Root [ROM RELEASE] 2.2-based Byron Bare

I'm guessing that installing google maps/navigation will take up memory since they're not installed as system apps?

Now that i think about it, once the rom is flashed and everything set up, one could technically install Maps and Nav, etc. as system apps. Just use adb to put the apk's in the /system/app folder. The problem is the odexing, i dont think they are odexed from the market. It's not like they have to be odexed to be system apps though.

Sure, you could push them to the system folder, and then the apk won't take /data space, but the entry in the dalvik cache would because it's not odexed. They can't be odexed from the Market because odexing customizes the app for your specific system.

As discussed earlier in the thread, I'm working on making zips to flash to add in other odexed apps. Maps (which includes Navigation and Places) is one that is planned. I was holding off on some feedback on the Gmail zip before I started making a bunch, but I've gotten at least one "success", so I'm going ahead.

Eventually we'll run out of space in /system/app though.

Perhaps the Genie widget or a clock/weather widget?

Just throwing stuff out there.

Considering all the crap that comes in the stock ROM, I don't think you're in danger of that happening for a while...

When I navigate to /system with Root Manager it says I have 7.56mb free and 170.94mb used. Looks like it'll be sooner than later for me.

I don't know what Root Manager is, or what you're looking at, but that sounds wrong (unless you've installed dozens of apps to /system). Try going to adb shell or a terminal emulator and typing df. Look at the line that refers to /system. That will tell you your space free and used.

Update: I'm using Byron 4.1.2, and I have this:
/system:182784K total, 169848K used, 12936K available

considering how much more stuff is in Byron, and how small the typical apk is, I'm not concerned with these numbers. As I said, you may need to worry if you're installing tons of apps to /system, but then again that's par for the course if you're doing something like that.

Update2: your numbers match up with the same total space as mine. So, maybe it is right. You must have installed a lot of stuff, and in that case you kinda have to expect it's going to fill up.

Catch 22... I was waiting to flash this rom until some of those apps were created.

How hard is it to learn how to odex apps? Maybe teaching us how to 'fish' would save you some work. Regardless, I would like to learn how to 'cook' more, use to do it all the time on Windows mobile.

Odexing an entire ROM involves more work than you'd expect. Odexing a couple apps to work with a mostly odexed ROM may not be so bad. I may be able to whip something up for you.

Regardless, I'll have the app packages available soon.

I meant Root Explorer. Damn that memory(in my head) of mine.

That 12936K you have available is only 12.Xmb, which isn't all that much and is similar to mine now at 11608K available.

Edit: I didn't see your edit when I posted this.

To the guys who want more ringtones and system sounds....

Just get an app called "Rings Extended". Then, ANYTHING that you have on your MicroSD card can be set as a ring tone or notification.

I love this ROM. Very well done. Great idea to make a bare ROM and allow us to add back in what we want.

Quick question: where do I get the installers for any of the stock apps I may want? For example, I want Voice Dial back, and the ability to use voice input. There may be others, but that is the start.

Android apps don't really have installers but I get the idea.

Voice Search is in the Market, but Voice Dial doesn't seem to be. However, if you acquire an apk for it, you can probably use "adb install" to install it as a downloaded app, or drop it into /system/app.

If you want it odexed like the rest of the ROM, you'd have to do it manually (or, if enough people are interested, I could include it as one of the addons I make).

I've added the first round of addons for Byron Bare to the main post. You do not need to wipe anything when flashing.

As always, make a backup before flashing and report back whether you have success.

Thanks for the info, i had no idea abot the odexing stuff. I patiently await your post on Google Maps. I think that with that app, this rom will be perfect for me...(at least until a decently themed (and fast) rom comes out.)
I'll have to do some research on odex and deodex, just so i know what exactly it is.lol.

Have you ever tried VLingo? its in the market. IMO much much better than the stock voice search/dialer/etc...

I've added an addon for Wifi Tether. Please let me know how it works.

Please try the addon packages, and suggest the next batch I should do. I probably won't make anymore up tonight, but I'll come back tomorrow and possibly whip up a few more then. Make your suggestions :)

As I posted in the Byron thread, wifi Tether is instant FC for me. I figured i'd put it here too since this thread seems to get more traffic.

Edit:

I'd still like a weather widget of some sort. Be it a Fancy Widgets type thing or the stock Genie or LG Clock Weather Widget. I'm easy to please. ;-)

Dark:

You have made a very nice and responsive 2.2 based package here :) I finally completed the steps to get rooted, and flashed this, and I'm very happy with how much you were able to trim out. The phone seems much more responsive than 2.1 Overclocked. I can only imagine how 2.2 would be with an OC kernel.

not to be pushy, but could you possibly add facebook to the odexed list? i use it alot, but not twitter. gmail, maps and facebook are the only ones i would need added to byron bare. Thanks!
