Root or not

I have a D1, and am tired of getting the low memory notification. Then, I have to go and delete some apps that i kinda like, but don't use daily. I have moved everything I can to my sd card (32 gb). I am terrified at the thought of rooting. Are there others out there who were very apprehensive, but are glad they did? I need talked down from the ledge!:eek:
 
I studied rooting so i understood it the best i could without doing it for about a month... i was VERY aprehensive but am SO SO SO glad i rooted you have NO idea what your phone is capable of and how smooth it really can be until you root believe me once you do it you will be happy but take your time do it right dont shortcut it or you will be lost!
 
If your heart's not racing when you root, check your pulse: you may be dead.

My heart was beating a mile a minute when I first rooted my Droid, but it was over before I knew it... had a custom recovery flashed, made a backup and a ROM installed.

Keep in mind that Verizon wants the Droid to die a quick death into obscurity, while the developers want to keep it fresh, dynamic and new. Everytime a new ROM comes out, it's like a new phone all over again - with capabilities that Verizon never intended! (Example: Verizon maintains that the Droid is physically and electronically incapable of being a wifi hotspot... something I've been doing since MARCH.)

There are plenty of experienced people here who have rooted their phones in every way possible to guide you along. If you get stuck (you probably won't), the forum is here to help.

I cannot recommend rooting and ROMming enough! :D
 
I was noid about doing it.. put it off for months.. SO kicked myself for delaying waiting now that I have the power I have with rooting. I knew that in the first hour of rooting.

root, it gives you a whole new phone
 
I agree with The_Cheif about the heart racing. I rooted my phone months ago and have flashed a new/different ROM who knows how many times. But last night my wife finally decided that she wanted her phone to work as well as mine and wanted it rooted. Big ol' sweat bullets popped out on my forehead as I said "well sure honey" while I was really thinking "If this screws up I'm in SO much trouble...". It was smooth like silk, now she's loving her newly rooted phone.
 
I second the other responses. I was apprehensive and held off from rooting for months - my phone was working fine despite the occasional lag here and there and I didn't think it would make much of a difference. Once you go through the process it isn't as daunting as you would expect, and the benefits make themselves apparent pretty quickly.

In your case once you root you could use CacheMate to clear your phone's caches on a routine basis to keep those low memory notifications at bay.

Correct, it doesn't work with the latest stock update of 2.2 (FRG22D). The security loophole from that easy root exploited has been closed with the latest update.

I originally rooted using Easy Root, and lost root when I updated to FRG22D. I then used the method I linked to above, and it worked brilliantly.

Good luck, and if you run into any problems, the people here will help you. Take some solace in the knowledge that the Droid has been shown to be virtually unbrickable.
 
I too have been looking at rooting. In fact the only thing holding me back is fear that touchdown will no longer work and I'll lose my company email. If someone can convince me that touchdown and my other paid-for apps will still work (documents to go, a few others), I just may have to give it a go.

I have yet to find an app that works with stock Froyo but doesn't work with custom ROM Froyo. Once you've ROMmed and log back into Google, it starts repopulating all your apps. Even if an app doesn't install again, Google keeps a record of your purchased apps and, at worst, you'll have to go into the Market and install it by hand. Every app I have installed work just like they did before.
 
its a shame the freg22d doesn't "support" easy root. i must have gotten lucky b/c when we first got the first 2.2 OTA, i forced it on my phone, this gave me some confidence to tinker with it a bit more, looked up easy root, and it was done. i was still freaking out that it would brick my phone, but it didn't. i have only had my phone for about 1.5 months and i am a ROM freak. i have tried all the big names out there. flashed different kernels, themed, ect. i am SO glad i did it. i still dont know if i would rooted if i wasn't able to use easy root.

but easy root + ROM manager= awesome. these two tools made is so easy to do, it feels natural to flash new ROMs, i dont even freak out any more...lol

I wouldn't recommend Easy Root

do it yourself

its not a hard process

Im so glad I did. as people have said rooting turns the D1 into a total new phone

Anyone care to chime in as to the pros/cons for either method?

I've already downloaded all the needed files, installed the SDK and USB drivers so I'm ready to go.
Well.....except for the fact that I left my USB cable at home...

Just to let this thread know... I'm in the same boat. I'm on the fence. Slightly worried, still not 100% sure what to do AFTER I get rooted, but I'm trying to find a decent rom to throw on it. I would really just like to be able to customize my phone more... maybe speed it up a bit!

They speak the truth. There is a huge difference between an adhoc connection and a wifi hotspot.

;)
 
Ok....I think I will take the plunge tomorrow morning. I am too tired tonight and am afraid I may rush it. Thanks to all for thier input. If I brick it I'll be on bright and early;)
 
Ok, now I kinda wanna root, but I don't want to void my warranty, because I really don't have enough money for a new phone if mine ever takes a crap. Sooo how likely is it they'll know and void my warranty?

For the most part, people have brought their droids straight up to vzw reps and they could see clearly it was rooted. some even told that their droid was rooted. they dont care basically. lol i heard a rep helped someone root their droid so...?
Also, you could just unroot before you talk to them or send it back or whatever the case may be if you are worried about getting a strict rep.
