Root [ROOT] 2.3.6 Update

Look if you flash this when you are in 2.3.6 and you look in ypur app drawer and find the superuser then you have root, no questions about it. The binary will never update i dont know why but it doesnt okay. I have rooted my admire with this soo many times. If this doesn't root you then im sorry but there is not other root method for the samsung admire on 2.3.6 gingerbread. Try buying root explorer from the playstore or try using this app to debloat as its what i used https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsIm5hbWUuZG9oa29vcy5yb290dW5pbnN0YWxsZXIiXQ..

OK, I am downloading the app you recommended as I write.

[UPDATE] Tried deleting Appstore and got message "Unable to delete app. Please try again." dammit

I want to make clear that Superuser is on my phone and has been since the first attempt at root two days ago. But, I have not been able to remove apps. I DID purchase Root Explorer, and it WILL NOT mount RW, because it insists I am NOT rooted. Now it barely loads and FC's immediately.

Is it possible that Metro got wise and blocked rooting? I bought this phone 2-3 months ago.

okay are you sure that you are 2.3.6 and not 2.3.4 then? and Metro doesnt get wise about this. I mean all manufacturers and carriers know that their devices can get rooted but the only way to prevent this to release a update. our phone only has two versions, 2.3.4 and 2.3.6. so no Metro didnt get wise and block it. as a matter of fact i re-rooted just a few days ago after messing with my phone.

go to your settings and scroll down to about phone and look at your android version. there two ways to root. there is this method which works for the 2.3.6 and the other which is among the stickied thread for the 2.3.4

Hi again quandres12...thanks for your patience. And yes, I do have Android version 2.3.6. & kernel version 2.6.35.7. It is the newer SCH-r720 from earlier this year....(NOT the 4g).

I rooted a friend's Admire that had the older Android version using the One-Click method. That was easy -it worked fine- and was able to remove bloatware all within an hour.

My phone is a different story. I have screen shots to show that CWM-based recovery v5.0.2.7 is alive and well on my phone, but do not know how to post them.

I am not a total noob, but this has me stumped.

I will try the whole process over on a different computer using the indulge drivers, rather that the one I had been using successfully from Samsung's website. I just want to eliminate all possible user-error. Although, CWM installed fine via ODIN and then the ZIP file from the SD card as well, so I do not think it is on the PC end. Weirder things have happened tho.

Will update this post later with results of new install from scratch.

[UPDATE] SUCCESS! I started from the beginning on a new PC and voila! I got SuperUser requesting, then granting access...something I did not get before.

Many thanks to qandres12 for all your help and patience.

Man that was a doozy!! I was beginning to think you had an unrootable phone lol well now you can debloat , just be careful with that you delete. Make a backup thru CWM in case you delete something you shouldnt. I myself am trying to see of there is away to update the binary but havent had luck yet.

I'm having trouble with this...So I followed everything from OP got CWM on my phone downloaded attached Admire-2.3.6-Root.zip restarted phone into CWM installed zip from sdcard rebooted and I tried running superuser and it wouldn't show anything to debloat... so I downloaded rootchecker and it says my phone is rooted when I tried updating binary from superuser it would say failed...I tried following older posts but they fix it without posting how...what am I doing wrong?

Superuser isn't an app for debloating. It just gives app root access. For debloating you could try titanium backup (It's the onlys app I use for that purpose). So try a free app that requires root and see if it works.

does not work :/ it says

"Error"
"Sorry, I could not acquire root privilages. This application will *not* work! please verify your ROM is rooted, and try again.

This attempt was made using the "/system/bin/su" command"

I checked with rootchecker again it still passes and says my phone is rooted :/?

Hmmm... Download an android terminal and type #su

just got an admire preloaded with 2.3.6 out of the box. tried to root using the instructions. installs from zip no problems, Superuser.apk also installs. nothing asking for root privileges... Have tried 3 different computers. downloaded root toolkit saying not rooted all the time. downloaded busy box, will not install due to lack of root. any help would be great! Thanks for every ones hard work!

Hello all.
This is my 1st post, but I've been lurking for while. I am not a "smart phone person" but I can and do appreciate all these dev folks contribute to the cause.
I still use a Moto flip on T-mobile prepaid for my connection to the cellular world. Calls only, but I'm good with that. I am just getting my feet wet (sorta) in the realm of smartphones, and I've run into a snag on an Admire.
My motivation is the servalproject. Essentially it's a group from "down under" that is developing an app/system that allows P2P calls, msgs, and file xfers( I presume pics) w/o the carrier infrastructure....using the wifi radios in the phones to create an ad-hoc MESH network.

Cool?...yeah, I thought so too, to the point I started to delve into all this biz about smartphones. I am a HAM and a tinkerer...kind of a natural attraction for me. This could be great for camping, cruises, caravaning with a group, plus what they intend it for, P2P emergency comms, and comms in underdeveloped areas.
So I've picked up some cheap phone from Ebay, a Breakout on Verizon, an Ascend II on Cricket, and a couple of SCH-R720s, both at 2.3.4 on MetroPCS.
The Pantech and the Huawei rooted w/o issue and one of the R720's took two passes of the listed method, but it did root too.

