Root [ROM RELEASE] 2.2-based Byron Bare

This is the first public release of Byron Bare, by several requests.

This is built upon the 2.2.1 release from LG (i.e., ZVD) and thus requires that you've gotten the froyo radio flashed by following the steps here: http://androidforums.com/ally-all-things-root/263285-guide-froyo-2-2-1-root-users.html

One of the main focuses of Byron ROMs is responsiveness. This is not achieved through overclocking or kernel hacks but instead by maximizing free memory. This is done in other ROMs via apps2sd and other tricks, but in Byron this is done through a Google-approved mechanism known as odexing. While most ROMs brag about being "deodexed" (for different reasons), Byron is fully odexed (including apps that are *not* odexed in stock LG ROMs). This means your system apps need not store anything in the dalvik-cache, which frees up space on the /data partition.

The downside to an odexed ROM (and the reason other ROMs are deodexed) is that it is impossible to theme the interface in many of the ways the root community generally uses (such as flashing update.zip files that replace system frameworks).

Byron Bare is a very minimal system. The only apps you'll find in your drawer are:
o 3G Mobile Hotspot
o Browser
o Calendar
o Camera
o Clock
o Contacts
o Email
o Gallery
o Market
o Messaging
o Music
o Phone
o Settings
o Superuser
o Talk

instructions:
o make a backup
o flash this zip
(no need to wipe anything, the update script should do it for you... though it won't hurt to do it manually as well)

dev stuff:
o the default shell in Byron is the BusyBox shell. The original Android shell remains as sh0.
o install-busybox is a script to "install" busybox (create all the necessary links to busybox tools)
o sysmount and sysunmount mount your /system partition writable and read-only, respectively. Remember to sysmount before you install-busybox.

Report back with anything useful to me so I can improve this ROM: apps you'd like to see added, apps you never use and wish weren't there (or, if you went so far, ones you removed), and anything not working as you'd expect.

It's a super nice stock ROM for people who don't need most of the garbage that LG\Verizon put on the phone. And it's a heck of lot easier flashing this instead of using the stock ROM and having to remove the apps with Titanium backup. Plus it has the added benefit of being odexed.
 
Yeah... it's not a speed demon like Punisher or Velocity by any means, but for those that tend to stay on stock, it's a nice option that lies just a couple degrees away from stock while still holding a few of the benefits of going custom.

I like it. I know it's never going to be the next Velocity, but for what it is, I think it runs well.

I actually think this is faster than v.4 on my phone anyways. It has added benefit of being froyo to to size it up. =D

Well, right... in this case, Android 2.2 might give this an edge. But that wasn't my work, and the day Velocity+2.2 comes out... well, you know :P
 
great job I might put this on my wifes phone she doesn't need the superfast speed like I want to have but for a simple bare bones rom this could be perfect thanks for the good work!
 
I'm running the full Byron (4.1.2), but the highest out of 4 I got 7.562.

hmm that is the same as stock froyo shouldnt increased ram make a difference? i need to know if this is worth leaving my 2.1 punisher rom for ( i get 6.9 without oc rite now)

Linpack is a measure of processing power, not responsiveness, and as such I'm not surprised it's the same as stock 2.2.
 
Awesome...this is pretty much what I was looking for. I'll use for a couple days and post back any improvements that I think could be done. Thanks for the time you put into this!
 
Who would be interested in a few packages (in update.zip format) that would allow you to install, as system apps, a few common apps? I'm thinking Gmail, YouTube, etc. If most people end up installing these, it makes more sense to have a system (and odexed) installation method available, in the spirit of Byron.

Let me know what you Bare users think, and what apps you'd like to see.

I'll let you know in a little while. I'd try it right now, but I'm on the line with Verizon right now, Complaining about the wife's Droid 2 Global....... again. Going to tell them to shove it and send me another Ally. It's pretty bad when an entry level phone works better than a phone that's supposed to be top dog. :mad:
 
The wifi tether that drels made for aosp froyo works flawlessly. On another note, I really like this rom. Its not flashy but its quick,responsive and nice seeing as how the bloatware has been removed. Great job!

Can you link me to this? Is it a version of the Wifi Tether program linked above, or just something he made that is named similarly?
