Root ROOT Acquired!

So, now that we have root, what apps should I buy/install to take full advantage of this? I had my DX rooted before, but that was just for tethering at school to bypass the devil that is WebSense.

AutoRuns - is a startup manager, shows you all apps and what triggers them to turn on (ie: After Start, Media button press, Connectivity Change, Account Change, etc). Its interesting to see WHY that app you killed keeps turning back on. This is the app I use and makes a big difference.

Titanium Backup - Freeze, remove, clear davlik cache, backup apps, n more.

DroidWall - If your looking to limit your data usage, this is a great app that blocks app specific levels od data (wifi or mobile)

AutoKiller Memory Optimizer - Adjust the internal memory management, NOT a task killer (but it has a manual one built in), set it and forget it basically. Also has some optimization tweaks.

RootExplorer - Every Rooters tool, file manager galore.

SetCPU - Once a kernel that supports it comes out. I've tested in the last 24hrs, and it doesn't actually work (check with another cpu monitor, you'll see)

WirelessTether - Only if you care about using your data plan with your PC, I dont bother, but seems to have worked when I tested it for a minute.

ExtendedControls - Root gives this tool more power, specifically rebooting on click, or reboot to recovery (not useful just yet),

QuickBoot - Quick access to reboot, just this function (3 types or reboot).

ShootMe - Great root app to take screenshots and save to PNG or JPG.

Not sure what the culprit was, but something I froze broke my contacts app. Had to batch defrost everything. I'll do them 1 by 1 later to figure out what it was

Did you reboot after all the freezing? What error, or is it just FCing? Mine is working great so far.... (still waiting for something to fail with all this freezing stuffs).

Awesome that the D3 has finally been rooted. Now I have to see if I want to risk my phone and do it. Maybe I'll wait another week for the dust to settle and make sure it's stable. Good info. in this thread - thanks to all who've contributed so far. :)

Quick "don't remove this" report:

- News

- Weather

- DLNA

- Radio

Got force closes on freezing those four only (so far). Others are obvious to us with root experience, i.e., anything "google," etc.

I'm sure many have noted the "safe to remove" threads beginning at XDA ([post-root] safe to remove - xda-developers).
I removed news without a problem. Removing the task manager built into blur caused repeated force closes. A battery pull solved it though.

I downloaded snapshot er last night...works like a charm unlike no root screenshotit

I like drocap2 because you can map it to long-press search to snap a screenshot

Nope, it doesn't work. Just on my X when I tried turning. It on, it asked me right then to add the thethering charges. But on this it asks when you actually use it.

Thanks

Yep I rebooted.

And yeah it would FC contacts, but only if I tried to open a contact card.
But if I just went to contacts, I could look through all my contacts fine. As soon as I clicked on one, contacts would FC.

edit-
Yahoo Contacts and Yahoo Mail Authenticator seem to be the culprits for my problem.

Ok - I just rooted my droid 3 - no go on the wifi tethering. Droid Pro had no isse with the latest updates and all just this past week, but this one is a no go on the D3...

I am kinda heart broken atm, but I guess I'll just have to live with Tablet tethering when I am out with the wife with her droid pro. Or pay the $20...

Yeah, I stayed up late to work on rooting my D3--a hassle, since the v.7 script/exe didn't work on my XP PC. But I gladly (and VERY CAREFULLY) hand-typed the adb commands to root and push su etc to my phone. Root acquired, and then... EVERY time I tried to access the internet--EVEN FROM THE PHONE'S BROWSER--I got redirected to Verizon's dunsp.vzw.com site, asking me to sign up for tethering. Sigh. I couldn't access the internet nor even many of the forum apps until I had UNrooted. I feel like I must have missed a step that would have kept my root under the VZW radar. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

My main reason for wanting root is to slim down the memory gobbled up by bloatware. (Why would I want Skype or Slacker running when I'm not even using them?!?!) The wireless tethering is just a little icing on the cake when I am at work and need to demo how to connect a wifi-only device to the internet. HOWEVER, once I got root last night, VZW block ALL my access to the internet--even from the D3 itself! Oh well, back to stock for now.

