Root [ROM] Sleipnir v2.4.0.5 - 10/24/13 - VM & SPRINT

Installed the new build. So far so good. Completed all the steps and everything is working fine. The best thing I noticed was Play working right off the bat.

Sounds all good. Right? Well I can't have that happening. I don't want you dancing around all happy because Play was working. MMS still not flying. I can't wait for the new build.

Good work.

Yep, Play Store was updated to prevent crashes (which are caused by an outdated version being a system app that's odexed, for some reason). As for MMS, that's a little concerning - oddly enough, after reading your post and testing MMS for myself, this was the first time I've ever gotten it to work post-stock, lol. Looks like there's something to weed out for Sprint users as far as the original MMS.apk is concerned - I appreciate the feedback!

1 awesome logo

2. I'll try it soon

3. Congrats artine

4. Will you update hydra

5. You should update the screenshots in the op

6. AWESOME LOGO
  1. :)
  2. Cool.
  3. Thanks!
  4. Absolutely, just making sure bugs are ironed out on this build first before anything else.
  5. I've been planning on it - in fact, it's on my to-do list for Sleipnir, but I am intentionally waiting to update the screenshots until after the theme has finished being revamped :)
  6. :D
Was the theme updated on this release?

Nope, and intentionally so: I don't want to release a half-finished theme, especially since there is a lot left to change. However, enjoy the init.d in the mean time :D

So no mms with this latest build?

For Virgin Mobile users I would say yes, because I was actually able to send MMS myself just now, but I'll look into it :)

EDIT: As usual, let me know, everyone, if there are bugs. I'm fairly certain I got most of them out, but if any new ones arise I'd like to hear them to see if I can go about fixing them. The two things I'm most concerned about now are the internal/external SD cards (mass storage vs charge, and unmounting and remounting especially), GPS (because I updated it - the initial lock-on might be slow, but future ones should be a lot faster than they used to be), and of course MMS, but if anything else arises let me know too. All of these work fine for me right now personally, so keep me posted please! :)

Also, I just fixed the oddly-broken OP, lol. There are Sendspace mirrors coming out within the hour as well.

is it possible to release a "special edition" of the rom with the black msging? i've never had a problem sending/receiving mms since i started using the rom so i don't know what all the fuss is about. the idea of swaping out apk's is kinda scary!

meanwhile. what is the init.d thing everyone keeps screaming about? in layman's terms? :)

i was actually thinking about waiting until the final release (which sounds like it might be on the horizon) before updating my rom again. i'm using 2.4.0.2. and unless someone can convince me this new build is WAY better i'm gonna wait... i don't have any stability issues.

Thanx Artine I'll try to jot down some of those websites & links I can't access, & also thanx for whatever u did to the download cuz I was able to get it to work later last night, update is running great!

one website that's wonky for me since switching to sleipnir is that links don't work on the twitter mobile site. a friend who has an optimus v doesn't have the link problem and i don't have it from any other device except my phone.
my friend who's phone i put the rom on also has the same problem but like me didn't before the rom. certainly isn't the end of the world.

meanwhile. installed the update anyway... no problems so far... but the mms... lol...

Certainly, but the old one does have MMS issues. The goal is to be more bug free on flash, not more buggy, lol :p If you're going about switching the .apks, you'll want to remove the .odex file for the MMS.apk that was flashed in originally or you're gonna have a bad time.

where would i find the black mms.apk and what is this .odex file you speak of? is there a .zip of the black mms lurking around somewhere?

thanks again. :smokingsomb:

Wow awesome job on this latest build, Artine! I don't know what all you did, but the phone runs faster, has fewer mobile data drops and battery life is better. Maybe I am imagining all of these improvements lol, but it seems to be the case.

I also have issues with twitter links. I've also had troubles with bit.ly links. What I do is copy the link into longurl.org and click on the expanded link from there.

init.d scripting support means that some parts of the Android system can be modified, monitored, or otherwise tweaked to ooze out even more performance post-flash. The tweaks could be anything under the sun, from increasing efficiency to extending battery life, enlarging the SD card's cache to improve read/write times, etc. The fact that that officially works now in full means that all of the old scripts that were included in Sleipnir that weren't active before, are now running happily just fine, thus boosting the overall performance and efficiency of Sleipnir as a whole. All of this, a GPS lock-on improvement, and stability increases make me highly recommend updating.

