Root [ROM] Sleipnir v2.4.0.5 - 10/24/13 - VM & SPRINT

i took a walk on the wild side and tried out cm9 for a while this weekend... cool rom... not quite as stable as sleipnir yet though... i feel like i cheated on my gf or something. lol.

meanwhile... i noticed when messing around with stuff that there's no android de-bugging icon when you're connected via usb? is this new? or am i just noticing it now?

Is debugging enabled in settings?

more importantly.... none of my nandroid backups are working. regardless if i'm trying to do a straight restore... or just restore my data i keep getting "error while restoring /system."

is that bad?

Have you recently changed from CWM5 to CWM6 or TWRP? If so that's likely the problem.

not to my knowledge... i've only installed it once... back in feb. when i first rooted the phone...

is it possible when i installed cm9 it changed the version of cwm on my phone? if so how do i get the old one back?

it looks like it did change to v6... wtf? how did that happen?

is it too late to switch back? and if i do will i be able to restore my /system /data?

Yea iv wondered that too is v5 better

actually the version doesn't seem to be the problem. i made a new nandroid backup and i can't restore from that either.

basically it looks like somehow i've lost the restore function of cwm. bummer.

HELP! (I'm posting here because I was backing up my phone to update Sleipnir)
I was in CWM and was performing a back-up when it froze for a little over an hour. I was going to pop the battery and see if that helped right as it blackscreened then crashed. when I got it to turn on again 50% of my pictures, music, etc are missing and now i cant restore or back up anything on cwm. Also, i average between one and two bars of service when i normally average five. Icon "scanning SD card media files... External memory is preparing" is constantly on. I don't know if factory reseting it will screw it up even harder. Any ideas on how to fix it? I've never had this happen.

A quick update: I used my phone extensively over a week 1200+mile trip last week. The ROM is solid and I had no crashes.

I did run into a significant issue with one of the Apps though. I used Google Maps (and Navigation) quite a bit and the phone would have trouble acquiring the initial GPS signal. My wife's stock phone would lock on to the signal in less than 15 seconds (usually 5-10 seconds). Mine would take at least 3 or 4 times longer and once took 3 or 4 minutes to lock onto a signal. I had no issues with the GPS system before I upgraded to Sleipnir. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? I haven't changed any settings on the phone (no overclocking, etc).
Edit: Forgot to mention that once the phone acquired the GPS signal, it never lost the signal. My wife's stock phone would occasionally drop the signal, but mine never did.

I did run into a UI bug with Black Ice and Navigation. I'll post it on the Black Ice thread though.

I appreciate the feedback, thank you! :)

I actually do know why the GPS was functioning that way. It has to do with the US-specific update I made with a modified GPS file from XDA, and that was what was mentioned from that dev as to be expected. While GPS may take a bit longer to lock on, the signal should stay strong consistently - all of which appears to have been exactly what happened, and there's unfortunately a trade-off (faster lock-on, less signal strength, vs longer lock-on, strong signal strength). By all means if someone can come up with (or even myself) a way to get the best of both worlds out of the box, I'm all for it!

In the mean time, there is something I can suggest that does allow you to get the best of both worlds essentially, though it isn't out of the box as I'd like it to be. There's an app called GPS Status that helps get a GPS fix quickly for any phone, using more satellites and updating AGPS data to allow other benefits as well. After firing that up, usually firing up Maps right afterwards on the OE should allow for a rapid lock-on.

In the interim, let me know if you'd prefer a build with the changes to GPS reverted - I can whip one up!

Hope that helps, and that the trip was nice! :)

Many thanks for the detailed reply Artine. I'll try GPS Status and see if that helps. Will report back in a few days after testing it out. Hopefully this will solve the problem. It was an exercise in frustration using the Navigation, especially when one person is driving, and the other is trying find a place nearby (restaurant, gas station, etc), and the Navigation won't lock (and kids are hungry, and...) . Many times we just ended up using my wife's stock phone when we needed a GPS lock quickly. Glad we had time to try out the ROM extensively before I put it on my wife's phone.

I appreciated the offer to build a custom ROM. I'll stick with the current one you've provided, thanks. Less trouble for you and I don't mind the work around. Despite the one (only) issue we had, I'm very happy with the ROM and will install it on the wife's phone if the GPS work-around solves the problem.

BTW, the trip was fun (family vacation) - thank you :-)

Your hard work and Stark Raving's on Black Ice is truly appreciated. You guys are also great at taking feedback and providing quick responses. I'm sure you're all extremely busy in your lives yet you take the time to provide us this great service FOR FREE, no less. Thank you all very much.

A quick update. I installed GPS Status and played with it and Google's Nav (maps). GPS Status also has the same issue. It gets stuck on "Looking for GPS location" - sometimes for over a minute, but usually 30secs or more (in an open parking lot, no obstructions, stock phone locks on in 5-10 secs). Once GPS Status locks on though, the Nav app then seems to lock on in a couple of seconds. The overall time to lock on has decreased (halved?), but is still quite long. I've tried it about a dozen times over the last few days, and the results are the same. I tried playing with the settings on GPS Status and haven't had much luck. I did set 'Sensor filtering' to no filtering and it feels a bit faster but that may be wishful thinking. I've turned on 'show time to GPS fix' and will monitor it for exact numbers now.

Edit: Played with it again and it seems to work now. To speed up the lock on, try this in the Settings menu. Select 'GPS &Sensors ->sensor filtering' and set to No filtering. Then go to 'GPS &Sensors -> Auto-download AGPS...' and change to lowest number (1 hour). Finally, selecting 'Display Tools->keep screen on' seems to help (not sure about this one but I get odd results occasionally if it is not selected). Also, I accidently left GPS status on for a while and the phone rebooted when the lock screen came on, so don't let it time out. To use, start GPS Status, wait till it locks on, then start the Nav app. Time to first GPS Fix is down to under 10 seconds, often under 5secs. If you want to check your lock on time, select 'Display & Tools -> Show time to GPS fix'. FYI in case someone else has the same issue with their GPS as I did.

Well hydra get an update as well? That way I can update my gb stuff one last time.

It most certainly will. After that, Project Mayhem should receive an update as well. That might be my last Gingerbread project.

I do apologize; I had neglected to mention specific settings for the app! Those are similar to what I have had, including auto-download of AGPS data. Glad to hear that you've got the speed down, and as always I do appreciate the feedback! GPS Status and Google Maps work hand-in-hand with eachother, it seems, so with the first you can get a quick fix and the latter has superb signal retention.

No worries Artine. FYI, this morning I noticed that GPS status took a long time to lock on again (73 seconds). No changes to settings since I last posted, so the first lock on is very slow. Subsequent locks are in the 5 sec range. AGPS data was updated in a second or so, so I'm not sure why the first lock after lots of time off is taking so long. Will update if I learn more about the issue.

Anyone else having a problem with Wi-Fi? I can't connect to a WPA2/PSK network. I copied and pasted the 63-digit key from a device that connects, so that shouldn't be the problem.

Edit: Turned off encryption on the router and the phone still won't connect. Other devices are connecting without problems. No luck connecting through WiFi Analyzer either. Network is visible and radio is on.

Edit 2: Works fine with routers at work. Must be an issue with my router only. Strange.

So i tried out the virgin mobile deodex and got 6711 on antutu benchmark. I love this rom. At first i was having problems installing apps so i reflashed the rom a second time to elivate the problem. Sorry i cant upload the picture.low post count.