My issue....The other R720 has USB issues. "device not recognized" using XP.
The others worked with this cable.
I changed cables, same result.
I changed physical ports on the comp, same result.
I have tied three different driver packages (including Kies..talk about Bloatware!)
I have not tried a different computer, but I don't expect to see any differences.
I believe the issue to be the phone itself.
I haven't done a factory reset, maybe the FW for the USB is in lala land? I don't have any data on the phone to loose (except the apps I've dl'd). Will factory reset "kill" anything on an unsubb'd phone? Just wanted to ask before I did it.

Looks like I need a no computer MicroSD solution. I see posts here that imply the MicroSD 2.3.6 solution is not usable for 2.3.4 etc. Is that suspected or definitely the case? Just don't want to pass by a possible solution.

Another thought....presuming I can get CWM on the SD, back in the phone,
launch CWM and upgrade to 2.3.6 then
use the 2.3.6 method..............sound possible?

Any help would be appreciated. Again thanks for all that you guy do to make this stuff happen.

The rest is some chatter for anyone interested in this Serval stuff. Others may want to just skip it.
I don't know if the subject is worthy of a thread all to itself at some point.........that's for the mods to decide I guess.
I haven't posted any links. Im not promoting anything, Google is our friend, (unless you want you Android to do adhoc w/o rooting, issue 82) so Google Servalproject for more info. The app is on play, and free....

BTW this is one of the friendliest board I've ever been on...KUDOs to the mgmt, and the members!

I have gotten the three rooted phones to talk/msg thru my router. Actually the un rooted one does too, but doesn't show a Serval adhoc network in the list. I havent gotten them to talk without going thru the router, that is the point, but I'm still playing. I've not contacted the group yet, wanted to collect more run data before I did.
There is also a HAM group playing with MESH using WRT54Gs with modded flash, like open WRT etc. From what I've seen they have the meshing part down pretty good (sq miles of coverage). I dont know if the two projects can be combined. I've got a couple of those Lynksys's around here....ANOTHER thing to look into.......

I dont know if anyone here, devs or anyone that tinkers cares to try to make Android interface with this project, but I would love to see it propagated, or at least played with by "the Gurus that be" here stateside. I can see a bunch of them hang out here. I'm sure the Serval people wouldnt mind a few extra braincells and testers to contribute if possible. I dont know if the app and research is open source or not, that stuff is above my skillset.

Serval devs describe it as a means of temporary P2P emergency comms in a disaster (infrastructure down) and/or comms in an underdeveloped area.
The "missing link" they are working on now is the "replacement device" for the cell tower sites....looks interesting, to me at least.
Something (else) to tinker with......like I need more to do....lol

Any help/input on my USB issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again to all,
mel

It probably would've been better to make a separate thread, but anyways. I'll just answer what I know. CWM doesn't run of the sd card. It's an internal recovery system so I don't think that would be possible and I don't know what you mean by the microsd 2.3.6 solution so I'll leave that alone. Also you should consider trying a different computer. Just might work. If not it could be a problem with the phone's usb port. I don't get what you mean by unsubb'd so I'll say a factory reset only wipes data which means installed apps, the cache, and of course restores all settings to default. Nothing get's killed so to speak.

Hi KageBeast,
Thanks for the reply. The post got longer than I wanted it to, trying to explain as much as possible. The Serval info was to explain my intent with smartphones.
Good to know about the Factory reset. My concern doing that to an unsubscribed (unsub'd) phone was it causing it to need to be subscribed (sub'd) to get the basic features back. I can use it for my purposes without a sub. The apps I've dl'd I can do again, anything else...I just got it off of ebay so no real loss of apps AFAIC.

I havent looked close but over on XDA there are some posts on how to get CWM on the phone without using the USB (put files on the MicroSD then put it in the phone).
Using CWM, I can update to 2.3.6 right? That is where I was going with that train of thought. I could be wrong, I'm trying to absorb all this, I could have some things crossed

Presuming that is correct, then use the "no computer" 2.3.6 method (I called it "the microsd 2.3.6 solution") shown here in this thread to root.

I realize I would have to use the computer to write the files to the micoSD then reinstall it in the phone and go from there.
Kinda round-a-bout but if the USB is dead, seems my only option. That's why I asked if the 2.3.6 method was exclusive to 2.3.6 for sure or maybe it could be used instead of the other root method used for 2.3.4. It would save some steps.

Yes, I will give it a try on another computer (my desktop at work) as well. I wont be back at work until Tuesday though.

I'm going to give the reset a try next, maybe I'll get lucky and it's FW is "confused"...lol

Thanks again for the reply.

Well I hate to do this (resurrect an old thread) but I am a bit of a Droid-head, and I got my hands on a couple of Samsung Admires that I have just issued to my daughter and wife (their first smartphones!). We all know the problem with these phones – extremely small Internal Storage. So rooting for control is a *must*.

My daughter's is at 2.3.4 and rooting was easy.
My wife's, on the other hand, is at 2.3.6, and after studying the procedure/thread to root and spending hours upon hours on it, I am unable to get it to root no matter what I try.

Getting CWM (v5.0.2.7) on it was no problem. It just doesn’t seem to root. I have experience rooting a Droid2 & maintaining a cyanogen Mod 7 install for years, but just can't seem to get this simple procedure done on the Admire.

I have not done a factory reset since my root attempts, nor have I attempted to put 2.3.4 ROM on it. I may be headed for both of these at some point but 2.3.6 seems to be a cleaner GUI and I’d like to keep it.

Thanks in advance for any tips beyond what was already mentioned in this thread!
