Root Root has landed

Was there a few click fool proof method of rooting? The process seems way too complicating to me

There is not a 1 click method yet but there probably will be in the next few days.

This method really looks more intimidating that it really is. There is not much to mess up if you simply copy and paste the commands.

Somebody needs to make a vid and post it to youtube on how to do this. I'm sure your not supposed to copy and paste "cd c:/wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is." Maybe I'm wrong but that just doesnt sound right. I'm having problems installing the abd. Says it failed to find the URL or whatever and to do something manually.

Total rooting n00b here! I just successfully rooted my Droid 2! I got Barnacle Wi-Fi hotspot working and just got SetCPU but am gonna wait until tommorrow after work to mess around with that! If anyone needs help or questions just let me know!

It was relatively easy, just make sure before you start you add the 'adb' command into your environment variables I believe it was. They tell you how to do it about 4-6 pages into the xda thread. I was stumped wondering why it wouldn't recognize the command lol. I hope that they'll be able to get custom ROMs working in the future if it's even possible on the Droid X/Droid 2!

the reason the command is that is because the guy who wrote the guide doesnt know where you installed adb. So for most the command would actually look more like this

"cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools"

Although like I said its entirely dependent on where you chose to install adb

Im aware of that. But for someone to say just copy and paste the commands, people who don't know are going to do just that. Im just gonna wait for the one-click cause I can't get the damn adb command prompt to install.

Interesting...I thought wifi tether required a custom kernel...didn't know you could do it w/just root.

I just followed the walk through on the XDA site and rooted my Droid 2! The hard part is setting up ADB...

Now I'm off to look into cool stuff I can do now that I'm rooted

after rooting and renaming maybe 5 apk's this thing boots in about 1/4 time of my neighbors d2. loving it

To get the abd command working you need to right click on My Computer then go to (System) Properties. After that you need to go to Advanced Settings and then click Environment Variables. When you're in there you need to double click Path in the bottom selection box and add a semicolon to the end of the path then paste the location of tools folder I believe it was. DO NOT change anything else in that string or else it could cause your computer and OS to work improperly. This is all off memory because I'm at work but I will try to clarify with pictures at home tonight.

About 30-40 minutes including setting abd up.

Nope! Working perfect! :D I've gotten 3 separate laptops and 2 iPhones to tether so far in the past 2 days. It's a wonderful feeling seeing iPhones have to leech off of an Android device for wifi! hehehe

How risky is rooting a phone? I really don't want to mess up and never be able to use it again like bricking it or something.

Hah...that's great to know...thanks.

I may have a choice between a new D2 and a refurb D1 coming up, and would like to go for the D2 (more memory, no need to OC to run at higher clock speed). The main things i'm concerned about are wifi tethering (now a non-issue, thanks to your info), and lack of CW Recovery or CyanogenMod ROM.

Koush said recently on IRC that he would spend some time working on a recovery for D2, and he also indicated that he might be able to make a CM ROM for the DX/D2 (they are evidently close enough HW-wise that he seemed to think he could make one ROM to run on both), so I'm leaning towards the D2. But I would be very, very sad if it ended up that the D2 didn't get CM. :(

The risk is very low if you read first, ask questions to clarify anything that you aren't sure about, and can follow instructions.

The gain on the D2 at this point is relatively limited...until custom ROMs are available, mostly you can remove a few apps (e.g., "bloatware") you might want to remove and use wifi tether. May be able to change the color of the notification bar...

When a custom recovery and ROMs are available, then things get much more interesting, IMHO.

Have you tried SetCPU?

People use SetCPU to underclock their Droid 2 when not in use but I haven't seen anyone overclock it. I've heard people say we need a custom kernel or something of the sort.

My step-dad just had a D1 replacement ordered last week. Guess what came... a D2 with a letter stating...

"Due to a shortage in supply of the Droid 1 replacement devices, we have upgraded you to a brand new Droid 2 A955 device. Please accept our apologies..."

I was extremely disappointed to see this... thinking he would be completely locked out from rooting (I had his D1 rooted with a custom ROM), but it sounds like this might work out after all. I might have to try rooting his D2 this afternoon.

That's what I was thinking, underclocking the CPU, specially at night, would allow for super battery life if I were to forget to charge it.

Droid 2 is a great device, don't be disappointed. Oh, and I live about 10 minutes from you.