ROOT!! Its so nice...

I highly recommend AutoRuns, blocks all the unwanted apps from turning on (even the ones you want that just turn on all by themselves).

now the crashing, flashing, corrupting, and switching crap and staying up until all hours of the day playing with the phone begin.

Besides after a sack of White Castle sliders, where do you get Autoruns? ;)

I could not find the app on the market, titled "Autoruns".

Thanks

Update: Could not find by Google either.

I installed that one, but figured since Izel's syntax was exact each time he mentioned the app, I figured there was one called "AutoRuns".

BTW, I wonder if the polling of the auto run app is any better than the net result of the apps loading in the app stack in the first place?

Ironically, the Phandroid app is a culprit and even auto run can not keep it at bay. Gun Brothers is another problem app for opening (it usually uses two app spots).

Update:

The autorun app appears to do nothing as far as apps that want to restart. Gun Brothers and Phandroid appear to both be aggressive and mildly evil apps in this regard. As far as Phandroid, I have PM notification and syncing turned off. Still wants to open and STAY open.

Also still looking for the guidelines on what to even do with a rooted phone.

Right now there is no recovery, roms or kernals(no overclocking)to flash. Just download Titanium Backup/Titanium Backup Pro, Root Explorer and Setcpu from the market. TB will allow you to backup apps and system data. It will also let you uninstall/freeze apps and bloatware. Root Explorer will give you access to system files and sdcard. Setcpu will allow you to underclock and set battery saving profiles.

I hope that helps.

Well, I'm pretty new to hacking anything Droid, but following that write up on XDA was VERY easy. I took a risk and put my gonads on the chopping block, but after reading through his instructions once, I was fairly confident. It took about 5-10 mins since I was going slowly and making sure everything was exactly as instructed. I'm posting this through my tethered wifi and it's going great. IMO, I doubt they'll catch on since it hacks it to look as if it's your phone using data and with an unlimited plan, you could really run up the data streaming Netflix to a TV with the HDMI out port, way more than web browsing.

If you're going to put every single root-related thing in one thread, why even have a root section?

It needs to be split up into
ROOT Acquired (So people can find it)
Tethering Discussion
Battery Life Tweaks

Jesus Christ who keeps merging all these damn threads?

If you're going to put every single root-related thing in one thread, why even have a root section?

Useless.

It needs to be split up into
ROOT Acquired (So people can find it)
Tethering Discussion
Battery Life Tweaks

But no, some idiot wants it all jumbled together, so the post with Root info is halfway through the thread.
Great job.
I agree, I don't enjoy having to dissect this thread now to find specific topic discussions such as mine....

I removed the angry, foot stamping childishness from that post. Let's see no more of it, please. ;)

If we want less thread merging, that is all that needs to be said, "hey Mods, could we have less thread merging please?" .. etc. The other, emotional stuff just gets people unsettled about the issue and more junky posts ensue.

I've been merging threads into here that ask about tethering and battery life. It's grown too much and now we have an unproductive mish-mash in one thread, so no more merging of those subjects does make sense. ;)

I honestly thought the tethering queries would taper off, and that the battery ones would end quickly, but I was mistaken. Sorry about that.

Questions, requests or complaints, please feel free to PM me. :)

Define bloatware please. Also, i downloaded titanium backup but upon startup it says error, can not find root superuser permission or no busybox. Im rooted and have su so im assuming its busybox. I looked in there titanium wiki about busy box and wtf?! You have to download android sdk then download android ndk and write some scripts for building the busybox?! That's beyond me, is that how you really have to do it?

By bloat I mean V cast apps(tones, music, videos and navigator) as well as any pre-installed games and apps other than the google apps. Until we have a recovery tool to make a backup of your phone, using TB to freeze these apps is safer than removing them. It will help improve battery life and make your phone a little snappier.

It seems to me that your phone is not rooted. What method did you use to root your phone, the hard way or the one click method? The one click method will do all this for you and you would then find the Superuser icon in your app draw.

I used one click as mentioned at the start of this thread and I have SU in my tray.
