I don't think 'Law', in it's scientific definition, means what you think it meansI'm not sure if I would be able to support a candidate who completely disregards the scientific theory of evolution... which is more like a law, but it's called a theory to appease religious individuals.
Laws are generalizations about what has happened, from which we can generalize about what we expect to happen. They pertain to observational data. The ability of the ancients to predict eclipses had nothing to do with whether they knew just how they happened; they had a law but not a theory.
Theories are explanations of observations (or of laws). The fact that we have a pretty good understanding of how stars explode doesn't necessarily mean we could predict the next supernova; we have a theory but not a law.
William McComus lists gravity as a modern example of a well-established law for which no really satisfying theory is available. We can use the Law of Gravity, and even correct it for the effects of relativity (General Relativity), but we don't have any consensus notion of how it functions! Is it geometry or gravitons?
I would say your argument holds merit except for the fact that al-Awlaki had left the US, was residing in the middle east and active as a terrorist. At that point he had forfeited his rights as a US citizen.
When you consider the person leading the GOP race (before the debates this evening that is) is someone who tried to impeach Clinton for infidelity yet has a record of infidelity himself, it's really sad that Ron Paul isn't really considered by the GOP. I think it would be funny if Newt did win the nomination and won the election only to have the democrats impeach him for infidelity. If I remember correctly, didn't he divorce his wife while she was fighting cancer? I can't keep track of all the slimy things these politicians do in their private life only to pretend that they stand for "Family Values".
As far as evolution, it's something I believe in and to be quite honest it's something you hear about when a viral or bacterial strain becomes resistant to our current medicine. It's that particular organism trying to survive. Thus, when a politician claims there's no such thing, I think it's foolhardy on their part. But, I think issues such as this don't need to necessarily be a deciding factor, granted if some religious nut type like GWB believes in the Rapture and has access to set this world off into that direction, you really can't help but wish that an Agnostic or Atheist would get elected if anything to avert the temptation to bring upon our destruction because they read it in a fairy tale.
As to al-Awlaki, he was a confirmed terrorist and at a terrorist facility that was struck by drones. Ron Paul makes it sound like he was taken out by a sniper. The day we can label and convict our own American citizens for a crime without a trial is a sad day indeed.
So what if he was in the middle east? As far as I know that's not a crime. Was he a terrorist? There's a chance. But without a fair trial who is to pass judgement? There is a system in place for a reason, and the powers that be should not overstep their respective boundaries.
In the end, this issue is made out to be way more important than it actually is. Just another story the media sensatiozalizes to divert our attention from the real issues.
I'm an American citizen. I'm residing in the states. I'm not a terrorist. So why are then are my phone calls tapped and my privacy invaded under the patriot act without a court order? These are the hard issues that should be truly worrisome if we are to adhere to a preservation of our American values.

I do agree with you about the rest though, this is being used to distract and Ron Paul is just as guilty of it as any of them.
The Patriot Act needs to be abolished immediately, it has been and is misused so much it is pathetic. It is an affront to American freedom and just another sign of where this country is headed.
If he was apprehended, especially on U.S. soil then he should get a trial, but as an acting leader of one of our worst enemies he is subject to attack by the military.
Thank you for all that. I've been keeping a close eye on Ron Paul, as well as Mr. Cain <--- my front runner at the moment.
My problems with most Republican candidates, a "hot" issue: taxes, which most certainly do need to be raised temporarily in order to begin undoing the massive debt. I keep waiting for some honesty about that from the right, but it keeps coming from the left.
Nobody's perfect, but that issue grinds my gears. The other stuff, pot decrim, abortion, death penalty and on and on, that's social stuff that changes with the wind and tides over time. No matter how we feel about issues such as those, they're going to only temporarily be the way we want them, I've noticed over time.
I also found it interesting that Ron Paul was excluded from the Republican Jewish Coalition.
meet the new boss. same as the old boss.
there are no candidates worth voting for from either party.