Also, I've been considering just re-theming the MMS.apk, since the black one has had reported MMS issues. I think for the time being I'll upload a build soon with the black one back, and let everyone give me their feedback on MMS with the black one - it very well could be that MMS issues were caused by earlier builds of the ROM instead of the actual .apk itself.

Actually, I didn't modify the download at all, lol :p I am, however, glad to hear that it's working well for you! And thank you - knowing which websites that the ROM is having issues with can allow me to test them on my own device and look into modifying the hosts file accordingly if the issue is replicatable.

Man still updating this ROM? Just gets better and better.

I also agree you should start snooping around CM9 when you're not busy...Any news on Jellybean progress?

But of course! :)

I'm learning about CM on the side and ICS, as Sleipnir on CM is a goal of mine officially at this point :)

What links aren't working, and what browser is being used for the mobile Twitter website? I would recommend, highly, anything but the stock browser.

The black MMS.apk can be found in an earlier build, and I have uploaded it here. You want to copy the .apk, browse to /system/app, remount it as R/W, delete MMS.odex, paste the .apk into that directory and overwrite the pre-existing one, remount /system/app as R/O, reboot into CWM, wipe the dalvik-cache, and reboot normally.

:D

I would make a flashable .zip, but it's safer to format /system entirely and have it completely reinstalled than to try to wipe a single app and .odex file and trust Android to not to accidentally destroy something unintentionally in the process, creating havoc and breaking things.

Am I getting that old that I can't see the download links? LOL

Hopefully not! Lol!

Various things, the most important being init.d :)

There should hopefully be no issues with the SD cards either - I modified all of the init.d scripts to remove /mmc, /emmc, /sdcard, and /sdcard/External_SD references so that those partitions (which are basically the same one) aren't touched, because that was causing a plethora of issues in and of themselves.

I also have issues with twitter links. I've also had troubles with bit.ly links. What I do is copy the link into longurl.org and click on the expanded link from there.

Good to know, thank you!

Also, as an update: if it is possible, I am going to look into whether or not I can add 3G to the Power Control widget, or swap out either GPS or Sync with a 3G toggle instead. Also, Sendspace mirrors are now up.

Another update: As far as CM Swipe Notifications are concerned, while I have had no errors post-boot notified through the GUI, the SystemUI.apk is malfunctioning and causing all sorts of other weirdness. Progress! Seems like there's still some editing left to do, lol.

Great work on the rom but with the new version of the rom my elite keeps getting stuck in reboot loops. It will boot up then get to the home screen then about 5 seconds later the screen flashes twice and it reboots. I've fully formated the phone several times and reflashed but each time after a few hours the problem comes back. Any suggestions? I didn't have any problems before updating to the latest version of your rom.

I don't know if this is where to ask this question, but how come on "some" custom roms we can change the "Boot Animation" using Rom Toolbox & on some we can't???

Sounds like one of two things:

  1. Instability due to the CPU being clocked too high. This is a common problem, that is usually solved by lowering the maximum CPU frequency through a CPU tuner app, and raising the minimum frequency as well (bare minimum should be 245MHz, or one step up from that).
  2. A bad flash. Did you make sure to verify the MD5 or SHA1?
Only problem I see is when I try to go to "Voice Mail" it re-boots, Other than that it's "Great"!!!

Voice mail works fine for me... just dialed it, lol :p Could it have been a bad download? Did you verify the MD5?

and

It has to do with where the animation is located in the system. You have to manually move it to wherever it is on this Rom. I can't seem to find it myself.
"Hint hint, nudge nudge" lol

Reply: The boot animation for Sleipnir is a legacy animation to save space - meaning it's two images, and one of those two is sliding behind the other in a loop. Both are stored in /system/framework/framework-res.apk/assets/images. As for an actual bootanimation.zip file, they can be simply pasted into /system/media, and upon reboot the system will automatically switch to using your custom bootanimation from that point forward unless there is no longer a bootanimation.zip file present, in which case it reverts back to using the legacy animation. Boot animations should be able to be switched out normally, just make sure they're MDPI and that /system/media is set to R/W and not R/O. :)

links are on the first page of this thread under "current build" just scroll down a tiny bit and you'll see it :smokingsomb:
