Root ROM update

I'm currently running Xylon that I installed back in February. They have a new file from March that I would like to replace the older file. Do I have to do a full wipe and treat it as though I'm installing a completely new file?

I use clockwork mod recovery and just download the file straight to my phone. TWRP and Goo almost wrecked my phone. after several attempts those "easier and recommended" files just won't work with me. Otherwise I think updates are supposed to be automatic on those programs.

Unless the older ROM isn't based on 4.2.2 and the new one is, a full wipe shouldn't be necessary, you should just be able to backup, wipe cache, then flash over the top of the old one.

A full wipe never hurts though and it's a good habit to get in to.

I don't hear about too many people having issues out of Goo or TWRP. Not sure what problems you were having but 9/10 it isn't the actual programs. Especially programs like these that are very well built and do their job very very well. Like I said, I don't know exactly what problems you were having but I do know that a lot of times a ROM that I'm downloading through GOO will stop early leaving me to think that it full downloaded when it actually didn't. So when it flashes, it flashes a corrupt download. Little things like this can leave a person believing that it was the programs fault when actually it was the file. Just throwing that out as an example. Can you describe the issues that you were having with GOO and TWRP?

Like El said above, if your going to 4.2.2 you MUST do a full wipe. You will get FC's out the wazoo if you don't. But if it's not 4.2.2 then you can just flash it over the existing ROM and you should have no issues. I'm not familiar with the ROM so I can't give any more info than that. Hope this helps.

TWRP had no backup saved anywhere after I saved a backup to TWRP in addition to GOO giving me corrupt files on the multiple attempts. At first it would show an MD5 checksum error, then if I tried a couple more times or different files it would say that it finished downloading. Because the file was corrupt and TWRP had not saved a backup, I was stuck in recovery with no OS to fall back to.

Luckily I had the Nexus 4 Toolkit installed and was able to get my phone back to stock. I tried a second time, being very careful to save the backup and double check that it was there. Tried installing a ROM via GOO again, with no MD5sum error and same thing... went to reboot into the new ROM and it was basically an empty OS with a constant FC explaining no setup wizard. When I tried to reboot back into recovery and recover my saved file, it was no where to be found again.

Clockwork Mod Recovery has worked flawlessly for me so far on multiple attempts.
