michigan BSydz?
Thanks, I am not sure if that is the exact same kernel source that I used for the ROM, so there may be a few glitches. My hard drive is so jumbled up right now that I loose track, I have like, I'm not exaggerating, 40 custom kernels for the Triumph.

Yeah, I live in MI.
I tried to install the v6 supercharger for the first time a couple days ago and It took like 10 minutes of answering questions in dos mode and it was very confusing. Then it asked if I wanted to manually add a component or automatically but it would only have full effect if it was added manually. I copied a couple files in which I thought it wanted and I couldn't open the keyboard to ok the install and accidentally closed out of it. I decided not to go through the 10 minutes of dos again and my phone is incredible slow now. I have to reboot it twice a day just to release the resources so its usable. I'm not sure if it's because I didn't finish it properly of if it's not compatible but it was very confusing and if you do it wrong you will ruin the rom.
I can't help you with that, I'm sorry. I have never ran the V6 script before.
That option is available with this ROM as well I believe, but the font is so small it's kinda useless.

It was worth a shot, I just like to know what makes my phone seem to be laggy at times (every once in a while) and it would be nice to see that its working or not. No big deal.

I also have an issue where my phone gets super laggy, pretty much frozen. It's usually when I turn the screen on, although happens very rarely.
Yeah seems to be a bit laggy, but the Build is a tester, so hopefully soon it will all get worked out.
I installed this yesterday and have been running it for about 24 hours now with only a couple issues. The first is that twice within a couple hours of install I lost my 3G and went into Roaming in places where I normally have good coverage. Switching Airplane Mode on then back off did the trick the first time. The second time I didn't bother with Airplane Mode and just rebooted. Since then I have had no issues with the network, so I can't say if it was a problem with the ROM or VM's sometimes crappy coverage.

I also have a couple issues with the statusbar. I do like the style and appearance but I'm not crazy about having it on the bottom of the screen. When I set "Paranoid Settings >Statusbar style" to Phone UI it does display up top but in the "old" style. Is there any way to get the statusbar at the top of the screen while retaining the appearance and functionality it has in Tablet UI mode? Also, when set to Tablet UI mode, the AM/PM indicator does not display at all. When set to Small there's a little blank space next to the time where the AM/PM should be, and when set to Normal it doesn't display at all like when it's set to None. It's only a minor consideration, just something I got used to with my previous ROM.

Otherwise, this is a great ROM and I have had no stability issues at all so far. I don't take many videos with my phone so that's pretty much a non-issue for me but I love having a working camera AND ICS at the same time :) :) Keep up the good work, BSydz!
Thanks, signal should be good, I haven't had any issues.

I wish I knew how to do that, if I knew a lil more I might attempt it. I woulda fixed the gap at the bottom when the status bar is at the bottom if I could, but those are not my priority right now. Maybe in the future.

No worries, I know you are putting tons of hard work into this. It was more of me just reporting a possible bug than saying "Hey, I really need this fixed" :p:p

Anyway, awesome job! A little bit laggy at times but not so much to be a hassle. I think I've found my new "daily driver" ROM :D

Here's a boot logo I made a year ago in anticipation of a working camera ICS triumph rom.

Note it looks squeezed as forum only allows up to 750 pixels tall, so resize it to 800 tall

Ach! Driving to Chicago battery life was terrible using Maps. Then the phone just died! No response to charger, pulled battery and reinserted-nothing. Don't know if it's just the battery or the phone. It was getting pretty warm, had it plugged into the car charger but still could not keep up with the draw . Ended up powering down for an hour then restarting the phone. It lasted about an hour then completely dead.

Called VM no help. No place in Chicago seems to have a battery, so I guess I'm screwd. Great way to start a vacation, really need my phone around town...

If you want to post a picture that isn't cropped you can upload the pic to a site like dropbox or photobucket and use a URL to link it to the post as such:
Code:

I purposely changed the opening brace to a swirly brace because it would show the picture instead of the code.

AH HA I knew it!Well I was up there in April for Shuto Con in Lansing it was a BLAST!I might be moving up there.Anyways with the touch screen kernel I'm getting the freezing now so yeah.plus for touch screen minus for reboots / freezing

BSydz, I created a user account on this forum just to thank you for the amazing work you've done here.

I was on the verge of ditching my Triumph because of so many annoying little issues - running out of memory, lockups, reboots, WiFi going into 'Error' state, slowness, etc. I've always been leery of running a non-stock ROM, but thought I'd give it a shot. All I can say is WOW!

This isn't the first ROM I started with, but have found my way over to yours within a few days and it is just amazing. Like having a new phone.

I love that you make the Old Geezer fonts/icon size because at the ripe old age of 39, I definitely needed that. I think the big icons look a lot better anyway than the smaller icons in the same position with a bunch of blank space around them.

My only issues seem to be some lag to the interface and sometimes missing key touches at times. My hope is that v6 supercharger will correct that issue today.

I can only imagine the amount of personal time you've put in to this, so again I'd like to say thank you! :adore: Much appreciated!

