Root [ROOT] 2.3.6 Update

DO i have to use a specific kernel? I was running 2.3.6 but rooted and wound up with 2.3.5. I am on Verizon and have a Samsung stratosphere.... Will this room work for me? I'm new to this but am catching on quick. Lol

You sir are in the wrong forum lol. This is for the Samsung Admire ONLY.

Anyone think they can give me a hand? I've been screwing with this on and off for a few days now. I've read all of the tutorials and the topics on this portion of the forum, but I'm still having problems.

I installed CWM on my phone, followed the directions exactly as they were posted, but when I try to apply sdcard:update.zip it tells me that it failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory) -- Installation aborted.

Any help?

Try the install from zip option and navigate to where you stored the root zip. Please note that this is for 2.3.6 only :P

I have 2.3.6 And it won't let me navigate. I click to apply the sdcard:update.zip it automatically spits out a failed message, won't let me 'search' for anything (I do have the zip file from this thread downloaded onto my sdcard).

You're supposed to choose the 'install zip from sdcard' option

I don't seem to have that option; it appears I still have the default samsung recovery (I'm guessing).

I have:

Reboot system
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
test redbend fota[FS]

This is what I'm not getting, I followed the steps for the CWM installation and the phone did what the tutorial said it would. I consider myself fairly computer savvy, but I've never owned an android before (that was my wife's thing) so I'm trying to learn as I go, sorry if I'm coming off as a newb.

Yeah you don't have cem installed so you might wanna go back and redo the installation of cwm.

So i just realized that you aren't capable of updating the su binary. I just tried updating to the newest one after not attempting since.this method.was released. Thats as fair as im ever able to get.

Can somebody help? I'm new to this. I installed CWM and then followed the instructions in the OP. Everything went well. I installed Root Explorer to uninstall the bloatware. Using Root Explorer I go to system/app's and select the files I want to delete. I tried to "Delete" Metro411, MetroStudio, MetroBackup and ThinkFree. Each of them didn't work because it said it could not remove them because they are system files.

So I installed Root Checker. It installed, I ran it. It asked for root access and was granted it by SuperUser. It verified that the phone is rooted. So I downloaded Super aToolbox and tried using that to uninstall. It didn't give me the error but after each "Delete" the app was still listed in system/app and also in the list of installed programs.

I've removed the battery and restarted several times (3, I think). No problems. SuperUser is still installed. But I still can't remove the bloatware. Root Explorer still checks and is granted root access (or whatever that is called). And Root Checker still verifies that the phone is rooted.

Any idea's?

easy your system is probably set to R/O not to R/W. anyways dont used those apps to debloat, use Titanium Backup from the play store to debloat.

You're are correct. I was on R/O. Once i moved to R/W it removed them.

I didn't download Titantium because earlier posts in this thread said that this root wasn't working with it. I was trying (badly) to follow the examples of what was working. Is Titanium now working with this?

Thanks again for the help.

I tried searching... Could not find it. I just updated to 2.3.6.

Can someone point me to where I can download the update.zip so I can root my phone?. I can't find out anyway...

Thanks!

I know man that's what I have. that's why I'm here. I can't seem to find the update.zip file mentioned here.

That post wasn't directed to you? There's no update.zip file for this root. Unless you mean that admire 2.3.6 root zip then yeah that's on the first page

Hi All,

Guess I am late to this party. I have had the Admire (2.3.6) for a few months and successfully installed CWM today. I downloaded the Admire-2.3.6-Root.zip from the top post from the OP as directed and it is stored on the SD card. CWM installs it successfully, but still no root. It is frustrating to say the least. Before posting, I have spent hours scouring this forum and external sources to no avail. I know from reading that this phone is tricky. SU cannot access root when trying to update. I don't really care about the update, just the fact that it cannot get root access. If CWM says it is successful, why can I not get root?

yeah one feature of this that would be great would being able to share apps

Have you actually tried to use an app that requires root access? Root checker apps arent always reliable. I myself don't know why we cant update from within the app but i do know root access should work after immediately flashing this. Just try using an app that requires root, and don't use/install Titanium Backup because that unroots

I reinstalled My Backup Pro which I couldn't fit (due to bloatware which is the reason for rooting...) until I removed some other apps I like. It immediately acknowledged root access. Yea!

Well, MyBackup Pro made zero changes to the bloatware. I just purchased and installed Root Explorer since another poster reported success. It says I don't have root access when I try to mount RW. My Backup Pro says I have root, yet I cannot remove apps even when going through the motions and it tells me to restart the phone. What gives?

All I want to do is get rid of a handful of memory hogging useless apps.

I don't get any SU alerts. Tried Super aToolBox and it won't remove anything due to lack of SU access. Ugggh!:(

....anybody out there? Why won't root stick?:mad::mad:

Even I had problems rooting my admire with this method. Did you update superuser or anything?

At first, no...then yes. If you mean updating the binary from within SU, it failed at gaining access to root. I even tried updating the app itself but that didn't work either. Had to download update from Play store, but it did not do any better. Somewhere on this thread I had read that SuperUser app shouldn't be updated?

Either way, nothing has worked to get root. ODIN worked perfectly the first time out. Took only a few minutes to get full green bar and "PASS".

The zip file was successful too. At least CWM said it was successfully installed. I even did a factory reset. Nada.

MyBackup Pro gives me a toolbox option for freezing/uninstalling apps, breaking links to market, etc. only when rooted. However, nothing really happens when I go through the motions of removing an app even when it says "successful".

I had experience rooting a 2.3.4 Admire and it went off without a hitch.

Were you able to root this version with ANY method? It frustrates me that I cannot get rid of the bloatware when others have reported success. Thanks for your time and interest in helping
