I am looking at rooting my evo but cant seem to find much on the new its update 2.3.5. Also, I have hboot 2.18, not sure if anyone is able to help me. This is my first time trying anything like this, so i need all the help possible.

it might be your browser. check your settings and maybe try a different browser like firefox or chrom. i can access the link with no issues.

Something must be up with the file, because I am missing the fastboot file in the tools folder.

***UPDATE***After some searching, I found the file in another folder.

OK, I have it unlocked now! I tried to download those files from Captain's Guide to achieve S-OFF, but they have problems with them.

OK, I have it flashed now. But the Superuser keeps aborting installation. I kept getting Please insert the last disk of the Multi-Volume set and click OK to continue when I would put it on the sd card. Anyone able to throw some insight on this for me?

Where are you getting this error? In recovery? I've never heard of that error before.

If all you want to do is root your EVO, once you've unlocked and installed the custom recovery, all you have to do is install Superuser and you're done. The additional steps are for unlocking NAND, which isn't required to root or use custom ROMs.

I get that Multi volume set error when I try to load the superuser zip file onto the sd card. if i hit cancel it still shows up on the card, but recovery aborts when trying to flash it.

What browser are you using to download it? Do you have the device attached to the computer in USB Mass Storage/Disk Drive mode, or do you have the card attached by other means? You should be able to download the file directly from here:

Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
md5: fc462fa0630379edbe10006b1d19d9b1

See if that makes any difference for you (and verify you have a good download by checking the md5).

NOTE: This file should be flashed as-is, not unzipped.

Internet Explorer, and Yes it is hooked up as a Mass Storage/USB drive.
Have you tried a different browser, like Chrome or Firefox? Did you try downloading from the direct link I posted and see if that helps?

It seems like Windows may be trying to install something additional when you're trying to move the file. using a different browser may alleviate that issue.

I saw you say you unzip the file. Leave the file zipped up. Don't extract it.

Try the unzipped file and see if it works.

hey granite,
he mentioned that for unzipping the flash_image.zip file. it needs to be unzipped and then have fastboot flash it. you will need to flash the su unzipped in recovery.

OK, I am finally get back to this tonight. I am skipping the S-OFF since I really don't need it. Just going to do the Superuser in Recovery and see how that works.

This file worked perfect for me. The one thing I did different this time was used my media card drive to transfer the file over to the card. Instead of it already being in the card, and mounting it through the USB.

Yes!!! I now have a rooted phone. What is a good app for the WiFi tether? Plus, I would like to find an awesome ROM. I saw one that seemed like it helped with battery life as well.
