Looks like this is a function of the Google Now Launcher / Material Design. I'll live with it.

Thanks - that seems to be the answer. Luckily I have a choice of launchers. The SlimLauncher restores the background to transparent. I appreciate everyone's input.

Did u do factory restore first and format data?

I wiped everything except external SD and also formatted internal... I've installed this build before fine, the only thing I can think of that has changed is the version of TWRP...

That just got me thinking... the new (2.8.6) TWRP build is dated 5/5... coincidence?

OK that one other one is ok some people had problems with 2.8.6.0 just to let u know probly b fine on a kk ROM I'm using it with no problems I'm on a lolipop rom
