Root ROM Manager won't create a backup?

smed

Lurker
Hi everyone,

not been a poster on here but been a lurker for a while and i finally decided to start debranding my Orange branded Desire tonight after the postman finally delivered my Kingston 2Gb card for my gold card.

I've successfully rooted my phone using the Unrevoked method and now have superuser access, i then used Titanium Backup to backup my user apps and data, the problem then occurred when trying to use the Backup ROM option in ROM Manager.

I flashed the latest ClockwordMod recovery and pressed 'Backup Current ROM', this then booted into recovery and the following error message appeared:

ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.7
E:Can't find MISC :
E:Can't mount CACHE :recovery/command
E:Can't find MISC :
E:Can't mount CACHE :recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC :

When Manually pressing 'backup and restore > backup' i get the following error:

SD Card space free: 14082MB
Backing up boot...
Error while dumping boot image!
E:Can't mount CACHE :recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC :

Whatever i choose to call the backup appears in the 'clockworkmod/backup' folder on my SD card but the folder is empty.

I tried using an older version of ClockworkMOD as i found suggested somewhere but when it boots into the recovery screen it still says v2.5.0.7, i saw someone mention clearing the downloads before installing an older version but i can't see a way of doing that, any ideas?

Any help would be great and very much appreciated, so if you have any ideas please let me know ;)

When you rooted with unrevoked, you replaced your native recovery with clockworkmod recovery. Rom manager isnt using this. If you boot into recovery manually using vol down and power from off (see rooting faq) you may get better results.

Failing that, replace with amonra

Tried doing it in recovery as you said, still won't work, and while trying to find a download of AmonRa for the desire stumbled across the following over on XDA:

It appears to be a problem with my desire being one of the new PVT4 models which uses a different NAND chip meaning that clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 doeesn't work according to the XDA forums - [CAUTION] New HTC Desire model spotted. PVT4 - S-OFF: not yet. Recovery: CWM updated. - xda-developers

I've just installed the modified clockworkmod in that thread using unRevoked and then pressed 'backup current ROM' in ROM Manager and its now backed up successfully :)

nothing is ever straightforward! :p

Just tried installing Leedroid using the modified version of clockworkmod and got the following:

install from sd card...
finding update package...
opening update package...
installing update...
formating cache:...
formating system:...
copying files...
formating Boot:...
E:Board does not support mtd utils.E:Failure at
line388:
write_raw_image PACKAGE:boot.img BOOT:
Installation aborted

Think i'll be giving AmonRa a go after all as people have said that this problem is related to ClockworkMod 2.5.1.3, my question is will i have to make a new Nandroid backup using AmonRa or will it just us the files that clockworkmod created?

Thanks in advance ;)

Try an alternative Clockwork version.

2.5.0.7 has always worked flawlessly for me...

doesn't work on the PVT4 desire :(

Well I installed AmonRa and thought I might as well create a backup in that anyway, then when it finished creating a backup it went into bootloop and then couldn't restore an earlier version as the folder directory wasn't there. I took my memory card out and put it in my pc and moved the new backup file into the directory it said it couldn't find (can't remember but think the folder missing was 'nandroid').

With the card back in the phone i tried to restore using the newly created file which gave me an error and then using the file i had used previously to successfully restore and that gave me an error too....

At a loss as to what to do I remembered that I had Leedroid on my sdcard in the phone so I decided to flash it using AmonRa and hey presto, it worked!

So i'm now on Leedroid, however I think I may have to reinstall clockworkmod incase I have to restore again, although will try making another backup with AmonRa first

its not amonRA that is an issue.
Ive found amonRA to be a lot more stable than clockworkmod
you cannot restore backups created in clockworkmod using amonRA
you should have just restored the backup you made using amonRA instead

the problem you have is that you have a new pvt4 device, if it has an erase size of 40000 then you cannot use s-off, clockworkmod is broken and only certain custom roms work on it currently

yeah, that links the same as the one I posted earlier.

didn't think they would be compatible, i did try restoring the backup i took in AmonRA but it didn't like it, think this was down to the directory path though, do you know the path it saves to on the SD Card?

This is an old thread. Rooting erase size 40,000 devices is fine, you just have to install the right recovery. It's described in SUroot's rooting FAQ, which you can find from the all things root sticky post (link in my sig).

Have a look there, & if that doesn't help then tell us exactly what the error message is.
