Root Root Issue - Help Please

So I rooted with HTCDev because I don't have a Win7 machine to get S-OFF. I got my phone unlocked and everything looked good.

I put the MeanRom zip file on my SD Card. Powered down and rebooted into the bootloader screen. I'm trying to create my recovery and then flash the MeanRom.

Here is what it says:

Update Fail!

Any advice?

you can't use the PJ75IMG file, not with s-on anyways. you need to fastboot command it in.

Thanks. I did that step. How do I verify that my recovery is there? Sorry I'm confused because seems a lot different than rooting my OG EVO.
 
That's the problem. That screen I detailed in my original post is as far as I can get. I can't get into recovery. The only option I have is to reboot. Is there any other info I can provide?

I tried the GooManager but the Reboot Recovery isn't working for me so I'd have to manually do it, which I'm not able to.
 
oh yes i see, you need to delete the PJ75IMG file off of your card.

and that is the only option? do you see a bootloader option? select that if so and then select recovery.

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!

the phone is programmed to look for a file named PJ75IMG. this file name can be used for all sorts of things. like flashing radios, ruu's(rom update utility), and recoveries. just so you know what the file is. however, with s-on unlocked you can use them unless the are signed by htc which most of these files are not.
 
Thanks for the explanation! I have a somewhat unrelated question. I have S-ON but unlocked. I downloaded titanium backup pro but says it can't gain or verify root access. What's up with that? I thought being unlocked with S-ON put my phone in "rooted" status.

Do u have superuser or super Su?

no like one dude mentions, you need to flash the su file. the super user app needs to be also installed from the market as well. the su (super user) is the one that grants permission to gain root access without it tb and other root apps will not work.

now i do recommend that you just flash a rom. all custom roms have su cooked in. but that is up to you. you can get most roms here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/614073-list-utilities-roms-kernels.html. try the staff suggestions.
 
Cool thanks. I'm downloading MeanBean now. So I can just flash that and SU access will be granted?

Is there anyway to get S-OFF without Win7 or Linux, since I have HBOOT 2.09?

no need to flash su if you plan on flashing meanbean. it has it cooked in. but if you do not flash mean bean then yes the su will grant you access to the system partition after you flash it.

right now it does not matter what hboot you have. the only way to get s-off is thru dirty racun. and yes at the moment that is the only way. if you have windows 8 or another windows op then you will have to use a live cd to run dirty racun. on a mac you can only get unlocked.
 
I got it figured out. Thanks for the help! MeanBean ROM is installed. It looks very similar to JB, but adds some nice features. So far so good!

In regards to updating the radio, I know it's a pain with S-ON. My radio is current now. How often do you think I'll need to go through the process to get that updated?

well radios only get updated when there is an OTA out. no ota=no new radios.

so you should be fine for a bit. it is not always necessary to update them anyways.