Warm regards,
Mazer

First off agreed! BSydz is the man!

I was in the same situation, almost went EVO then installed this rom and changed my mind heh heh.

V6 Supercharger will help get rid of the lag, not all the way, about 90% of it in my experience. The missing key touches will not be helped by V6.

Ok, so today I (backed up and) wiped my fairly stable CM7 (GB) which I've been on for months. I installed the 4/18 v2 version of this Beta ICS PAD rom, followed by the newer "touch" Kernel from post #301, then the Google Now and finally the symlinked GApps per all the links in this thread... I was very hopeful.

Installed a bunch of apps including Strava (mountain bike logging), my main nemesis app on the Triumph. I couldn't get the inbuilt GPS to lock in a reasonable period of time (same on CM7), so I used my external GPS via BT. I got it linked, and rode a couple miles. Pulled it out and the Strava app was non-responsive. I rebooted, still non responsive. I loaded Google My Tracks, it seemed to be doing better, but I still think there is an inherent stability problem either in the BT stack, the GPS drivers, or a combination of both.

In addition I found the touch response to be laggy, inconsistent and in general very slow. I don't really want to play with that third party turbo boosting software (V7?) everyone keeps talking about until it is much more simple to implement or is built into the kernel!!!

On a positive note I was VERY happy to see the camera working properly, kudos!
This ROM is a step in the right direction and I am very much looking forward to the next, and hopefully stable release. If anyone thinks getting rid of Google Now would improve performance (I didn't even try to use it) I would be willing to reinstall without it.

I will have to go back to CM7 for now unless someone has a recommendation to improve the laggy performance and the unstable BT/GPS.

Hope this helps, I'm happy to test other features or apps to see if some of my problems are OS or app related. I'm leaning toward OS or hardware since the built in GPS has never been reliable on my Triumph no matter what I do :(

FWIW, I have been using this ROM and I like the overall look and feel. But, I flashed the new touch (drivers?), and ever since the night I had the garbled text issue I have had random restarts and freezes. My son called me and the phone seemed to be froze, but he could hear me, and I could not hear him.

I thought it could be an app that I installed, mainly Word Hero. I un-installed it and still get the random restarts. Will keep you updated.

The touch screen kernel will give you freezes and reboots. As for the garbled text it's a ROM issue. You might want to flash his gaming kernel and try it out.

Sorry for being such a blockhead, but do you have a link to the download. I cannot seem to find it.

Found it :-)

Ok, new release, check the OP. I think I have a very solid setup. I have refined the initial layout, it is set up just how I want it. :D I also replaced the Old Folks Mode with a Stock CM9 Mode, which can also be found in the OP. Jumbled text seems to still be around, I have to do some digging. But over all it seems very snappy. Let me know how it goes.

I was just doing some looking into the jumbled text. Here is what it really is....what is happening is that part of the words are in black and the rest are in white. When I changed the background color in one of my apps I could see the text was like that. Also I noticed it only started when you fixed the video streaming for apps like Skype and ooVoo and also got FFC to work.To quote G60 when we talked about his builds from last year "when you fix one thing it seems like you break something else".My theory is that maybe what you changed to get the FFC to work has something to do with it.Only way to confirm it is if ryder makes a CM9 build with your FFC fix.If we get the same text issue then it confirms my theory. If not then it tells us that it's something else.Anyways just wanted to put that out there. Thanks again for another release BSydz!!!

Note to self (and all the other devs): make sure the overlays in the device files are up to date and are exact matches to the frameworks or app file that they are replacing, except for our edits. I had to pull the last release, like five minutes after I posted it, I tried to send a MMS and it fc'ed, got the log and it was missing stuff from the config.xml. So after looking through some of the other overlays, I found quite a few entries missing.

Release should be back up in a few minutes.

OK, build is up now.

Let me know what you think.

I'm running the april version of this rom, is it possible to flash this new may version without having to format and re-install everything? Just update it to new one?

Do I just flash it without formatting?

been running 10 hours without random reboot, the rom is snappy, havent notice any lag. the camera seems focus faster. besides the problems you already mentioned, automatic brightness doesn't work for me(been flashed twice). this will definitely be my daily rom! waiting to see more changes and improvement! thanks for all the hard work and well done!!!!

I suggest starting fresh, cause a lot has changed, but ...

This may cause issues ...

Follow these steps at your own risk ...

1. Reboot to recovery
2. Make Backup
3. Wipe cache
4. Install ROM
5. Install Gapps/Gnow & Symlinked Gapps
6. Reboot

You should be good, but I have had times when some apps didn't like the setup.

Possibly not the best place to post this, but I'd like some opinions. My Triumph died the other day and VM offered me a replacement T for $79. I'd get to stay on my $25 plan that way, but it is an old phone that bsyds is keeping alive. Don't know if I should stay or go- and the question is go to what. My phone if choice is the HTC one, I can get it for $149 on some plans, all of which will cost more per month.

Can anyone point me to a good forum discussing various carriers, phones and plans?
