Root Root Desire on 3-UK

Hi all,

I got a new Desire at Christmas, locked to 3 so I could use it PAYG. Although I've only just got it I noticed that Android 2.3 had been released and seen videos of custom roms working on the Desire. What I would like to know, as I would like to give rooting a go, is if it is worth updating to 2.3 from 2.2 on my handset?

Also, i would like to know that, if I do root, will i be able to use 'Skype for 3' on it as normal, because this is why I moved to 3 and I wouldn't like to give up this feature in place of rooting.

Thank's very much and apologies if it is in the wrong section.

(p.s. Fantastic community going on here!)

I've just moved to it and 2.3 seems good - bit early to tell as yet though

And no, Skype for 3 won't work but you can get the normal Skype app now on the Market and I assume it'll work - never tried it personally

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately the Skype on the Market isn't the same, they won't allow you to connect through it. The 3 version handles skype differently.

If i rooted it on 2.2 would it still work the same except for extra functionality? [sorry for the noobish question]

If you just root and keep the current Rom, it should work exactly as it does now. But what do you want to achieve by rooting if keeping the same Rom?

I'd be able to access more areas of the device, right? Plus the ability to use some more apps that require rooting, eg. CPU adjusters to save battery when not using intensive stuff like gaming. Lol Skype means a lot to me, a few of my close mates have had to move country so being able to chat to them during frees at college is a luxury I'd prefer not to lose. I'm a tinkerer at heart and love to mess about with stuff, believe me. If only I was able to buy 2...

Please correct me if i'm wrong at all :D

Try that app first. Achieves root access without rooting

Yes it dose, I have the H3G Skype apk file if you get stuck, not sure why it wouldn't work on other Roms.

It use to tell me that it wasn't compatible with my hand set when I went to the Three site to download it because I have a unbranded generic hand set. I just installed it manually by the acquired apk file and it worked fine.

Really?? You can definitely confirm that you can get Three's Skype working on your handset?

I'd appreciate it a lot if you could send the apk to me, in case it doesn't allow me to download off their site.

Thanks for your most helpful post!

Have a look at this thread the file is there and I've just tried it again now after my re-format yesterday and it installed and logged in no problem.

Ok, so last night I decided to root the phone on the firmware already on my phone using unrevoked. All is working well, it gave me root access and I was able to install setcpu which is working fine.

I decided that, after reading a bit more, I would perform a nandroid backup so I could save the firmware as a backup in case I ever decide to try a custom rom. I understand to do this I need to boot into recovery, and that unrevoked (latest) installs clockwork as a recovery. I downloaded quickboot to boot into recovery and whenever I do, it reboots and then the screen is black as if it is off. Nothing else.

Can anyone advise?

Thank you.

can you boot to recovery by holdong voldown+power
select recovery and press power it should boot to clockwork mod
if this works its just a wierd problem with quickboot, if it doesnt work then unrevoked hasnt flashed the recovery properly and you may need to re-run it

while you are at hboot (1st part of recovery process) can you type what it says on the 1st 5 lines please

regards

Hi, thanks for your reply. I managed to finally get it to be stable, after about 20 odd times tapping latest clockwork in rom manager.

I've been reading and found out about AmonRA, and there is a version for Desires. Is there a way of putting this on my Desire in place of clockwork?

Thank you

I use AmonRA but have only ever done it during first root (selecting it in unrEVOked before connecting my phone). Never tried to update over the top of CWM. If you're S-OFF it's easy, though

I haven't got my desire on s-off, would it be worth doing this to flash the recovery, as I read s-off is not really necessary unless for development. otherwise is there another means of swapping clockwork mod?

I've now noticed something else. When I press the power button to make it idle/standby the screen goes blank as normal. Then after, when I press it to activate, nothing happens, i thought it was off, but it doesn't respond, and i have to take the battery out and back in to be able to turn it back on, and then its the same again, as soon as it goes to standby, i have to repeat the process again.

This is really worrying me now, please can someone advise?

Much appreciated
