Hi all, first post. I want to root my 2.1 OTA Eris. The subject is a little foggy to me on this forum. I'm a novice to rooting admittedly. It seems that rooting an Eris thats running 2.1 OTA is possible if your HBOOT is 1.47 or lower and should root the same as 1.5.
You can do it this way if you wish, but that is no longer necessary. The Eris can be rooted while running 1.5 or 2.1, all from the device itself, even if HBOOT is 1.49.0000.
I was wondering if anyone has used Universal AndRoot? It looks TOO easy and that worries me. Any ideas on how to successfully accomplish this root would be greatly appreciated. Also...some OS recommendations for Eris would help too. Thanks in advance for the help!
I
STRONGLY prefer the Universal Root for Dummies, in this thread:
http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html
It is extremely well documented and illustrated, and written with a novice rooter in mind, in my opinion
There is also an app in the market that will root with 1-click and give you the same result. (It's
here.) I still suggest the Dummies method, though.
While this may seem as if you are doing a lot, both of those methods will install a replacement custom Recovery image - the phone's software that you will actually use to install a custom ROM, backup and restore the state of your phone, etc. - that requires a working trackball. One of the major problems that plagues the Eris is a trackball that stops working properly, so I also recommend that you use the the steps in
this thread to install a version of Amon_RA Recovery that does not require the trackball. It may save some headaches later on, and it uses the same Gscript Lite app that you will use in the Universal Root for Dummies thread. So, after you root, and even after installing your first ROM, run through Scenario 3 in that thread.
And, if I can be so bold, I also recommend that, rather than sticking with stock, that you consider installing the custom ROM
xtrSENSE 5.0.1. The fourth post in the Universal Root for Dummies thread will walk you through the procedure to install your first custom ROM, if you wish, and I suggest that it be xtrSENSE, which will fix a lot of the problems with stock Eris software while retaining the exact functionality that you are accustomed to with stock. I have been rooted for almost exactly a year now, have tried many, many custom ROMs, including ones running Froyo and Gingerbread, but I am now back to running xtrSENSE for good. The darned thing just works.
If you follow the steps to do a Nandroid backup in the Universal Root thread, you can always go back to what you have now. Also, skip the step to "Wipe data/factory reset" if you install xtrSENSE - it should install right over stock, keeping your apps and settings, while giving you a lot more space for apps and data, and an overclocked CPU while the phone is busy (to give much better performance) and underclocked when you are not using the phone (to save battery life.)
